Comic Gazing for: 6/03/10

It's Wednesday, so it's time to go Comic Gazing... Well, kind of... With Memorial Day taking place this past Monday, the comic book release day was pushed back from Wednesday to Thursday, so no new comics until tomorrow. But Memorial Day or not, I have a schedule to keep, so here's the comics I'll be getting, you know, once they're actually released!

Adventure Comics #12: Well, this is the final Adventure Comic of my current subscription, and with how lousy the DCU has been lately, this is one of a few DC books I'll be dropping as I slowly begin to switch my allegiances back to Marvel. Interest Level: 1 out of 10.

Brightest Day #3: Probably one of the biggest comic related disappointments I've seen since the end of the House of M... Interest Level: 4 out of 10.

JSA All-Stars #7: I haven't read the past two issues, so yeah, I'd better get to that!Interest Level: 6 out of 10.

Justice Society of America #39: Interest Level: 7 out of 10.

Red Hood: Lost Days #1: Jason Todd + writer Judd Winick = HIGH expectations! Hopefully Judd can fix the character Crazy Grant Morrison wrecked in Batman and Robin... Interest Level: 10 out of 10.

Red Robin #13: Woo-hoo, now that Fabian Nicieza is taking over the writing duties in this series, I can FINALLY begin to read about one of my favorite DC characters again! Interest Level: 10 out of 10.

Superman/Batman Annual #4: Why not? Interest Level: 6 out of 10.

Avengers Prime #1: Yeah, I know BENDIS is writing this, but it stars Steve Rogers, Iron Man and Thor... Not even HE can mess THAT up... Can he? Interest Level: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Hawkeye and Mockingbird #1: My FAVORITE comic book archer, Hawkeye, and his insanely awesome (ex-)wife Mockingbird... TOGETHER in a series?!? THANK YOU Marvel!!!Interest Level: 10+ out of 10!

Thanos Imperative #1: Interest Level: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Not a huge week for me with only ten books, but there are a couple here that I'm REALLY looking forward to. Before I get to that though, DC easily takes the battle for my buck this week by a 7 to 3 edge. However, the comic I'm most looking forward to is Hawkeye and Mockingbird #1, a Marvel book... That's actually been somewhat of a reoccurring trend lately... I may end up buying more DC books, but I'm more interested in the Marvel titles I collect as of late. And with my recent EXTREME displeasure with the current direction of the DCU, coupled with my elation over Marvel's current direction, I can easily see myself picking up fewer and fewer DC books, and more Marvels as the summer progresses. For example, I'm dropping Adventure Comics and Flash from DC, while I'll be picking up Thunderbolts, Thor, and possibly Iron Man from Marvel. I guess I should consider changing my sign-off from Long Live The Legion, to Avengers Assemble!!!

  1. Big week for Red, Red Robin and Red Hood returning in a big way, can't wait to crack those open. And i'll be impartial in my review :P

    ReplyDelete
  2. But that's the best thing about running a blog, you don't HAVE to be impartial! Hell, I gave Dark X-Men #1 a 10 out of 10 based almost solely on the fact that Nate Grey returned to life in it! Screw journalistic integrity!! :P Well, unless it's shockingly bad... Then you should blast the hell out of it with BOTH guns blazing!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Lmao... I don't know what to say to that. Also, why does Nate look liken a savage in your pic? I always meant to ask, Dude looks like he's been eating rats.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Maybe one day I'll change the banner under the title of this blog to, "Screw journalistic integrity, This is X-Man's Comic Blog!!!" :D

He was kind of/sort of a vampire in that pic actually... It was a cross-over with Spidey and it involved Morbius... Basically, Nate THOUGHT he was becoming a vampire, so his powers began to alter him to LOOK like a vampire... Even though he WASN'T a vampire at all... GOD was Nate's comic horrible!!!

  5. Looks like you have some good reads for this comic gazing.

I'm super excited about Red hood and Red Robin.

As for Brightest day, I swear if something sweet doesn't happen I will be dropping that with the quickness.

As bad it may sound I just may go to the comic shop skim through it and decide whether or not to get it. Lol. I'm just browsing nothing wrong with that right? lol.

  6. I'm vaguely interested in Avengers Prime...what's the premise of that book? Does it take place in current continuity, or is it set in the past? I've really been getting back into the Avengers lately ("classic" Avengers, not the "Bendisvengers"). That's probably part of the reason why I enjoyed the first issue of Avengers so much, despite it being written by Bendis.

Oh and Falisha, I used to sit and read entire Ultimate Spider-Man trades in Barnes & Noble, so I wouldn't worry too much about skimming at the store. :)

    ReplyDelete
  7. As you can see Falisha, I'm super excited about the two Robin books too! I think this is like the first week ever that I've had THREE comics at a 10 in interest! As for Brightest Day, I think I've said enough about it already... I keep hoping it's all going to come together, but it just won't... I def don't blame you for your comic shop browsing though!

I honestly don't know what the premise or time frame of Avengers Prime is, all I know is what I've seen in the comic books Marc. I mean, the ads look REALLY good, the only thing is that Cap isn't in costume, which makes me believe that it's a recent story, but I'm not really sure. Whatever it is though, I'm a sucker for classic Avengers stuff, so I figure I'll at least give the first issue a read, and then take it from there...

"Bendisvengers"?! I like that SO much, I'm going to steal it and work it into a review somewhere down the line! ;-)

  8. Lol I love that you're so out there with your blatant favoritism :P And that sounds interesting lol, I actually like Morbius so I'd read it...

    ReplyDelete
  9. Aww okay Marc, I thought I was the only one who did that. But I used to sit and read novels while my mom shopped throughout the mall.

At my comic shop it's like they're not as busy sometimes and I would feel so awkward just standing there reading the comic while they stare. Lol, but making sure brightest day is worth a read is definitely okay to have those eyes of the employees judging me lol.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well JT, it was only a two issue x-over(between X-Man and Amazing Spider-Man), and you could probably get it DIRT cheap, so if you're really interested, I'll tell ya which issues it took place in.

Ha, just tell them that Brightest Day has been so bad that you have to browse before you buy. If they're real comic fans, they'll understand! :P

    ReplyDelete
  11. Lmao, well JT can vouch for one of the employees there. She's a total dummy on comics. Lol. JT was looking for Flash: The Fastest man alive, she said the only thing they had was the current Flash. Lmao. terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Please do X, I'd pick em up if their cheap as you say. And yeah haha that chick was SO confused. I'm like Flash: Fastest Man Alive, for a buddy we were with, and she's like oh I'll show you and walks over to The Flash #1 with Barry... I just sighed lol.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Is one of the crossover issues X-Man #50? Because I'm pretty sure I have that one lying around somewhere, and I know it has Spider-Man in it...actually, Spider-Man being in it is the reason I bought it!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hey, check this out, I've actually managed to get people talking about Nate!!! Now I can happily state that my life is complete! :P All right, the Morbius x-over stuff happened in Amazing Spider-Man #420 and then moved into X-Man #24. I can't IMAGINE those comics are worth anything! I'm pretty sure(positive actually)that Gen X #50 x-over with X-Man #50 Marc. Spidey was in and out of that series, so maybe he was in X-Man #50 too.

Heh... You'd think that if you were working in a comic book shop you'd take A LITTLE interest in what you were selling... I guess not though!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think she's just there for Eye-Candy to bring the guys in that haven't seen one off of a page before. Okay, that was mean, but eh. Anyway, thanks for the issue numbers X, marked em down for my next Wednesday trip.

    ReplyDelete
  16. HA!!! That was great! And it was even better because in the same breath you acknowledged that it was mean, and then didn't care about it!! Awesome...

Well, if you get 'em, hopefully you'll like 'em... Just remember, I didn't exactly recommend these comics...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lol you know me man, I'll acknowledge it's wrong and do it anyway! And I may just wait since you DIDN'T recommend them and said it, and I saw that Scan where Nate was a jerk to Spidey... I may wait until I can afford to waste money on it if it's as bad as you say it is.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The entire Nate series is kind of sucky, so yeah... I mean, I like Nate as a character and all, but the story-telling just sucked big time! If it makes you feel any better, these two issues were probably among the better Nate comics. I actually still have 'em out, maybe I'll review 'em for Flashback Friday...

    ReplyDelete
  19. In that case I'll wait on your review, sounds like Nate got Superboy'd and just had a horrible ongoing comic.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Huh, you know, that's a really good comparison... The only difference would be that SB at least got to work on a team(YJ), while Nate was stranded in nowhere-land... I'll NEVER understand the logic of naming a guy "X-Man", and then NEVER having him join up with the X-MEN!!! Hell, Nate barely even met up WITH the X-Men during his run...

    ReplyDelete
  21. The fact Nate has never been in the X-Men is weird... hell Spidey has damn near regular team ups with them but X-MAN can't join the X-Men?!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I was just looking through some of my back issues, and I was wrong about the X-Man issue I have with Spider-Man in it...it was actually X-Man #24, which I believe is part of the crossover in question since Morbius is on the cover:

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yup, that's the issue Marc. It was a two-part story which ran through Amazing #420 and X-Man #24. I think issue #25 was actually the point of no return for Nate's series... THAT'S the issue it all fell apart...

Oh, and I should probably clarify things a bit JT, before somebody tries to call me out. There was a 3 issue mini-series called Astonishing X-Men in the mid/late 90's where a few of the core X-Men(Cyclops, Jean, and of course Wolverine)left the team and made their own X-Men squad up. Nate was actually a member of that team, but since it was only a 3 issue mini, and they weren't REALLY the X-Men(although they were calling themselves that), I don't really consider Nate to ever have been a proper X-Man(heh). He never trained under Xavier or lived in the Mansion with the rest of the team, so yeah, to me he was never an X-Man. I'm sure some X-fans would probably beg to differ though.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That makes sense. So has he ever like, met one on one with Prof. X? And who's more powerful between the two? Also has he fought Cable? And lastly, is the Mansion called the X-Mansion?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yup, Nate met Prof X early on, but the two had one of those damned super-hero misunderstandings, which is why Nate wound up SO mistrustful of the X-Men. Oh, and Nate beat the HELL out of Prof X the time they battled! He kicked his bald ass down one side of the street, and then back up the other side!

And once again, Nate and Cable did the cliched, "Super-Heroes meet, have misunderstanding and then team-up to defeat bad guy thing". Nate and Cable x-over... I want to say 2 times, but they also crossed paths during the Apocalypse: The Twelve x-over as well. Off the top of my head I can recall two Nate/Nathan x-overs though. Once against Exodus and once against Stryfe. Yup, the Mansion is X-Mansion. Ha, I love talking about Nate!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lol Hank Hill style. Why do heroes always have those misunderstandings? At least give them a REASON!!

Seems like it'd be weird to team with yourself from another dimension, especially when Cable is all effed up in the face compared to prettyboy Nate.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Nah, it's THE ultimate unwritten rule in comics. If two heroes meet for the first time, there HAS to be a misunderstanding of some kind. Hell, most of the time the writers don't even bother with a reason or just give a really flimsy one, because it's expected anyway!

It's funny, 'cause the first time Nate and Nathan met up they would have this wicked psionic feedback whenever they were near each other, due to their powers reacting poorly when in close proximity to the same exact powers. The weird thing about that was the fact that Cable and Strytfe(who are clones)never had that problem, and in subsequent meetings between the two Nates that little problem was forgotten.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I read the Spidey Annual and he met Cap for the first/Second? time before Hawkeye was in the Avengers and such and they didn't fight surprisingly.

So either it was forgotten about it or they realized it'd be hard to make them interact and just dropped it. Does sound pretty sweet though... hell I'd hate to face those two together.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cap might just be the exception to the rule. Who would actually meet a guy who WEARS the flag and served in WWII and start a fight?! Well except for Hawkeye... But then that's why I love Hawkeye!

The power thing was a nice touch, because it made the meeting between the two seem that much more epic. Your prob right though, after that first meeting, it was prob dropped because it would make it hard for the two to interact if they were in constant agony! That's why the best ever X-team was the x-team from the 3-issue Astonishing X-Men mini! Nate, Cable, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Archangel and Wolverine! THREE major league telepaths, Wolvie's brawling and senses, Archangel for reconnaissance and Cyclops for the blasts and leadership. THAT team could take down ANY group of six characters!

    ReplyDelete
  30. So they fought eh... who won? Or did they settle it with no winner like always?

EVEN the team of Superman, Batman, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, Max Lord and Daken with Muramasa claws?

    ReplyDelete
  31. It was more like an ongoing pissing contest between the two, not a real fist fight. Well not literally(I'd hope!), but I think you know what I mean.

Sorry, but the fact that there are THREE Omega level telepaths on that team puts them over everybody else. Hell, Nate alone has been described as having powers akin to the Pheonix Force(a COSMIC entity), so yeah, just have Nate mind control Supes while Cable and Jean cover his back from the Martian and Max and yeah, game, set, match.

    ReplyDelete
  32. But you know I'm a huge Nate mark anyway, so I'd prob come up with a way for him to defeat Galactus, the Guardians of the Universe and Darkseid! :P

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lmao I understand, although the pissing contest sounds oddly interesting...

I don't knoooow, I say Daken uses his pheromones to confuse Jean, makes her attack Cable, Max and MM team up on Nate to keep him busy, meanwhile Bats, Flash and Supes are free to do whatever they have to, plus I'm sure Superman could knock everyone else unconscious before they even know what happened... :P

    ReplyDelete
  34. "although the pissing contest sounds oddly interesting..." I'm not touching THAT comment!!!

Pfft, your whole plan falls apart because Jean can just block out Daken's pheromones with a TK shield! :P JT, amigo, trust me, there's NO way you can win this arguement! Even when I KNOW I'm wrong I'll still say that X-team will come out on top! :P

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lmao says the guy who wanted Golden Guys thongs made for men :P

Don't make me do a poll of it on my blog, because we KNOW our more DCU based readers will agree, so lets call it a draw :P Bwahahahah

    ReplyDelete
  36. *looks back and forth* I don't know WHAT you're talking about JT!

Dude, if you EVER did that I'd rig the HELL out of that poll! :D I'd frigging vote like 100 times for Nate's team! I would too!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Haha, don't MAKE me bring out the email X :P I'm sure its still in my old mail folder.

Lmao you can't Multi-vote:P I'm tempted to do it now in my Ratings and Rantings just cause now...

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'd deny it all!!!

Trust me JT, I'd rig that poll... I'd find a way, and I'd rig it!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Lol I'll grab a tie and force a confession out of ya, Daniel Bryan style! Haha

Lmao that's it, it's going up in Ratings and Rantings, I won't even say whose team is whose (that word looks weird) but it's happening!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wait, wouldn't that just get you fired from the blogosphere? :P

Dude, you did say whose team was whose(you're right, that word DOES look weird!)! Regardless, the score is tied, and it looks like most of your regulars have voted already... Still, I GUARANTEE victory... >:-)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Lmao yep, but after my 90 day no compete clause is up I'd go to Livejournal :P Haha

Yeah well it was weird... cause it's like vote on these two random teams with no pictures haha, so I needed SOMETHING. I Should've switched em... and yeah I'm gonna win bro. :D

    ReplyDelete
  42. "Lmao yep, but after my 90 day no compete clause is up I'd go to Livejournal" FYI, that was THIRTY different shades of AWESOME!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever. Set up the vote on YOUR site, with YOUR picture for one of the teams, and I KNOW I'm still gonna win this one! Watch. :P Anyway, Marc explained it perfectly. Any rational comic fan will see things that way. Well except for the Arl... Hmm, he could be trouble... Note to self: ELIMINATE The Arl...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Lol I knew you'd like that one! Thanks dude.

DAMN IT!!! Lmao I just looked and now it's tied, last night I was ahead by three votes!!! And lol you know I'm gonna win, thats why ya didn't accept my bet :P

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh dude, I TOTALLY accept your bet! And I'm not really a betting man! THAT should show you just how confident I am about that poll! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Lmao well as of right now 11 votes have been cast and you're up by ONE, so I can make a comeback!

    ReplyDelete
  46. AWESOMENESS!!! How many more days do I have to sweat out my win for? Man, I'm sure looking forward to reading all of the praise you're going to be forced to heap upon me! :D

    ReplyDelete
  47. You'll be waiting for a win for a LONG time, but I'll be winning this Wednesday, so yeah. And you're up by 1....with 13 votes...thats a lot of votes!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Awesome, I'll plan the victory parade for Wednesday then! :P How many votes do your polls usually get JT?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thanks for planning my victory Parade X :D

And They usually get between 8 and 13 votes, and Just checked and as of right now there's 14 votes and it's tied... Lol

    ReplyDelete
  50. Dammit, why is it STILL tied?!? Just so you know, I'm a horrible sore loser. If my side doesn't win, I WILL throw a major temper tantrum, and kick things... Maybe people like the whole vote for one side or another thing. Damn, if I would have realized that, we could have done that for the draft!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Haha, I JUST checked again and it's STILL tied! 22 Votes dude... this is bar far the most cotes EVER. That's insane.

The fact you said a tantrum REALLY makes me wanna win now... Lol

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm just gonna come right out and say it... I think we should just forget about the whole bet thing, and leave it at that!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well I figured that considering we got a tie... I wonder if you'd say that if you had WON though haha.

    ReplyDelete
