New Comic Day! February 27th edition

Hey X-Maniacs, sorry you have to deal with that unfortunate nickname, but X threatens me when I don't call you guys that. Anyway, it's your favorite day of the week again, New Comic Day. So, let's see what I'll be bringing home from the shop this week! My comic haul should consist of Deathmatch #3, Aquaman #17, Injustice: Gods Among Us #2 (Hell Yeah!!!), Avenging Spider-Man #17, Guardians of the Galaxy 0.1, Hawkeye #8, Uncanny Avengers #4, Uncanny X-Force #2, Uncanny X-Men #2, and Young Avengers #2. So with a total of ten books to choose from, you can expect me to review Avenging Spidey, Injustice: Gods Among us, and Uncanny X-Men, and those reviews will be up as always on Friday, Sunday and Tuesday. Now I'll hand things over to the second half of this Two-Man Power Trip, X! Til next time, this is JT, signing off!

Yes, hello X-Maniacs, as my erstwhile lackey said, it is indeed New Comic Day!  Huzzah and all that jazz.  I am X, and these are the comic books I'll be picking up today...  Deathmatch #3, I, Vampire #17, Teen Titans #17, Avenging Spider-Man #17, FF #4, Guardians of the Galaxy #0.1, Hawkeye #8, Thunderbolts #5, Uncanny Avengers #4, Uncanny X-Men #2, Young Avengers #2, Ultimate X-Men #23, Punisher War Zone #5, Comeback #4.  Well, it was looking like a pretty quiet week until I got to the Marvel books...  So yeah, this week it's 14 comics for yours truly.  That's a bit more than I would have hoped for, but at least we have a few good looking comics there.  My review days are Thursday, Saturday and Monday this week, and I'll be posting reviews for Uncanny Avengers, Young Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy for Thursday.  Annnd that'll just about do it for me.  Until next time?  X out.

  1. No comments about last week's Avengers?

Look forward to seeing what you think about Uncanny X-Force, Uncanny X-men, and Avenging Spidey.

    1. I actually dropped Avengers an issue back... It just wasn't doing anything for me. I'll stick with Secret, Uncanny and Young Avengers to get my fix. When Hickman leaves I'll give New and Avengers a try again.

    1. Thanks Missionary, we found out about what happened earlier in the week, I tried to grab a copy of Batman inc 8 but my shop was all out, but thanks for the info dude.

    2. Yup, same here. I check my shop but they didn't have any copies left.

  3. Yeah, does anyone have any idea what the impact is going to be on another title that seems like it would be, um, impacted by this development? I collected "Batman, Inc." in the DCU, but I didn't get it in the DCnU because it seemed like it was out of continuity. (Maybe it is?)

    1. Yep, he's dead so it's in continuity. All the bat books for next month's covers are little "In Memoriam" type covers for him.

    2. Bizarre. It's so weird that it happened in "Batman, Inc." It would be like Hawkeye getting killed in "Secret Avengers." Damian was actually one of the things keeping me reading the Bat-books. Not sure where to go from here.

    3. HA! Yeah, JT and I spoke at length about Damian's death last night, JW. I personally don't get what killing a 10 year old kid is going to add to the stories... We've already seen how Bruce(and Dick) deal with the death of a Robin, I don't see what new ground we're gonna cover... A few months of broody Bruce/Dick/the rest, and then back to normal. If anything, JT pointed out that there should NEVER be anymore Robins... Bruce has now lost THREE, including two that were his sons(adopted and blood), so yeah, after this there really should never be another Robin. I'm not happy at all about this though...

    4. I thought that, too, X. Losing one Robin is a tragedy; losing two Robins is just reckless. Between Dick, Tim, and apparently Jason (if "Batman and Red Hood" is actually the issue after next for "Batman and Robin"), he's got enough formers sidekicks to keep him on the straight and narrow.

But, yeah, I'm not happy. Despite not liking Tomasi, I thought the annual and issue #17 of "Batman and Robin" were two of the best issues that I've read so far this year, namely because of Damian. Damian adds a completely different dynamic to the Bat-family, one that brings out goods and bads that no one else does. I mean, who else made Tim seem like an impulsive dick? Who else made Jason look like the sane one? Losing him creates a huge whole and I just don't understand why it was necessary. It just feels like Morrison is taking his toys and going home.

    5. Don't forget Steph either, JW. She was a Robin and died too(right after Bruce "fired" her if I remember correctly). So yeah, I count that as THREE! Crazy! Bruce definitely needs to be locked up for child endangerment!

It took me SO LONG to warm up to Damian, I hated the character as he was written by Morrison, but Dini and Miller turned me into a fan in Streets of Gotham and Batgirl respectively, so I'm sad to see him go. Like I said, I just don't see the appeal of killing him now, and in Bats Inc. It would have made so much more sense if he betrayed Bruce to Talia, because THAT would have opened up so many doors. But now? Same old, same old. Oh yeah, and agree 100% on why Damian died here. Morrison wanted him dead to end his "epic." It would have made SO much more sense if it happened during Death of the Family. At least that would have given that storyline the teeth I felt it was lacking.

    6. Right! Three! Plus, wasn't Cassandra sort of a Robin and we just sort of ditched her? Good times.

Honestly, I really, really have no interest in spending the next 4-6 months of seeing Bruce mope in every Bat-book. I was just excited that we'd finally see some regular issues after the back-to-back Court of Owls/"Death of the Family" cross-over events. Now, it'll be 2014 before we get anything remotely close to a normal run of Batman stories. Ugh. DC, man. Every time I think they've hit bottom, they find new depths to plumb.

Totally agree with all your points. Almost anything would've been better than this. I wonder if Morrison and Snyder fought behind the scenes. I remember Matt Fraction talking about how Ed Brubaker generously offered up Bucky's death to him, since he was going to "kill" him anyway (as part of the "Winter Soldier" launch) so allowing Fraction do it would give "Fear Itself" its main moment. I mean, I effing hated "Fear Itself," but you can see how generous Brubaker was there. Something tells me Morrison? Not so generous.

    7. HA @ Good times... Yeah, being a Robin really doesn't seem like the best career move now! I don't remember Cassandra being a Robin(I know she went from Batgirl to Black Bat, iirc), but I could def be forgetting something. Bruce was a real dick to Tim throughout most of Tim's time as Robin, so I could easily see Bruce trying to use Cassandra against Tim in some way, shape or form. Tim's Robin run was pretty fun for the most part though. I miss books like that...

Ugh, right!? I remember we were actually going on about that in some post, where we were both happy that the BIG, HUGE, EPIC stories were over and we were gonna get a few simple Batman storylines. Now we'll get uber-moody Bruce, probably knocking Dick around, because that seems to be his MO when a Robin dies! DC can be such a hard company to be a fan of at times...

YES!! I remember the Fraction/Brubaker thing! Wasn't Brubaker gonna kill Bucky at the end of the Gulag storyline, but he held off so Fraction could have a major death in Fear Itself? That is such a great story because it shows how awesome Brubaker is. There must be some interesting stories behind the scenes at DC... I mean, I didn't even realize Bats Inc was in continuity! Seriously, it seemed like it was a hold over from before the reboot! And if DC was okaying Damian's death, come on, shouldn't it have been done in their big Joker event, not in some throwaway issue of a Batman series that was on the fringes? Very, very strange...

  4. Yeah, X and I were talking about that yesterday, how that book has basically been ignored since the New 52 started but now it's continuity. So yeah... I know in Batman and Robin the next arc I believe will be Batman and Red Robin, then Batman and Red Hood.

  5. I didn't felt Inc out of continuity but all the atention was on Snyder work and all the other books eccept Inc were dancing at Snyder's music.

It made sence his death in context of the story Morrison is telling in inc... Is a divorce kind of story with Batman and Talia as the parents an in separation kid are always damaged

  6. That sounds interesting, Alien. Maybe I'll pick up the TPB at some point (assuming that the series ends with Morrison leaving).

I think my main complaint is that I already get SIX Bat-titles ("Batgirl," "Batman," "Batman and Robin," DC, "Nightwing," and RHatO). Does DC really expect me to get every single one just to be able not to miss something as big as Damian dying? After all, "Batman, Inc." wasn't part of "Night of the Owls" or "Death of the Family." Also, I don't recall Batman, Inc. being mentioned at all in those titles since the reboot (as opposed to it being the driving force of all Bat-family titles right before the reboot). So, even if it was happening within continuity, they were clearly keeping it separate. When you're already getting SIX (SIX!) Bat-family titles, it just felt for me like the one that I could safely drop. I figured "Batman and Robin" would be where anything Damian-related happened. The fact that it wasn't just makes me feel like DC has unrealistic expectations for my loyalty. Part of me just wants to drop to "Batman" and call it a day since it seems pointless to try to stay current without buying all the titles.
