Detective Comics #866

Detective Comics #866: Writer: Dennis O'Neil. Pencils: Dustin Nguyen.

Review: This comic tells the story of Dick Grayson in his current incarnation(Batman), as well as taking a look back at his time as Robin. Dick finds the Medallion of St. Dumas in the present, which causes him to think back to the first time he had seen the Medallion... Holy Flashback sequence Batman! Yeah, I couldn't resist... Joker steals the Medallion from a member of the Order of St. Dumas, which leads to Batman and the Order member getting into a fight. Joker manages to sneak away during the carnage, but is soon captured by Robin. The police search Joker, but don't find the Medallion, which Joker apparently stashed back at the scene of the original crime. This all ties into a story in the present involving Dick, and a man Joker framed for a theft, but that part of the story didn't do much for me, so I'm just gonna skip it!

What I Thought: I LOVED the artwork during the flashback story! It looked exactly how you'd expect a flashback story to look, bright and cartoony. Granted the artwork for the main story was extremely well done too, but I'm a sucker for that old cartoonish style. The story was good, nothing groundbreaking or anything, but a solid read. Will I remember it a month from now? Probably not, but it was a completely inoffensive way to spend a few minutes.

Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.I love that funky flashback artwork!

  1. The flashback art reminds me of Robin: Year One.

  2. Man that was a good comic Kello, Thanks for having me remember that. I loved Robin & Nightwing Year One.

I really enjoyed this comic too X, like you said the flashback sequence was fun and campy but I really liked the preset storyline with Batman's race against the clock. Because although he's Batman that seemed like SUCH a Dick Grayson move, racing against the clock to exonerate that man, just so he knows and can be at peace. It had me really invested into the story.

  3. I JUST read Robin Year One last night!!! I mean literally, just last night! I think it was in like Robin Annual #3 or 4 or something, but yeah, it's funny that you brought that up Kello.

As for the story, I think I favored the flashback parts because it was nice to see CLASSIC Joker, as opposed to the weird Ghost Joker that Grant Morrison has created...

  4. The flashback art reminds me a bit of the Question backup art that was done previously. A bit anyway. Maybe it's the same colourist?

  5. Man, you've been reading a lot X. Just so ya know I REALLY put a dent into my Birds of Prey, I'm on like issue 67 now. Yeah... I've been reading the hell outta that series, Lol.

Please don't even bring up Morrison and the crap he's done to Joker...

  6. Hey X, JT has summoned me to ask you a question. He wants to know how did former Batgirl Cassandra Cain learn how to talk?

    ^_^

  7. Yeah JT, with less to do around here now, I can spend an extra hour or so just kicking back reading back issues. I'm almost up to #60 in the Robin series, as well as having gone through a bunch of other little odds and ends I had to read. Remind me where you started reading the BoP series, and what you're currently up to.

What, JT can't ask his own questions now Falisha?! :P As for the answer... um, I'm not 100% sure... I kind of want to say that Spoiler/the current Batgirl Steph Brown helped her out, but I'm not really sure...

  8. Lol she was by the computer and I wasn't :P And I started at issue one X, bought the series off eBay, pulled one of your numbers. I started it a while ago and stopped at like three, picked up the series last week, and left off on #72 a few hours ago.

  9. Woo, that must have cost you a pretty penny JT! I know the early issues of BoP tend to be pricy/hard to find. So what storyline are you in the middle of now?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I spent like sixty bucks lol. So, not too shabby, guess I lucked out? :P

I actually just finished the storyline where Huntress & Vixen team up to infiltrate that Cult and Brainiac infected Oracle.

Oh also Falisha and I just watched Season one of Hell's Kitchen... I wanted Elsie to win haha.

  11. Dude, that's a GREAT price! And that's why I love eBay! Man, I wish I'd have known, I'm still trying to get my hands on a few of the earlier Birds books!

That storyline didn't really do much for me I don't think. I really liked the story with Savant and BC, I'm not sure if you've read that one yet.

Awesome! I have HK seasons 1 and 2 so far. 1 was where that crazy dude who talked to the Ramsay billboard, right?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yeah dude eBay is all kinds of awesome. I figured some of them might've been ripped or something but nah, everything looks cool.

Yeah, it was alright. You mean the one where Canary gets kidnapped or the one where they fight as Huntress watches? The current storyline I'm on, Zinda just joined them and their going around solving problems after the No Man's Land thing.

Lol yep, We started Season 2 actually. I found the first four seasons....via...the internet. Lol but yeah Ramsay has been tickling my funnybone, when he tells those customers who looked like models "Back to Surgery, Off with ya!"

    ReplyDelete
  13. The one where BC gets kidnapped was the one I think I really enjoyed. It was awesome seeing Dinah all messed up STILL going around kicking ass! That was like the complete opposite of the Green Arrow/Black Canary BC.

HA!!! I loved when Ramsay told off those old plastic looking bimbos! That had me rolling! That man can sure make me laugh...

  14. Yeah dude she had broken legs and a messed up shoulder and still whooped ass. And Huntress dating that nerd was funny but I can't believe she banged him... that was so random. I loved how Dinah was pissed when she found out Huntress banged Roy too. Man... that team has so many different things you can bring up, I love it.

I hated when Dinah beat up Savant. He's trying to change and she MADE him fight her, just to prove she could beat him, I get that she was pissed but that was kinda low for her.

  15. It's all of those little character moments that made me like that series as much as I did, and turned me into a fan of Gail's writing.

IDK, Savant REALLY humiliated her. It was one of those deals where I think Dinah needed the closure, no matter how petty it may have seemed.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Definitely. Gail has little things I think other writers wouldn't even think of and that's what makes her such a great writer in my opinion.

I get that. But I don't think anyone else would've pulled that. If someone beat Batman's ass I doubt he'd lure them into a fight just to get revenge if their on the same time. I mean if you wanna fight the guy, challenge him. Don't sucker him into a situation where he has to fight you.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, but that's what separates Dinah from Bruce I guess. I kind of liked the way she pretty much pushed Savant into the fight. It was more realistic to me. Any top notch fighter who thinks they were cheated out of a win would probably want a rematch. That's all Dinah wanted, although the way she went about getting it was kind of scummy!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'll agree with you there, I can see her wanting some revenge and proving that she can take him it just seemed so... out of place. Maybe it's a woman thing and she didn't like feeling weak? After all she's been through I can see that.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Mmm, that could def be it... Dinah has been portrayed as a victim before, most famously during the early part of the 80's GA series, so maybe she REALLY needed to beat the holy hell out of Savant for that closure, and to prove to herself that she wasn't a victim again.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Now that I can understand, because when thinking by that guideline it fits her character more than just wanting revenge for the sake of revenge. So when she got beaten and tied up back in the past and lost her Canary Cry, who did it? Because they never mentioned it in the issues of BoP I've read yet.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It was just some random bad guy actually. She was missing for a while, Ollie went out searching for her, and found her being tortured by some scumbags, which led to Ollie killing the guilty parties and rescuing Dinah.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So Ollie can kill people that torture Dinah but not the guy who blows up shit and inadvertently kills his granddaughter. Oh DC, you make such little sense.

    ReplyDelete
  23. THANK YOU JT! I couldn't have said it better myself! Ollie was ALWAYS killing fools back in the day! That's why it's so galling that all of a sudden everybody is outraged over the Prometheus thing... If EVER a villain deserved to die, isn't it Prometheus? And then people wonder why I've been slowly switching my allegiances back to Marvel! :P

    ReplyDelete
  24. "Killin fools" is probably the best phrase you've used for that. Yeah Prometheus deserves to die, probably more than anyone outside of The Joker. What I wanna know, is why Ryan Choi is dead and NO ONE GIVES A FUCK. I mean excuse my language but when fucking Sue Dibney died people had a field day but no one cares about Choi?!

    ReplyDelete
  25. HA, I should work "Killin' fools" into more of my work! :P

Nah man, it's a good point... I'd have to say that it's prob because a lot of DC fans probably don't even realize that Choi is dead(or even know who Choi was for that matter!). I mean he was killed off in some little throwaway one-shot deal, while Sue was killed in DC's biggest mini in years(back when it first came out). Plus the whole Dr. Light/rape thing made the story a bigger deal then it was with the mainstream because that was prob the first time rape was tackled by one of the big two on such a broad scale(that I can think of). Choi is just another sad victim of the GEOFF-ization of the DCU. >:-(

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hell you should make a BLOG called Killin Fools! Lol I'd follow it, and contribute :P

Man that sucks. I know you're right too, and I agree that Sue's death was bigger and more prolific (think thats the right word) but I mean, you'd think Choi, someone would care. Even a DC character that the guys dead. He was in the JLA right? I bet ya if Cyborg went missing everyone would care.

    ReplyDelete
  27. WHAT would that blog even be about?!?

Yeah, but like I said, with the whole Geoff-ization of things, I'm sure DC barely even wants to acknowledge that there even WAS another Atom. It must really suck to have been a big fan of that character, because I'd bet that as far as DC is concerned, he never even existed!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lol posts with fools gettin killed. The many victims of Wolverine, and of course anyone who passes Deathstroke or Deadpool or other easily murdering guys. :P

I agree and that scares me, because Jason got killed before so I'd assume he's safe, but our other guys are fair game. Wally could die, I'm shocked Connor Queen/Hawke isn't dead yet.

Hell I wish I could make a team with Jason, Connor, Wally and Arsenal...

    ReplyDelete
  29. So just scans of characters getting killed off? That's kind of... morbid I guess!

Dude, that's a GREAT point! I don't know HOW the hell Connor has survived thus far! I'm actually stunned they didn't just kill him off when they did in poor little Lian.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hey, you're the one who brought up Killin Fools! They could have your funny anecdotes under them.

Right? I was thinking of people who'd been replaced and I'm like what the hell? Connor is still alive?! He's saving it for a double whammy when he kills off him and Canary to bring back Dinah Drake.

Lol. Also, shouldn't Zinda and Dinah Lance be somehow related seeing as how their both from a Drake family which isn't a common DC name.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah, but YOU'RE the one who wanted to turn it into a blog! :P Would we really want a blog where I'd have to post Joker blowing poor Jason Todd to bits?

Huh, that's really weird, the Drake name thing... I wonder if there's a story there somewhere that some writer meant to get into one day but never did.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lol I was just spitballin yo! :P And besides, that's the one pic we'd NEVER post.

Yeah it's be cool if Zinda was like Dinah's aunt or something like that. Hell I'll pitch it to Gail and get some cash if I gotta :P

    ReplyDelete
  33. "Lol I was just spitballin yo!" HA!!! You and Kello must be having some INTERESTING conversations! :D

    ReplyDelete
  34. Lol we're both Michigan men, ya know :P Nah Kello is the one teaching me all the terminology! Haha

    ReplyDelete
  35. HA! I like the idea that it's a Michigan thing! It's like, "Those wacky Michigonians(?!)and their manner of speech..." :D

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lol yeah we gotta stay busy when we aren't watching the Lions lose! Oh speaking of sports, what are your Lebron thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, I'm not much of a basketball fan, but I've got to say, I think he missed a HUGE opportunity... If you're the best player in the world, and you have the chance to play for the NEW YORK Knicks, then dude, TAKE IT!!! And yes, I know, it probably sounds kind of egotistical of me to say that being a native New Yawker, but that's the place to be... Endorsements, commercials, the night life, come on, NYC has it all! What's Miami got? A whole mess of old people and wicked humidity! :P

    ReplyDelete
  38. And Hurricanes, let's not forget Hurricanes! And I don't mean the Football team. :P I'm also not a big Basketball guy but I agree, now if he goes the rings aren't because he led them to it, it's because he just happened to be on a good team.

I think he shoulda went somewhere like New York, like you said, so he can actually lead his team like he says and not just be apart of the team, ya know what I mean?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ha, that's right, I forgot about the hurricanes! Yet another "perk" of living in the Sunshine State!

Although I would have preferred it if he would have gone to NY, I just can't begrudge him going to an already SOLID Miami team... I mean yeah, you play to get paid, but when your career is over it sure would be nice to say that you were once a champion. I mean if it was me, I have to say I might have done the same thing... I mean you could stay with the Cavs, who just can't seem to get over that last hump, go to the Knicks, who always seem to be a mess, or go to Miami to play along side two other really good to great players still in their prime, I very well might have done the same thing... Although I'd probably be tempted to go to the Knicks... You win a title in Miami and you're a champ, but you win a title in NYC and you're a LEGEND! :P
