Robin #59 (Dec. 1998)

Next up on our Young Justice Retro-Review schedule? How about a random issue of Robin! The Impulse issue set the bar mighty high, let's see if this issue of Robin can equal or possibly surpass it.

Robin #59:

What Happened: Robin manages to take down one of the many freaks running around Gotham, this one by the name of Steeljacket. From there we put the Robin stuff aside and deal with some Tim Drake stuff. First off, Spoiler(The former Batgirl, Stephanie Brown) asks a shocked Tim to go to birthing classes with her, then one of Tim's friends at school is presumably murdered by the school bullies. Tim is incensed by this turn of events because he could have stopped the bullies from taking his friend out behind the school bleachers, but didn't want to get into a fight and possibly reveal that he was Robin.

The Good: The fight with Steeljacket was fun, and the way Tim took him down was literally like something out of Arkham City! I always liked Tim and Steph's relationship... This comic was an extremely fast read, I finished it off in no time flat.

The Bad: Tim not standing up for his friend when the bullies came to pick on him seemed wrong somehow... I'm sure he could have fought the bullies and beat them without having to go into all-out Robin mode or even taken a beating to protect his buddy... The dean at Tim's school telling him one of his friends had been brutally beaten to death outside the school and then telling Tim to go back to class seemed like a pretty cold-hearted move... “Your friend's dead, Timmy. Now go back to your math class, the police will come by to talk to you later.”

The Verdict: The first two-thirds or so of this comic was pretty good... It just got kind of dumb at the end with the bullies. First off, it makes no sense that the bullies killed Tim's friend because there were witnesses who saw the bullies take the kid behind the bleachers... Besides that, the dean's reaction was just horrible! How do you tell a student, especially one who was friends with the dead kid, what happened and then send him back to class?! Bizarre...

Some of my favorite comic characters!

Here's a post that needs no introduction, some random comic scans of some of my favorite comic book characters! Ten of my favorite characters to be exact, five from DC and five from Marvel. And no, this isn't the definitive list of favorite characters for me, these are just 10 characters who came to mind for me the fastest. There are a few big omissions, but what do you want from me, I only spent like 20 minutes on this post! So without further ado, here they are in no particular order.

Arsenal.Now that DC has despicably eliminated Lian from even existing, I'll have to rely on back issues to see what an awesome father Roy was.


Captain America.Cap's not above bitch-smacking a teammate who isn't listening.


Batman(Dick Grayson).You tell him, Dick!


Ultron.Not many villains would take the time to ignore THOR to insult somebody. That's what makes Ultron extra special!


Jason Todd.Yep, Jason rules.


Hawkeye.That's right, Hawkeye once defeated a cosmic being and saved the universe by cheating at a game of chance!


Impulse.That is the most badass Impulse picture ever!


Bucky Barnes.Bucky took down IRON MAN! Think about THAT!


Robin(Tim Drake).And people think Jason was the high-strung Robin!


Nate Grey.X-Man: 1, Professor Xavier: 0.


You had to know I was going to close out this post with an X-Man scan! So yeah, there were a lot of omissions(Wally West, Kyle Rayner, Stephanie Brown, Daken, Hardball, Marvel Boy, and the list goes on and on), but like I said, this was just a quickie post. Given more time to think, I'm sure I'd have come up with a few different choices. But hey, that means I can do another post like this down the road! Anyway, that'll do it for me tonight, until next time, X out.

The Jason Todd Chronicles #2: Detective Comics #524

Since I'm not in the mood to do a full review of a new comic right now and with yesterday's surprisingly good DC news(which I shall get to in a moment), I figured I'd bust out another edition of the Jason Todd Chronicles. Shockingly, the NEW BEGINNING!!! of the DCU in September looks like it'll be FINALLY giving us the Jason Todd/Red Hood series all of us Toddaholics have been waiting for. It stars Jason as the Red Hood and is being written by Scott Lobdell, who's work in the X-books I grew up on. It also features everybody's favorite 6 foot tall alien bimbo, Starfire, and Roy Harper as Arsenal... Huh, that actually sounds like a really bad sitcom... Anyway, on the plus side, Roy had both his arms on the cover image I saw, all he needs now is Lian, and I'll be JUST about ready to forgive DC for all of their slights against me, imagined or otherwise. I still won't read ANYTHING with Hal Jordan or Saint Barry Allen in it, nor will I read anything written by Chairman Johns, but hey, at least for today, the news coming out of DC was good for a change. Sure half of their new comics sound TERRIBLE(I'm looking at YOU, Batgirl), and WAY too many are being written by artists(I guess the real writers are avoiding DC), but for now, my anger towards DC is sated. So there's the good news. The bad news is that I have to do a post about a comic starring the goddamn Squid. But hey, you can't win them all...

Detective Comics #524(March 1983):

Well this was a rather brisk comic... It was only 17 pages long... Whatever, let's get to it. We pick up from Batman #357(which was BRILLIANTLY reviewed by yours truly a day ago) with Batman having been tossed into a fish tank with a squid by the Squid. Yeah, I know... Lame, but I MUST soldier on and complete this post! Calling upon his vast knowledge of lame deathtraps, Bats manages to break free of the squid's death grip(that's squid with a lowercase “s”, not Squid with an uppercase “S”) and escape the aquarium and the Squid's warehouse, with only Killer Croc noticing Batman slipping away. The Squid is shocked(shocked I tell you!) that Bats managed to get away, and Killer Croc, thinking what any sane homicidal maniac would be thinking in this situation, tells Squid that he wanted nothing to do with him.Hot DAMN is that one fugly bastard!


Meanwhile, Dick Grayson throws a party at Wayne Manor and invites clowns and stuff to celebrate the Flying Todds circus act. Oh, and for some reason, Commissioner Gordon is there... You'd think he'd have better things to do with his time, but apparently not. Anyway, while Dick is introducing the Todds to the guests, Bruce Wayne sneaks in and motions to Dick that he needed to see him... Alone... Uh-oh! Get the bottom lotion ready!And this ladies and gents is Jason's ONLY appearance in this issue... Standing mutely behind his parents... Yeah, THIS was WELL worth whatever it was I paid for it...


Dick and Alfred go to check on Bruce, who decides to disrobe in the room RIGHT next to the party, holding his Batman shirt in his hand while Dick and Alfred tend to Bruce's squid inflicted wounds. Yeah, I bet that's not gonna come back to bite Bruce in the ass... Oddly enough, Alfred tells the gang that he'd seen similar wounds before on a sailor in England, making England that much scarier to me... I mean are there widespread squid/octopus attacks happening all over England?! Anyway, Jason's mother Trina bumbles into the room while Alfred is patching Bruce up... Whoops! Dick spirits her out of the room, but unless she's a blithering idiot, she's probably figured out one of Bruce's many dirty little secrets.If I had just blown the secret identity I'd held for YEARS to some woman I didn't know, I think my reaction would be a bit stronger then, “Oh.”...


While Bruce is busy sitting around slack jawed, Killer Croc is busy doing what I've wanted to do since I first saw the little creep, blowing the Squid away with a high-powered sniper rifle... Yes, I DID so want to sniper the Squid the moment I saw him!So long fatboy!!! BWA-HAHAHAHAH!!!!


This issue ends with Bats and Commissioner Gordon investigating the scene of the Squid's “tragic” killing. And no, I'm not posting a picture of their conversation because it really wasn't that interesting.

Final Thoughts: Yeah, I'm sure glad I brought THIS comic... So in Jason Todd's first two appearances, he's said a grand total of NOTHING, and appeared in THREE panels... In TWO comics! Well I will say this much, if you were reading these Batman books back in the day, there's NO way you'd ever think Jason would become the character he is today unless you were a) the guy writing these comics, or b) had access to a time machine and traveled forward in time. All I know is this, Jason had BETTER have some major face time in the next Batman comic I read! Dammit!

The Jason Todd Chronicles #1: Batman #357.

Hey gents and gentettes, new feature time... Kind of/sort of... With the impending end of the DCU NEW BEGINNING!!! for the DCU, and with me just ordering a mess of old Batman comics, I figured now would be as good a time as any to do a few Retro type posts on the old blog... All of the Bat-comics I snagged feature Jason Todd, the second Robin. Jason is one of those characters who you either love or hate. There's no real middle ground. I happen to be on the “love” side of that argument, which you probably figured out by the fact that I already stated that I recently picked up a mess of old Batman comics featuring Jason... Hmm... I seem to be rambling again... That usually means I should start wrapping this introduction up... Before I do, two things... The first thing is that I won't be giving these old Batman comics scores. Since they all contain Jason, and they're all old, I figure I'm going to like them, so scoring them just doesn't make sense. If I don't like them, trust me, you'll know from the tone of the post... As for the second thing... Huh, how about that! I completely forgot! Oh well. If I remember what it is I'll just delete all of this and replace it with whatever the second thing was. Okay! Let's get this roving carnival of horror started!!!

Batman #357(March 1983):

Yes, that's right, Jason Todd/Robin/Fake Nightwing/Red Hood/Fake Batman/Gatman/Hair-Dye Man/I think that's all of his nicknames, first appeared in a comic simply titled, “Squid”... I guess it could have been worse. His first appearance could have been in a comic titled, “Cockroach” or “Rat-Bastard” or something similar.Hey, Batman must read my blog!


This one gets stared in earnest with Bats discovering that the deadly, dangerous, incredibly dumb sounding former spy known simply as “The Squid” was making a move to take over Gotham's underworld since Tony Falco(Gotham's former top mob boss) was heading to prison. Naturally Bats tells his BFF Commissioner Gordon this grim news.I guess Bats was still perfecting his whole, “Sneak out the window without Gordon seeing it” act...


Hey, check it out, on the same page we get the first appearance of Killer Croc AND Jason Todd! Cool!Croc is the one in the trench coat. Jason is the kid flipping around on the trapeze. X is the guy typing this. You are the person reading it.


Yes, THIS is the Squid... Not only does he sound like an idiot, he looks like one too! Yeah, if I'M a criminal in Gotham, I'm not taking orders from some goof in purple checkered pants... “Yes I'm the Sqwid, and I weally, WEALLY suck!”


Bats figures that the Squid would try to kidnap and then kill Tony Falco as he left the courthouse(don't ask me how Bats figured the Squid was going to kidnap Falco as opposed to just, oh, I don't know, sniper Falco as he exited the courthouse), so Bats sneaks into the courthouse with the help of a female reporter and switches places with Falco.Um, as the world's greatest detective, you'd think Bats could tell the difference between a man and a woman, but apparently not...


So the Squid kidnaps Bats masquerading as Falco, but Bats sucks as an actor or something and Squid knows it was Bats the whole time. With his cover blown, Bats tears off his fake Falco costume and face, revealing himself, in FULL Batman attire, cape, cowl and all! Now THAT is pretty impressive! “Riiiiiip!” I want to know how he hid those pointy ears under the fake Falco mask!


The Squid sends his henchmen after Bats, and for once, the goons don't attack Bats black ninja style, but attack en mass, beating Bats down. Instead of shooting Bats in the head, unmasking him or something equally smart, the Squid instead instructs his men to toss Bats into a large aquarium containing, you guessed it, a giant squid!! Oh the humanity!!! Bats will NEVER escape THIS deathtrap! That Squid is a tricky customer indeed!Will Batman be able to escape the duel threat of the Squid and his pet squid? Will Bats end up fish food?! Will Jason Todd appear in more than two goddamn panels?!? Tune in next time, same Bat time, same Bat... um, blog.


Final Thoughts: So Jason Todd appeared in a grand total of TWO panels!!! And he didn't speak ONCE! GAH!!!! That means I just spent a mess of money on a comic starring THE SQUID!!!!! I suddenly feel rather ill... Here's hoping Detective Comics #524 has Jason... Oh, I don't know, saying and/or doing SOMETHING!!!What the hell, I might as well post the other panel Jason appeared in too...

Origins and Omens flashback, part 2.

Hey gents and gentettes, as promised, here's the second and final part of my look back at DC's “Origins and Omens” stuff from 2009. If you have NO idea what I'm going on about, then click here to be whisked away back to the magical land of Yesterday, where all of your questions will be answered... Mostly. Okay, that takes care of the intro, let's jump right into the main event.


First up today is Nightwing #153.-The top picture could be Tim dressed as Batman telling Dick that he should be filling the mantle
-Obviously that would be Dick training Damian under the watchful eye of Talia in the Cave. I don't think that exact scene played out, but hey, they were close enough
-I could see the EVIL Jason Todd Batman holding a gun to Dick's head
-I don't recall Dick making out with somebody dressed in a Batgirl/Batwoman outfit... That's a real interesting picture, because that could very well mean that DC did indeed intend on healing Barbara Gordon. Either that or Dick is swapping spit with Stephanie Brown, which would be weird on like 6 different levels.


Robin #183-Okay, we have EVIL Jason Todd Batman menacing Tim
-Tim arguing with Dick during Battle for the Cowl
-Anarky HAS been a thorn in Tim's side
-And Tim also worked with Ra's Al Ghul.
-Hey, check it out, this one was totally right!


Secret Six #6-Wonder Woman did make a guest appearance in this series
-And I guess Bane did beat up some faceless goons...
-As for the Deadshot scene? I guess that could have happened... I can't recall it though


Superman #685-Mon-El did indeed fight Atlas
-He also teamed with Guardian(and I'm guessing Nightwing?)
-He also made sure to take some time for some good old fashion lovin'
-I can't say I remember a Green Lantern who looks surprisingly like Lex Luthor battling Mon-El... Lex as a Green Lantern would be ALL kinds of awesome though.


Teen Titans #68-Let's see, Kid/Red Devil did die
-Kid Flash(and his costume)did rejoin the team
-Static did show up, albeit briefly.
-THANKFULLY Wonder Girl and the Fake Blue Beetle never made out, because I would have vomited on the comic immediately!
-I don't think anybody got pregnant
-And I also don't remember Ravager trying to poke out Wonder Girl's eye.
-Huh, this was one of the rare instances where Scar was way off with her predictions... What gives, Scar?


Titans #10-Wally West did pretty much fade away because of the overwhelming powers of That Damed Saint, Barry Allen
-Roy Harper did wind up in a hospital bed(and eventually as a one-armed junkie who would go on to stroke a dead cat in an alley...)
-I can't say that I remember Brother Blood and Raven fighting recently, although it may have just blended into one of their other many, MANY battles
-I can't place the woman kissing Beast Boy, so I don't think that happened either
-And I don't recall the scene with Donna either... Is that supposed to be Indigo? Too bad that didn't happen!
-Wow, I guess the lesson here is that Scar can't accurately predict the future of any team with the word “Titans” in it...


Vigilante #3-Wow, I actually collected this series?!
-Vigilante did fight the Teen Titans
-As well as the Titans
-He also fired his guns, so kudos for that one
-And I vaguely recall some sort of bizarre cross-dressing killings storyline, so yeah, that happened as well


Wonder Woman #29-Wonder Woman did take a swim(really, she did!)
-A few Amazons did get pregnant
-Tom Tresser did leave WW
-And Warkiller/Achilles did spear a police car
-I don't recall WW with her hands covered in blood, although that very easily could have happened.


So that's it. Our brief trip to the 2009 version of the DCU is complete. I'd say that Scar's glimpses into the future were pretty accurate, except when the word “Titans” was involved... Then it was just a crap-shoot... Hopefully you enjoyed checking out these last two posts as much as I enjoyed crafting them. The Random Scan of the Week, with added inane chatter!

Hey all, X finally here with some excuses, AND a random scan! So I've been pretty lax with posts, but since I'm pretty much caught up with my new books, I don't really have a whole load to blog about... Sure, I could do a big long post about the Robin comics I'm currently flying through(I'm 93 issues in now!), or the Trinity storyline, but really, who'd want to read that?! I'll TRY to post some thoughts on Green Lantern #1 some time soon, but with school starting back up again on Tuesday, we'll have to play that by ear. Besides that, I've been lounging around enjoying the CRAZY hot weather, hanging out with family, playing video games and of course reading comic books. I haven't even been here to the blog the past two days, so I'm sure I have a lot of stimulating posts on my favorite blogs to sift through after I post this. So um, yeah, that's what I've been up to. Anyway, since it IS Sunday, I still have the whole random scan thing to deal with. And with today being Independence Day in the good ol' US of A, what better character to post a pic of then... The Joker!!! Yeah sure, I could have gone and posted a Captain America scan, or even a Superman, but that would have been TOO obvious, no? Well, that'll do it for tonight, I'll talk to you guys later. X out.Leave it to the Joker to figure it all out! From Robin #85(Feb. 2001).

Flashback Friday: June 11th

Get ready for a blast from the past, it's time for Flashback Friday! This week's Flashback is way better then last week's, since I've actually had the time to lay around reading comics! We're still pretty Robin-centric, but I've also thrown in a few Marvel books, a Wildstorm trade and some DC comics other then Robin, so this week is a bit more varied then last week was. Alright, let's get to it!

Robin #1(Nov. 1993): Hey, it's finally the beginning of Robin's ongoing series! Once I'm done going over this one, I only have 183(plus annuals) to go! Some car thieves calling themselves the Speedboyz are stealing fancy cars in the suburbs of Gotham. Tim decides to try to catch them since he was banished from the Batcave by the crazy Batman(Jean Paul Valley). Tim also winds up running afoul a cop from the suburbs who doesn't like the idea of city-folks(like Tim)getting involved on his turf. Score: 8 out of 10.

Detective Comics #650(Sept. 1992): Tim and Alfred save a Geraldo type of news reporter after he tries to open up the booby-trapped vault of a dead mob boss. Perfectly acceptable solo type story. Score: 7 out of 10.

Wolverine: Weapon X: Insane in the Brain TPB(Collects Wolverine Weapon X issues #6-10): Wolvie wakes up in an insane asylum with no memory of who he is or why he's there. And to make matters worse, the doctor in charge seems 51 cards short of a deck... This is definitely not a conventional Wolvie story, it's at times laugh out loud funny, and VERY over the top. If you're looking for good, gory fun, I'd definitely recommend this. Score: 9 out of 10.

Robin #2(Dec. 1993): Tim manages to take down the Speedboyz, and the Cluemaster escapes from Blackgate prison. Score: 7 out of 10.

Robin #3(Feb. 1994): Tim has difficulty managing his Tim Drake time and his Robin time, which leads to lots of trouble between him and his Russian girlfriend. While investigating Cluemaster's jail break, Tim runs into Spoiler, who was also hunting for Cluemaster(who happens to be her father). Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Flash 80 page giant #2(April 1999): You know, I read this only a few days ago, and I honestly don't remember WHAT went on here! I guess I'll just type the score I wrote down after reading this comic and move on... Score: 6 out of 10.

Robin #4(March 1994): Tim and Spoiler decide to work together to find Cluemaster. Cluemaster and his lackeys steal a van full of money, but are spotted by Tim, who winds up getting trapped with Cluemaster in the back of the van, while Cluemaster's lackey's bury the van in concrete to hide it from the cops. Score: 7 out of 10.

Robin #5(April 1994): Tim and Cluemaster are trapped in the back of the buried van and begin to rapidly run out of air, which leads to a few funny moments like Tim contemplating killing Cluemaster to double his air supply, and then thinking about how disappointed Batman would be to learn of Timmy's impure thoughts. Ultimately Spoiler beats up her father's lackeys and rescues her dad and the Boy Wonder, getting a kiss from Robin in return. Score: 8 out of 10.

Robin Annual #1(1992): This was a part of the Eclipso: Darkness Within storyline. Tim tries to prevent Anarchy from using several Eclipso black diamonds Anarchy had gotten a hold of. In the end, Tim manages to stop Anarchy and save the day. Score: 8 out of 10.

Adventures of Superman Annual #5(1993): This was a part of the Bloodlines storyline. Superboy(back when he was still calling himself Superman)and Sparx wind up facing some of those Bloodline Parasite things. I didn't understand a SINGLE thing about this storyline, but ultra-cocky Superboy did make me laugh. Score: 5 1/2 out of 10.

Robin #6(May 1994): This was actually the second part of a three part x-over with the Showcase series. Unfortunately I couldn't find the first and last part of this x-over, so I really didn't get a good feel for the story. It had to do with Huntress and Tim teaming up to deal with some mobsters from Huntress's past. Score: 6 out of 10.

Robin #7(June 1994): This comic was another crossover, this time to the Knightquest storyline. Bruce Wayne and Tim's father return to Gotham, and Tim reveals to Bruce that his hand-picked Batman(Jean Paul Valley)was losing his mind and killing Gotham criminals. Bruce and Tim head to the Batcave to confront Jean Paul, which leads to Bruce getting thrown into the Bat-computer before JP takes the Batmobile and leaves. Tim tries to follow Jean Paul in his Redbird car, but can't keep up with the crazed Jean Paul. In the end, Bruce realizes that he'll have to reclaim the Batman mantle from Jean Paul. Score: 8 out of 10.

Gen13: Road Trip(Collects Gen13 Vol. 4 #7-13) This is the second Gen13 trade written by Gail Simone, and unfortunately, the last. This trade fixes a lot of what I was complaining about with the last trade, and focuses on the 5 kids, instead of the villains. We get 5 issues that highlight each of the Gen13 members, as well as a pretty good battle between Gen13, their evil clones, and the Authoriteens... Don't ask! There were some hit or miss moments, but overall, this was a pretty satisfying trade. Score: 8 1/2 out of 10.

Amazing Spider-Man #420(Feb. 1997): I've already read this comic years ago, but I figured it was due for a re-read. This is a Christmas story where Spidey meets up with Nate Grey(X-Man)for the first time. Naturally the two start off at odds, but by the end of this one they wind up celebrating Christmas Eve together. Score: 8 out of 10.

X-Man #24(Feb. 1997): This is another comic I'm re-reading. Nate is attacked by Morbius on his way home from Spidey's house, and for some unexplained reason begins to turn into a vampire(even though Morbius can't create other vampires...). Spidey finds vampire Nate and the two decide that if Nate found his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Threnody, he'd revert back to normal... for some reason... The two heroes locate Thren in a cemetery, but find Morbius there as well, which leads to Morbius coercing Thren into helping him fight Nate and Spidey. Ultimately Morbius runs away, which leads to Spidey chasing after him, and Nate scolds Thren and leaves her... Ahhh, NOW I remember why I hated this series! Score: 5 1/2 out of 10.

And there we go, another Flashback completed. Just so you all know, I won't be looking at Robin #8 or 9 because I just recently read those comics in the Knightfall vol. 3 TPB. Hope you enjoyed this week, and see you tomorrow for the horrible Best of the Rest.

Flashback Friday: June 4th.

Get ready for a blast from the past, it's time for Flashback Friday! Well, kind of... With how busy the beginning of this week was, I really haven't had much time to lay around reading back issues, so this week's Flashback is going to be brisk. And by brisk I mean only 5 singles and a trade... But hey, that's better then nothing, right?

Robin III #3(Jan. 1993): We're still working our way through the final Robin mini-series before he received an ongoing. This issue begins with Tim lying to his guidance counselor about where all of his bruises came from, claiming a bully did it. The counselor still felt that the bruises were coming from that cad, Bruce Wayne, but had no proof. Later on, Tim and Huntress go out trying to learn the whereabouts of the Russian girl who was kidnapped by the Russian mob. After a fight against some Russians, Tim and Huntress are told that the girl was dead. While the Russians were licking their wounds, King Snake's Ghost Dragons capture a Russian and learn about the Russian mob's plans. Oh, and Tim wakes up with a swollen eye, which he fears is going to be blamed on Bruce once the counselor finds out. Score: 8 1/2 out of 10.

Robin III #4(Feb. 1993): Tim cuts school so as to avoid the guidance counselor, and later that night heads out to meet with Huntress again. The two wind up finding KGBeast, and narrowly avoid getting killed by the crazed Russian assassin. KGBeast gets away, and when Tim returns home that night, his father informs him that he was being sent away to Metropolis since Tim was obviously hiding something. Definitely my favorite issue out of any of the prior Robin mini-series. Score: 9 out of 10.

Robin III #5(Feb. 1993): Tim heads out to meet up with Huntress again, and the two finally discover the location of the Russian mob's counterfeiting operation. The two split up, and Huntress winds up being discovered and defeated by the KGBeast(off-panel!!!). Tim finds the Russian girl from the beginning of this series(who he thought was dead), and is discovered by a bunch of angry Russian mobsters. Score: 6 1/2 out of 10.

Robin III#6(March 1993): King Snake and his Ghost Dragon gang attack the Russian mob's counterfeiting warehouse, which gives Tim the chance to get away with the mobsters with the kidnapped Russian girl. KGBeast and King Snake wind up having a pretty fun fight, and Tim rescues Huntress. Snake and his Dragon's chase KGBeast and the Russians away, and Tim tells Snake that he can have all of the counterfeit money, provided he allows Tim, Huntress and the Russian girl safe passage to leave the warehouse, to which Snake readily accepts. Tim later reveals to Huntress that he had messed up the counterfeiting equipment, making all of the phony money worthless. This mini ends with Tim and his father making up, with his father deciding he wouldn't be sending Tim away to Metropolis. Score: 7 out of 10.

Detective Comics #796(Sept. 2004): Batman and Robin(Stephanie Brown)go after the recently escaped Victor Zsasz. The Dynamic Duo discover a sliced up body in a subway station, and while they are investigating the area, Zsasz spots Steph and decides that she'll be his next victim. Bats sends her away, since Zsasz was too dangerous a foe, and while she was leaving, Zsasz captures her(whoops!). Bats realizes what had happened and tracks down Zsasz before he is able to kill Steph. Zsasz nearly kills Bats, which leads to Steph almost killing Zsasz(!). She fails to do so(mainly due to dumb luck), and Bats takes Zsasz in, but not before voicing his displeasure at Steph's actions. Score: 8 out of 10.

Gen13: Best of a Bad Lot TPB(Gen13 Vol. 4, Gen13 #1-6): This is a re-imagining of the Gen13 team, as told by writer Gail Simone(of Wonder Woman and Bird of Prey fame). A crazy(but HILARIOUS)doctor creates meta-human teenagers, who are forced into compromising situations in order to entertain a bunch of rich sickos who pay to watch the action on-line. The kids are unaware of their plight until the day the crazy doctor sends out a bunch of his foot soldiers to capture the teenagers to bring them back into the program. The story was good enough to get me interested in reading the next trade, so that's a good thing. The crazy doctor stole the show for me(he spent much of this trade wearing footsie pajamas!!!), as the 5 members of Gen13 were kind of bland and interchangeable. Hopefully they'll be given more of an opportunity to shine/establish themselves in the next trade. Score: 8 1/2 out of 10.

The Random Scan of the Week!

Hey ya'll, tis your loyal servant X here, dutifully posting the random scan of the week, even though this past week has been BUSY for me! Aren't I a swell guy? Anyhow, I'm not really sure if I'll have any new reviews up tomorrow night(with the cleaning and unpacking and such), but if I don't have time to post reviews, I'll definitely post a random scan. Flashback Friday: May 28th.

Get ready for a blast from the past, it's time for Flashback Friday! Or maybe I should start to call it Tim Drake Friday... Although I do have a few non-Tim Drake Robin books to check out(like 2...)this week is very Timmy-centric. Next week once everything settles down(provided I can find everything!)I fully intend on reading the second Wolverine Weapon X trade, as well as a Gen 13 trade that was written by the uber-talented Gail Simone. Why Gen 13? Because my sister has been raving about it, and anybody who knows my sister knows she doesn't rave about ANYTHING, so I figure this Gen 13 book MUST be worth a look. But that's next week, I still have this week to get through. So without further ado, here's this week's back issue bonanza.

Wonder Woman #113(Sept. 1996): This is a very early Wonder Girl appearance, and let me tell you, Cassie was ANNOYING back in the day! Cassie winds up stealing a bunch of Wonder Woman's artifacts and goes hunting the villainous Decay. Decay does a good job of trouncing Cassie, who is eventually saved by Wonder Woman. Score: 6 out of 10.

Flash 80-page Giant #1(Aug. 1998): 7 different stories here, so I'll try to quickly touch on each one. The first was a stinker where Wally West envisioned his life had he not gotten his speed powers(he was a paralyzed bum for some reason...). Next we had a flashback story with Barry Allen and Jay Garrick against the Shade in a story that actually made me slightly embarrassed to call myself a Shade fan... It looked like he was wrapped in black tin foil! Next was a fun little Impulse story where he was dealing with Gorilla Grodd and an army of intelligent rodents. Story 4 was a pretty good Jesse Quick story, while story 5 dealt with Max Mercury and Babe Ruth... Yes, THAT Babe Ruth. We then had a surprisingly good story about future Flash John Fox, and closed the book with a story in which Wally West met up with Mark Millar, who was hoping Wally would give him an idea for a new Flash story. As for a score for this comic, I just averaged the scores I gave all 7 stories. Score: 6 1/2 out of 10.

Robin II #1(Oct. 1991): This was Tim Drake's second mini-series. With Batman out of town, the Joker breaks out of Arkham and kidnaps a computer whiz. Tim winds up running into the Joker while he was kidnapping the computer guy, and Joker freaks out at the sight of Tim, since he thought Robin was dead. In the end, Joker manages to escape with the computer guy. Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Robin II #2(Oct. 1991?): Tim searches Gotham hoping to find Joker, and eventually does. Joker winds up handily beating Tim, and is ready to kill the fledgling Boy Wonder, if not for the interference of the Gotham City police. Once again, Joker escapes, but realizes that Batman must not be in town. Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Robin II #3(Nov. 1991?): Tim continues his hunt for Joker, but is unable to track the madman down. Joker drugs the computer expert he had kidnapped earlier and begins to wreak all kinds of computerized havoc throughout Gotham. Joker promises to cease his computer terrorism if he is given one billion dollars in a truck with Batman as the driver. Score: 6 out of 10.

Robin II #4(Dec. 1991?): Tim and Commissioner Gordon manage to outsmart the Joker by giving him an empty truck with a fake Batman automaton driving it. Joker tries to escape, but this time Tim catches him and ends up besting Joker, finishing the fight by tossing Mistah J into a vat of sewage, where he is fished out and arrested. Score: 7 out of 10.

Batman #480(June 1992): Tim Drake's father is finally released from the hospital and no longer wants his son hanging out with Bruce Wayne. As Robin, Tim manages to catch some goons who were embezzling money from his father's company, and ultimately moves out of Wayne Manor, although this issue ends with Alfred showing Tim some real estate listings, including one right next door to Wayne Manor. Score: 7 out of 10.

Robin III #1(Dec. 1992): This is the final Robin mini-series before DC finally relented and made the Robin comic a regular monthly. Huntress is running around Gotham busting heads, and Tim winds up running afoul the KGBeast, who was destroying a Russian owned store whose owner wouldn't pay the Beast's handlers protection money. Score: 6 1/2 out of 10.

Robin III #2(Jan. 1993): Tim is unable to prevent the KGBeast from killing the store owner from last issue, or from halting the Beast from kidnapping the store owner's teen-aged daughter. While chasing after the Beast, Tim happens to wander into Chinatown, where he is immediately attacked by his old foes, King Snake's Ghost Dragons. The Dragons trounce Tim, but he is saved by Huntress. Tim and Huntress decide to work together, since they were both after the KGBeast and his handlers. Meanwhile, Tim's guidance councilor believes Tim is being abused by Bruce Wayne because of all the bruises he's always coming to school with... If she only knew... Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

A Random Scan...

So I was planning to post a review of Adventure Comics #11, but I'm just not up for it tonight... So instead, I figured I'd go the lazy route and simply post a random scan. Well, a not so random scan actually... See, I'm going to do a Young Justice week over at the pic blog, so I figured I'd get a bit of a head start here and post something from the predecessor to Young Justice, the JLA: World Without Grown-Ups mini-series. Hopefully I'll have at least ONE new review up for tomorrow night, but until then, here's that scan.Hmm, I could have sworn that I had posted this scan somewhere before, but I guess not... From JLA: World Without Grown-Ups #1(Aug. 1998).

Flashback Friday: May 21st

Get ready for a blast from the past, it's time for Flashback Friday! JT won the contest to give me an intro for this post, so thank you JT! The check is in the mail... Really, it is... Anyway, it's already Saturday, and I haven't even started this post yet... Yes everybody, procrastination, thy name is X! With that said, I'm going to cut the intro WAY short so I can try to get this post up before I fall asleep.

Robin #4(April 1991): Tim Drake, who is still training for the Robin spot, gets some training help from Lady Shiva(and really, who better to learn fighting techniques from?)and King Snake gets his deadly Nazi plague. As a loyal(but insane)citizen of the United Kingdom, Snake wants to unleash the plague in Hong Kong before it gets handed over to the Chinese. By the end of this issue, Tim, Shiva and Tim's friend the ex-DEA agent have tracked Snake down and are preparing to invade his penthouse stronghold. Score: 7 out of 10.

Robin #5(May 1991): Tim, Shiva and the DEA guy break into Snake's penthouse building and try to prevent him from unleashing his plague. Snake winds up killing the DEA agent, but Tim surprisingly manages to defeat King Snake in one-on-one combat. Snake ends up falling out the window, presumably to his death. With Snake out of the picture, Tim destroys the plague and burns all of Snake's dirty money, because as we all know, burning stuff is cool!!! Score: 7 out of 10.

Batman #465(July 1991): The real notable thing about this comic is this issue was the first time Tim(as Robin)and Batman went out on patrol together. Bats was still somewhat overly cautious with Tim due to Jason Todd's death still being fresh on his mind, but all in all, things turn out well for Bats and his new Boy Wonder. Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Batman #466(Aug. 1991): Much like the issue before this one, this issue dealt with an early Batman and Tim Drake Robin story. The two try to capture some mobsters, they run into gangs, and Batman is over-protective of Tim. Score: 7 out of 10.

Batman #467(Aug 1991): King Snake's gang(the Ghost Dragons)from the Robin mini-series turn up in Gotham City and wind up scoring lots of illegal guns. After watching how they were operating, Tim believes that King Snake was somehow still alive, while Bats refuses to believe Tim's words, figuring somebody else was calling the shots for the Ghost Dragons. Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Batman #468(Sept. 1991): So it turns out Tim was right and King Snake did indeed survive his fall in Hong Kong, and is now obsessed with getting revenge on the Boy Wonder. With Snake and his gang obsessed with getting their hands on Tim, Batman decides to hold him back, refusing to allow Tim to help on the Ghost Dragon case, which kept putting Bats in constant jeopardy. Score: 6 1/2 out of 10.

Batman #469(Sept. 1991): Batman manages to track down King Snake, and the two battle one-on-one. Bats manages to defeat King Snake, but nearly gets his head blown off by one of Snake's men, if not for the timely arrival of Tim. Instead of thanking Tim for making the save, Bats yells at him for disobeying his orders and getting involved in the case... Ah Batman.... Score: 7 out of 10.

Batman #470(Oct. 1991): Batman and Robin go after Maxi Zeus, who was given some sort of godly artifact by the Cheetah to hold on to. Tim is still growing into the Robin role here, which leads to some miscommunication between him and Bats, but in the end the Dynamic Duo manage to defeat the inept Zeus and his gang and reclaim the artifact. Score: 7 out of 10.

Wonder Woman #109(May 1996): Wonder Woman winds up having to face off against the Flash, who is acting uncharacteristically insane. Flash runs through WW's city(Gateway City)destroying things, and acting aloof, which leads to a WW/Flash showdown. WW eventually manages to snare the Flash with her lasso and unmasks him, only to discover that it is a young man who she is unfamiliar with. Before the “Flash” can be taken to prison, he explodes into a bunch of white dust... Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Wonder Woman #110(June 1996): This time, a young and aloof Sinestro attacks Gateway City, so WW has to attempt to take him down. WW knows for a fact that Sinestro is dead, so she isn't quite sure what to make of this “Sinestro”. Much like Flash from last issue, “Sinestro” never says a word and just seems bent on mindless destruction. WW(along with some help from Champion)finally manages to capture “Sinestro”, but much like last issue, “Sinestro” explodes in white power when captured. We learn that some computer program was creating these menaces, not realizing the danger. Oh, and this issue ends with the computer creating Doomsday! Score: 8 out of 10.

Wonder Woman #111(July 1996): Fake Doomsday takes to the streets of Gateway City and stomps a mudhole into WW. We also learn that some mad scientist had put the brainwaves of his dead son into the computers at his lab, and that the kid's brainwaves were creating the fake heroes and villains from the past few issues thinking he was simply playing a video game. Also in this issue we have Cassie Sandsmark dressing up as Wonder Girl for the first time. Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Wonder Woman #112(Aug. 1996): Once again Champion comes to WW's aid, but not even the combined powers of WW and Champion are enough to stop Doomsday. The mad scientist, realizing that his experiment had caused all of the destruction in Gateway City, decides to overload his computer systems, which causes Doomsday to mutate to the point where his bone growths grow out of control. WW takes this opportunity to smash “Doomsday” and destroy it. The cops arrive and arrest the scientist, which ends his threat. Score: 6 out of 10.

The Random Scan of the Week!

That's right, this isn't a hoax or a bad dream, this is really THE Random Scan of the Week, ONE full day early!!! I know, this is just madness! I WAS going to introduce a new weekly feature tonight, but something came up, and before you knew it, it was well past midnight, and I wasn't planning on staying up all night doing a long post. So there ya go, that's why the RSotW is here tonight. Hopefully I'll find the time to put together a nice long post for tomorrow night, but no promises... As for tonight's scan, hows about the always weird Tim Drake and the deadly Lady Shiva?From Robin #4(April 1991).

Flashback Friday: May 14th

It's Friday, so it's time for another installment of Flashback Friday! Yeah, I still need to work on a proper intro for this feature... Oh well, one day... Anywho, I really haven't had the chance to read all THAT many back issues this past week, since I was studying for finals and stuff, but as always, I did manage to read a substantial amount of books, at least enough to make this post worth doing I'd say. Before I get started, a few quick things. First off, this link had me laughing, because it just proves what I've always known, I'm living with a goldmine!!! Who knows, in only 70 short years my massive comic collection could be worth MILLIONS!!! OK, that's enough of my deluded fantasies, on to the reviews!!!

Showcase '96 #12(Winter 1996): This comic contained three stories, one on Sarge Steel(which was painful), one which was a look at the life of Jesse Quick(which wasn't all that good), and the reason I brought this issue, a story on Vril Dox teaming up with Brainiac 5 to deal with the original Brainiac. This story was alright, but to be honest, this was one of those comics I definitely could have went without buying/reading... Score: 4 out of 10.

Wolverine Weapon X: Adamantium Men TPB(contained Wolverine Weapon X #1-5): The Wolverine portions of this trade were really top-notch, unfortunately, this trade didn't solely deal with the Ol' Canucklehead. So the positives here were the story(mainly the Wolverine portions), as well as Maverick(!!)showing up. FYI, Maverick is one of those obscure 90's Marvel characters that I tend to like so very much, so him appearing in this trade was definitely pleasing to me. As for negatives, the whole secondary story about the reporter who was trying to bring down the evil corporation Wolvie and Maverick were dealing with. If not for the annoying reporter stuff, I'd have scored this trade A LOT higher. Score: 8 out of 10.

Ray #21(Feb. 1996): I'm not even going to try to describe what happened in this comic, because I doubt I could... There was a whole slew of stuff pertaining to Black Condor that just flew WAAAY over my head... Get it? “Black Condor”, “FLEW over my head”? Ugh, yipes was that bad! Anyway, the comedy aspects of this issue were so strong that I actually wound up enjoying it in spite of the story. Score: 7 out of 10.

Ray #22(March 1996): This was another issue of the Ray with some really enjoyable comedy stuff going on, especially the scenes between Ray and his girlfriend(who was driving him insane!). Besides that, Ray finally meets up with his crazy little brother, Joshua, and Death Masque kidnaps Ray's mother(who STILL doesn't know Ray is her son)in an attempt to force a final confrontation with Ray. All in all, some really great stuff here. Score: 9 out of 10.

Ray #23(May 1996): And then the bottom fell out... This was by far the worst issue of this series yet. Let's just say that the long Death Masque storyline ended here and leave it at that, because this one was BAD! Score: 2 out of 10.

Ray #24(June 1996): For the most part this issue dealt with the aftermath of the catastrophe that was the last issue. Ray's mother now knows he's the Ray(but she still doesn't know she's his mom), and she has also decided to look after Joshua. Some weird woman from the future arrives and forces Vandal Savage to fire Ray from his computer job, and after Savage does as he was asked, she cuts his throat. Finally, Ray discovers his father alive and well, and not dead like he previously thought. Score: 4 1/2 out of 10.

Ray #25(July 1996): This comic takes place several year in the future, where we discover that Ray has become the most powerful being on the planet, both superpower-wise and money-wise. Basically old Ray is a major jerk, and his two best friends are Triumph(some guy who used to be on the JL Task Force)and the Flash(Bart Allen!!!). Ray has a girlfriend he mistreats, and that Bart is pining for. After really being a ass to the girl one day, she runs away from Ray crying, and Bart decks Ray, knocking him out cold. Bart then tries(unsuccessfully I might add)to put the moves on the girl, but even though old Ray is a horror, she refuses to break it off with him. Meanwhile, old Ray gets shot in the head by some of his enemies. Old Ray's girl and friends find him, and the girl convinces Bart to help her go to the past in an effort to prevent Ray from becoming the jerk he'd wind up being. Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Ray #26(Aug. 1996): I'm not really sure why, but this issue is STILL dealing with old Ray in the future. Old Ray is slowly dying, but before he passes, Captain Atom(who is a being of pure energy in the future)grabs the dying Ray and transports his energy into the distant future where he offers old Ray the chance to atone for his lousy life... Yeah, it was as bad as it sounds... Score: 3 out of 10.

Ray #27(Sept. 1996): This issue is the conclusion to the pretty awful future Ray storyline. Future Ray winds up doing the right thing in the future and then returns to his body to die. Trust me, the least said about this issue, the better! Score: 2 out of 10.

Ray #28(Oct. 1996): This is the last issue of the Ray series. Basically it wraps up most of the loose ends in the series. Ray's father finally tells his mother that Ray is her thought to be dead son, Ray gets a new girlfriend in the girl from the future(the girlfriend of his evil future self)and he gets to finally have a mother to son talk with his mother. All in all, this issue was a decent way to end the series, although there was SO much more that needed closure... Score: 8 1/2 out of 10.

Robin #1(Jan. 1991): This was the first Robin mini-series, NOT the Robin ongoing series. Bruce feels that Tim Drake is ready to take to the streets of Gotham with him for the first time, but Tim still feels he needs more training. In order to help Tim get ready, Bruce sends Timmy to France where he could be trained by a world renowned martial arts master. Tim trains and somehow winds up getting stuck battling an Asian street gang. Score: 8 out of 10.

Robin #2(Feb. 1991): Tim rescues a former DEA agent from the Asian street gang(which we learn is lead by King Snake). All throughout this issue, Tim is being followed and watched by Lady Shiva, who wants to face King Snake since he is supposed to be the deadliest fighter in the world. Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

Robin #3(March 1991): Shiva finally meets up with Tim and along with the ex-DEA agent, the three join forces to try to take down King Snake's gang. Unfortunately, Snake's gang manages to get a hold of a sample of the Bubonic plague from an old Nazi laboratory and escape from Tim and company, which leads to Tim, the DEA agent and Shiva hopping an airplane in the hope that they can stop the gang members from handing the plague over to Snake in Hong Kong. Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.

And that's all I've got for this week. So I finally finished up the Ray books(which ended pretty poorly, considering how good the early portion of the series was), and started the Robin series('s). I actually have A LOT of Robin comics to get through, the last two issues of the first mini-series, then two other mini-series, and then the ongoing series which ran for well over 160 issues, so expect the next several Flashback Friday's to be chock full of Robin comics. Of course I'll have a few other titles thrown in, but for the most part, prepare yourself for Robinmania! That's it for this week, thanks for reading, and Long Live The Legion!!!

A Quick Look at World's Finest #2(of 4)

Writer: Sterling Gates. Pencils: Ramon Bachs.

What Happened: The Parasite steals some Cyrogenic device from a Waynetech truck in Metropolis, which brings Robin(Damian Wayne)to town searching for him. Guardian spots Damian on a rooftop in Metropolis roughing up some z-list villain named Riot. Upon spotting Guardian, Damian drops Riot off the ledge of the building and takes off. Guardian saves the villain from a nasty fall, and winds up apprehending and arresting(HA!!!)Damian. Damian breaks free from his cuffs, KO's a few members of the science police, and makes good his escape. Guardian chases after the little menace and is met with a kick to the throat for his troubles. In the meanwhile, Parasite has brought the stolen cyro unit to Mr. Freeze with the intentions of putting Mon-El in it so Parasite could feed off of Mon-El's powers forever... You know, that's a REALLY good plan... Anyway, Guardian and Damian decide to put their differences aside and the two track the stolen cyro unit to Freeze and Parasite's underground lair. After a short battle, Freeze and Parasite wind up frozen solid, Guardian hands over the cyro unit to Damian, and Damian leaves to go back to Gotham, much to Guardian's relief. This issue ends with the Toyman sending one of his toys to spring Parasite and Freeze, while the Toyman himself is working on an enormous robot that looks half like Superman and half like Batman.

What I Thought: Damian notwithstanding, this was a pretty good comic. Have I mentioned lately that I hate Damian with a passion? Oh, I have? Well then, let's move on. I kind of wish this mini-series was going to last more then 4 parts, I really like the idea of this comic. Next issue stars Supergirl and Batgirl, which means it should be 50% better then this comic was. Why? Because Damian won't be in it!

Score: 6 1/2 out of 10.I just don't understand how anybody can possibly like Damian... I just don't get it...

Speed Review for: Blackest Night Batman #2(of 3)

Blackest Night Batman #2: Writer- Peter J. Tomasi Penciller- Aroian Syaf

What Happened: Batman's Black Lantern rogues gallery is running amok in Gotham, menacing the populace. A large group of the BL's have taken control of Gotham Police headquarters in an effort to draw Batman out. Batman(Dick Grayson), Robin(Damian Wayne)and Deadman head to the Army National Guard Armory and Dick and Damian grab some flamethrowers and head to GCPD HQ. Commissioner Gordon, along with his daughter Barbara(Oracle)Gordon are among the few cops still standing at GCPD HQ. While Gordon tries to keep himself and his daughter among the living, Dick and Damian attack the BL's who had taken control of the GCPD HQ rooftop. Deadman winds up taking possession of Babs' body and gets Babs and Gordon out of Dodge. Dick and Damian try burning the BL's on the roof, but they continue to rebuild from the damage. Red Robin(Tim Drake/Wayne)flies a Batplane into the ghouls on the rooftop, clearing a pathway for Dick and Damian. The Dynamic Duo wind up hitching a ride with Tim, and they wind up picking up Gordon and Babs before peeling out. This issue ends with the dead parents of both Tim and Dick attacking the plane, causing it to crash in a graveyard.

What I thought: There was actually a lot to like here, but there was still some stuff that bothered me. First the good. Peter did a great job with his characterizations of the Black Lanterns here. BL King Snake was awesome, and BL Blockbuster recognizing that it was his old nemesis Dick Grayson under Batman's cowl was equally great. BL Blockbuster(rightfully)blaming Dick for his death was also a sweet nod to those of us who were fans of the "Nightwing" series. As for the bad, the various heroes really didn't seem like they were trying to hide their identities at all. Deadman refers to Dick as "Grayson" within earshot of Gordon, Tim calls Dick by his first name, once again within earshot of Gordon, and the parents of Tim and Dick referred to their children by first and last name, all while Gordon was aboard the Batplane! As I type these words I have to admit that I am one sad blogger tonight... Why? My beloved New York Rangers were eliminated from the NHL playoffs earlier tonight. What do I do to cheer myself up?
