JT's Take: Avengers Academy #35

Hey everyone, with the recent news that one of my favorite ongoing series, Avengers Academy, will be canceled at issue #39, I decided today I would review the most recent issue of Avengers Academy today. Hopefully, the AA crew will get a team book in the Marvel NOW era, but for now I'll enjoy the team for as long as I can.

Avengers Academy #35
Summary: We start things off with Finesse, X-23, Reptil, White Tiger and Lightspeed trying to figure out a way to get their powers back. Using their collective skills, they manage to take down Zero after a brutal fight, and plot their attack on Brigg's estate. From there we jump over to a now cured Mettle and Hazmat, who are eager to spend time with one another, but are still worried about their friends. The two finally get to embrace and kiss with nothing between them. Meanwhile, Striker cozies up to Enchantress, just long enough for her to help him get the cure to get his powers back and Striker of course zaps her and gets ready to take down Briggs and get cures for his friends, when Briggs reveals he's been watching Striker, then uses Striker's salt content in his body to basically fry Striker with his own powers. Veil picks up the vial with the cure Striker took, which still has some of the serum left and runs to find help. Meanwhile the five powerless heroes head after Reptil and White Tiger's amulets, but are met by Coat of Arms, who says their amulets feel unappreciated, so she plans on taking them, but she'll have to kill White Tiger and Reptil first. Back with Veil, she runs to Mettle and Hazmat, and tells them how Briggs is about to kill Striker, and she needs help. Hazmat is hesitant because she likes being normal and the cure is forever, so Brigg's aerosol spray won't take her powers away again, but Mettle says how all he needs is that one kiss from Hazmat to last him the rest of his life, and they need to help their friends. Mettle drinks the cure and before Veil can drink it, Hazmat decides to, because she's the strongest and because Veil would dissipate into nothing. Hazmat's powers instantly returns but Mettle's do not for some reason. The issue ends with an extremely pissed off Hazmat ready to make Briggs pay.

Thoughts: It's crazy to think a year ago I didn't read this series and now it's one of my favorites. This issue was no exception, the stuff with Striker and Enchantress was great, the battle with the five heroes and Zero was great because we got to see Finesse take the leadership role. I really enjoyed the stuff with White Tiger and Reptil both wondering if their doing the right thing with their powers, and the scene with Hazmat and Mettle was of Peter/Mary Jane proportions. I loved this issue, and I can find nothing bad to say about it, just sucks that we only have four more issues left.

Score: 10/10

Veil: Jenny, I know Jeremy. The look in his eyes... he's going to kill them all. Finesse, 'Berto... whoever stands up to him...

  1. I'm Sad...

I wonder what Gage is going to do next Marvel havent anounced anything with him..

  2. I'm sure they have big plans for him, considering they trusted him with the First X-Men mini. Hopefully something else Avengers Academy related, or Runaways or both.

  3. Since issues 36 and 37 are the final ones for the final exam arc, does that mean the last two issues are going to be the crossover ones? That seems a weird way to end the series.

  4. Looks like 38 is the Flag football one and 39 will be a finale issue with the main cast.

  5. Sad to say, but it looks like I called it last month correctly. I am going to buy this story arc, as it seems that Gage is going to tie up as many loose ends as he can with regard to the original cast.

  6. It may be the end of AVengers Academy, but I hope that the First class stay at team. You know...they make their own team since they were just there to learn how to be the best heroes they can be, right? So maybe they can make their own team that Gage can make a series out of?

  7. Exactly what I was hoping for Dejay. Give the First Class the "Young Avengers" name and let them become their own team of heroes. Well, for some good news, it's been announced The Runaways will return this December. http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/08/26/dead-runaway/

    1. Sweet :) And just because I got a picture of Scorpion as my avatar, doesn't mean I don't like these guys. Seriously, they're some of the best heroes they made.

Hmm...should someone start a petition to get the first Class their own series? Heck, I would just be okay if they'd be called 'the First class'. Seriously, that would be a fitting name, wouldn't you say?

    2. Speaking of that, did you ever play MK vs. DC? It was cool, it wasn't as good as MK9 but I enjoyed it for the most part.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were already working on the series to be honest. Hell, I hope they are...

I haven't seen ya around much Dejay, you just find the blog or have I been missing you? And what other comics do ya read dude?

    3. I'm new on here, haven't really played MK vs. DC, but I heard some good things about it.

And yeah, I hope they're making that series. Though I'm curious...they revealed the child that Reptil and Finesse would have, do you think it'll be odd that Mettle and Hazmat have a kid in one of their futures?

    4. Ah, you should definitely check it out when ya get a chance. Or just wait for the Justice League game.

Did they? I don't recall that. I doubt they'd take it as hard as Finesse did when she found out though.

    5. I never saw the kid, but Jenny and Ken did almost do the...'dirty tango' if you know what I mean. So yeah, if their relationship does last that long (And more then likely it will), they may have a child.

Though I can already guess one of the kid's powers; immunity to Radiation. It would've died in the womb if it wasn't.

    6. Damn... that would've been an interesting story down the line if Hazmat got pregnant... damn you Marvel comics for cancelling Avengers Academy!

    7. I don't think they're going to get rid of these characters. But it would've been interesting.

But yeah, it was implyed that she and Ken almost did 'it', but she chickened out because of what happened with her Ex.

Though I think some closure for her would be good. You know...her meeting Greg Again and the two establishing a friendship? Since she did move on from him after all.

    8. Yeah, I hope they do something with the AA crew but look how long it took for the Runaways to pop up again after their last book ended...

I didn't even think about Hazmat meeting Greg again, that would be interesting, and I'm sure he wouldn't blame her for the situation, if I recall that was his parents and her parents moreso than Greg, so I'm sure he'd be willing to be friends again. Maybe we'd even see Ken get a little jealous.

    9. Yeah, I bet that would give Jenny some teasing freedom on his behafe.

Also...Got my own blog out. I'm planning on doing reviews of Superheroes themselves. I'm thinking of one of my reviews to be some of the Avenger Academy kids.

  8. Yeah, considering how jealous she was with the X-Kids came to stay at the Academy. And cool dude, link me and I'll follow it.

And yeah, she did get a little jealous of X-23. It didn't help that Reptil's future self caused the jealousy to start up.

  9. Cool, cool, cool. Gonna check it out after this reply.

I'm honestly bitter about the series ending in November but I can't wait to see how Christos ties up all of the loose ends in the series.

    1. Can't wait either to be honest. But yeah, I'm actually confused on why it's ending like it is.

But hopefully the series will get a big sale on the other comics and maybe we'll see more adventures with everyone's favorite school-aged heroes.

Heck, it would be interesting if they actually joined the Avengers. Wouldn't that be something.

    2. Here's hoping, I'm always happy to see more of the Avengers Academy crew.

    3. Indeed. So...got any ideas for what hero I should review first? I'm thinking of doing a well-known super hero to start with. Got any ideas?

      Delete
    4. I was actually thinking about that, ya can't go wrong with Batman or Spidey for the first guy.

      Delete
    5. Yeah, I was thinking of doing one of those guys...but who should be after one of them?

      Delete
  10. Maybe Venom or Nightwing depending on who you start with? Then ya could take it from there, Red Hood/Scarlet Spider, etc.

    1. Not going with a specific series of villains or heroes. I'm basically going with any hereos or villains in general. They don't have to be form the same series.

      Delete
    2. Well in that case, randomly pick whoever ya want dude.

    3. Alrighty then. The first review is going to be of the Dark Knight himself, Batman. Here's how I'm going to review them.

First I'll do stats, then their background, then their weapons or powers, then their villains, and finally my final thoughts on the heroes or villains. That sound good?
