New Comic Day! December 8th Edition.

Hey guys, it's your very busy(and oh so tired...)amigo X, ready to bring the awesome with another installment of New Comic Day!!! This past week has been a busy one for me, but the finish line is in sight, and I'm racing towards next Monday, which spells the end of this semester of school. Besides that, these past three days have brought us our first measurable snow of the season, which naturally annoyed the hell out of me... Damn lake effect snow... I mean really, why couldn't the snow hold off ONE more week? Once I'm out of school, I could care less HOW much it snows. Oh well, what can you do.

Okay, enough complaints, this post isn't about the sucky weather we denizens of Upstate New York have to deal with, it's actually about comics, so let's get to that. As always, before we take a look at the comics I picked up earlier today, let's first take a look back at my predictions from last week's NCD post. Last week I picked up 13 comics, and promised 7 reviews by the time I posted this week's NCD post. How did I do? I managed to put up 9 reviews, topping my promise, so I'm happy about that. I'd have liked to have gotten 13 reviews up(for the 13 comics I picked up), but schoolwork has to take precedence at this time of year, so all things considered I'm happy with the 9 reviews.

So that was last week, now the question is, what did I pick up this week? Well, I picked up What If? Wolverine: Father #1, Superboy #2, Shadowland: After The Fall #1, Justice League: Generation Lost #15, I Am An Avenger #4, Detective Comics Annual #12, Booster Gold #39, Batgirl #16, Captain America: The Korvac Saga #1 & Widowmaker #1. That's 10 comics, but I've got to say, I am looking forward to most of those books for a change. If I had to pick out just one though, I'd have to say that What If? Wolverine Father #1 would be this week's pick of the litter... But man, that wasn't an easy decision... Batgirl or Widowmaker could have EASILY taken that top spot. This week's runt of the litter? I'll have to go with Booster Gold #39. Yup, since Dan Jurgens has left this series, things have gone drastically downhill for the Greatest Hero You've Never Heard Of... Here's hoping we get a writing change on Booster sooner, rather than later. Now for my obligatory weekly promise... Let's see, since I picked up 10 books, I'm going to promise 5 reviews. But that could very easily change depending on when I finally finish up my research paper, since it's the only thing that I really have left to finish off this semester. If I get on the ball and knock that sucker out, expect more reviews. If I'm feeling especially lazy, well then 5 new reviews seems just about right. As always, if you want me to specifically review something drop me a comment. If not, well drop me a comment anyway, I don't mind! That'll do it for now, until next time, X out.

  1. Another comic week has slipped on by us so quickly. I'm looking forward to your Batgirl and Generation Lost even though I'm behind on those. Lol.

I'm curious, the heck is Widowmaker #1 about?

  2. Hang in there, X and Falisha, we've only got a little time left to go and then we're free!! :D Well, until next semester anyway, lol. I don't have any requests this week other than Cap & the Korvac Saga. I have the trade for Iron Man & the Armor Wars, but I haven't read it yet, so I'm interested to see how this new series goes.

  3. Well, Batgirl is definitely doable, but I am SOOOOO far behind with Gen Lost(like 7 issues worth!)I can't see myself doing that review anytime soon, Lisha.

As for Widowmaker, it's a crossover mini-series between Black Widow and Hawkeye & Mockingbird. So yeah, being one of the world's biggest fans of Hawkeye and Mock, as well as being really into BW, this was a must buy for me.

I finished off most of my papers Marc, so I am feeling REALLY good right now! I'll make sure to put that Cap mini towards the top of the ol' pile. I have a few issues of IM's Armor Wars(if that is the trade from the 80's event), but I never really followed through to read the rest of that story. In other words, I'll be looking forward to your review for that! :P

  4. Actually, the Iron Man series is a modern reinterpretation of the classic '80s story. It's semi-in-continuity from my understanding, sort of like the new Captain America series seems to be. They did a similar series called Spider-Man & the Secret Wars, which I guess was an "untold" story that took place during the 1984 Secret Wars miniseries.

There are a few trades covering the original Armor Wars story...I think they're called Armor Wars Prelude, Armor Wars, and Armor Wars II. I haven't read any of them either, but I'd really like to see what they're all about!

  5. Ah, gotcha. Although I am a bit puzzled by the phrase, "semi-in-continuity"... That's like calling somebody semi-dead. I mean it's either in continuity or not. Does that mean some writers consider it canon while others don't, because that would be a whole new level of weird for Marvel...

  6. I think that's just my way of saying nobody knows whether it's in continuity or not, lol. Like Marvel claimed the Spider-Man one was in continuity, but apparently it had some pretty big contradictions to the original story (not that I care, because I HATE Secret Wars!). No idea if the same is true for the Iron Man or the Captain America series, though.

  7. Oh, okay. I though Marvel had said that "semi-in-continuity" line. That would have really left me baffled. Hmm, I'm kind of tempted to see if I can snag that Spidey one to compare it to the original story, especially if it's now considered canon.

  8. I hope for your sake that wouldn't entail re-reading the original Secret Wars miniseries!! Because if so, I feel for you, I really do.

  9. HA! Okay, I've GOT to ask, what's with your out and out hatred of the Secret Wars, Marc? I don't recall hating it(I barely recall it at all actually...), I DO recall hating the follow-up though... Man do I HATE SW II! Feel free to rant away!

  10. Basically, I think Secret Wars is a racist, sexist, poorly written piece of commercialist trash, with an uneventful plot that could have been topped by any first-grader with a half-functioning imagination and a set of crayons.

I have two single-spaced pages I've written about the series saved on my computer, which I may unleash on the world one day as a review on my blog...but honestly, I haven't even said everything I could say about it in those two pages, and it's already WAY longer than anyone would ever want to read! Maybe someday, though...

  11. Oh, and I've never read Secret Wars II. Given how much I despise the first one, I'm not sure the sequel could be any worse. I don't really want to find out though, since if it's anything like the first series it'll make me violently angry...and I really don't like to read things that make me feel that way (strangely enough)!

  12. Man, you have GOT to post that one day, Marc! Like I said before, I don't really recall much about Secret Wars, about all I do remember is Spidey getting the Venom suit and Dr. Doom stealing the Beyonder's powers. After your rant on it, I'm half tempted to pick it up and give it a read again!

Secret Wars dealt with the Beyonder(complete with polyester suit and jheri curls)roaming around Earth not really doing anything of interest... Ugh.

  13. Yeah, I've seen the part of the comic where Spider-Man explains to the Beyonder how to go to the bathroom...and that was about ALL I needed to see! What a joke...

And noooo, don't read Secret Wars! Save yourself, X...save yourself!!

  14. HA!!! That pretty much sums up Secret Wars II in a nutshell! What an aweful mini-series...

Okay, you've convinced me, Marc. I will NOT dig that mini back out anytime soon. But I've got to say, I'm still hoping you decide to unleash your epic Secret Wars rant upon the unsuspecting world! :P
