New Comic Day! December 15th Edition.

Howdy kids, it's Wednesday, which means it's once again time for me to dish on which comics I picked up at ye old comic shop today. But, as always, we must first look back before we move forward... I snagged 10 comics from the cb shop last week, and promised only 5 reviews, figuring the last week of school would take away from my comic reviewing time... How wrong I was! I was able to finish up most of my papers early in the week, which left me plenty of time to review some comics. And when I say plenty, I mean PLENTY! All in all, I managed to review a staggering 19 comics this past week, more then blowing away my predicted 5! 19 books, and not one perfect score... Oh well, there's always this week I guess. Oh, and to continue the weirdness that was last week, the comic I chose as last week's runt of the litter(Booster Gold #39)turned out to be one of my favorite comics from last week! Weird, weird stuff...

So there we go, that wraps up last week, let's get into what I picked up this week. I managed a mediocre 10 comics today, which means I guarantee 10 reviews before next week's NCD post. What comics did I get you ask? Well allow me to enlighten you! I got, What If? Amazing Spider-Man: Grim Hunt #1, Uncanny X-Force #3, Thunderbolts #151, Supergirl #59, Loki #2, Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #5, Captain America: Man Out of Time #2, Brightest Day #16, Batman: Orphans #2, and Avengers Academy #7. After some thought I'm going to say that this week's pick of the litter is Uncanny X-Force #3. That series has been strong from the start, and the eventual confrontation between X-Force and Kid Apocalypse should be awesome. As for this week's runt of the litter, need you even ask?! It's EASILY that horrid Brightest Day! Brightest Day has managed to suck in ways I didn't even know a comic COULD suck, so I am fully expecting the sucktitude to sink to even lower levels this issue.

Before I go, I couldn't help but notice that this is the 499th post of 2010 for me... I had planed to post some pictures that I know the people who come to this blog enjoy during Christmas week, but those scans aren't quite ready yet... So instead I'll post SOME sort of scan(s) for the epic 500th post of the year before I go back to reviews for posts #501 upward. Well, that's it for me, I've got to try to find some scans for post 500... Until next time, X out.

  1. Haha, I can't WAIT to hear what new depths Brightest Day has sunk to this week! I'll be really sad when that series is over, because that'll mean an end to your and JT's hilarious reviews of it. And speaking of Brightest Day, guess what new hardcover I just found out the library purchased a copy of...that's right, Brightest Day Vol. 1! I promptly placed a hold on it, so hopefully I'll be able to read it soon without having to give DC my money for it.

Also, just one more paper left for me before this semester is officially over!! I'll be doing lots of comic-reading, including most likely getting caught up on issues 2 and 3 of Uncanny X-Force. I can't wait!

  2. The ONLY thing I'm looking forward to this week, is Brightest Day. Lol. You're not reviewing anything I'm reading this week but doesn't mean I won't be around to stick my nose in and say my two cents :)

But, Oh how I can't wait until the BD Rant. Lol. I can hear it now.

And Marc, lol, you should've warned your library of the terrible garbage they just purchased!!! lol. I can't wait to hear what you have to say either when you do get a chance to read it. Lol.

    Let the fun begin!

  3. I have to say, the fact that you guys seem to legitimately enjoy those venomous Brightest Day reviews I've been posting really warms my heart. At least I know the mental anguish I undergo as I read them is well worth it!

I've got to agree with Lisha here, Marc... You're asking for trouble if you read that Brightest Day hardcover! Don't say I didn't warn you, my friend! :P

  4. If I'd had a choice in the matter, I definitely would have told the library to get something else. But since that's what they did get, I figure I'll make the most of what I can get for free! Hopefully it will be the hilarious kind of terrible, rather than the rage-inducing kind...

  5. Yeah, I guess considering it's a free read, there's not really much you can say. As for me, I usually swing between the hilarious type of terrible, to the enraged type of terrible. Let's hope for your sake you see it as the hilarious terrible!

  6. Hey X & Co.,

I wasn't sure where I should put this, but I figured New Comic day was a neutral spot. I missed an opportunity of a lifetime Wednesday night because I had a stupid final and my boss was trying to surprise me. This was two days ago and I am still pissed at myself for missing this. What is it that I missed that I am talking about?

"TASCHEN invites you to join author Paul Levitz and other featured DC artists and collaborators for the Los Angeles launch of 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking

    Wednesday, December 15th 7:00–9:00 PM

    TASCHEN Store Beverly Hills
    354 N. Beverly Dr.
    Ph: 310.274.4300
    RSVP to store-beverly@taschen.com "

My boss had RSVP'd for myself and my best friend to attend and have purchased a book for me to get signed. I've been told that I will still get a signed book, but I missed a great opportunity. BAHHUMBUG!

    Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

  7. My thought, comment and suggestion are all the same here... ARRGH!!! With a capital ARR, capital GH! I mean the signed book is ULTRA cool, but actually being there would have been... Well, a step up from ULTRA cool I guess! Man, that is a tough one.

I gotta ask though, even if you would have known before hand, would you/could you have skipped the final? I mean missing a final would be REALLY hard to rationalize(for me at least!), because they're usually, you know, final! :D I think the way I'd look at it is to say that even had I known, I wouldn't have been able to make it, and as such, I wouldn't be TOO bummed over it. Sure I'd be upset, but not ranting, raving, pissed! BTW, your boss sounds awesome! I want a boss like that! :D

  8. First, let me say that I love my bosses too. They are really awesome. Did I mention that we went to Vegas last weekend for our Xmas party? :D.

Yes, my professor offers the final 4 times that week. If I had know a day or two before, I could have e-mailed him to arrange for a different time for me to go. The main problem is that Tanchen closes at 9pm, and Mapquest said it was 1 hr, 24 min drive from my work, and so even farther away from my school. I just couldn't do both. Bah!!!!

P.S. How do you feel about that writer? I don't remember hearing you ever talk about him and I'm not good with remembering writers myself.

  9. Comic store signings. Trips to Vegas. Where is this job, and where can I sign up?! :D

"Yes, my professor offers the final 4 times that week." Ouch! That really sucks! So if you had know beforehand, you could have planned everything out perfectly. Man... I don't even have anything cheerful to add now! That whole situation just worked out 100% against you!

As for Levitz, I think he's best known for his work on the Legion of Super-Heroes(but not MY version of the Legion). I know he is/was some sort of big-wig for DC(pres, executive VP or something)too. I'm pretty sure he's doing the current LoSH series, but since I hate that version of the Legion, I really don't have much to say about him.
