Young Justice #24 (Oct. 2000)

Let's keep the ball rolling and break out another of my favorite DC series, Young Justice! This series was one of the many reasons I tend to look at Peter David as superior to most other comic book writers currently working. Unfortunately, the issue I randomly pulled out wasn't exactly one of his better YJ works... :/

Young Justice #24:

Summary: Okay, a bit of background is in order first... Former Young Justice member Arrowette(Cissie King-Jones) is at the 2000 Olympic Games competing on the US archery team. The rest of YJ went to Australia to support her... Got it? Good. This issue begins with the star of the US archery team being injured while walking around at night. The US officials suspect Arrowette's mother was behind the injury after discovering video of Arrowette's mom talking to Merlyn(who was competing on the Zandian team), and as such ban Arrowette from competing. Arrowette's mom contests that she was only warning Merlyn not to mess with her daughter, but since there was no audio on the tape, Arrowette is out of luck. Young Justice decide to get to the bottom of the situation, which leads to Superboy(who is powerless here for reasons that escape me at the moment) confronting Merlyn and several of the Zandian national team. While the Zandians are attacking Superboy, the US Olympic committee have found a girl who was an expert in lip reading, who confirms Arrowette's mother's story after viewing the tape. With that, the Olympic committee reverses their suspension of Arrowette, while the rest of Young Justice come to Superboy's aid. In the end, the Zandians are defeated and the injured US archer from earlier(who just so happened to be wandering around the scene of the fight...) is able to point out the Zandian who actually caused her to injure her arm(some villain named Hazard). With that, the Olympics officials suspend Hazard for the rest of the competition and that about ends this one.

Thoughts: Yeah, as I said in the intro, this wasn't exactly this series finest hour... First off, I managed to pick up a back issue that occurred right in the middle of a storyline. Mistake number one. Secondly, I recall not even liking the Olympic storyline all that much... That would be mistake number two... There were TONS of issues of this series that were better than this one, but it's just my luck to pick the runt of the series... Oh well, if/when I do some more Retro-Reviews, hopefully I'll get a much better issue of this series to go through.

Score: 6 1/2 out of 10.“Get behind me”? Isn't that what Superboy usually tells Tim? ZING!!!

Look, a random scan!

Hey all, X here with some 'splaining to do... I am completely SWAMPED with homework this week(up until early next week), which is why I wasn't able to respond to any of the comments left for me yesterday. I WILL respond to those comments as soon as I'm a bit ahead of the game schoolwork-wise. With me being so backed up with my schoolwork, I wasn't able to get any reviews done either... So for today(and probably tomorrow) I'm just going to post a random scan, and leave it at that. I figure by Wednesday or Thursday things should be close to back to normal around here, but for now, we go with the scans. So that's it from me, until tomorrow, X out.CLASSIC Young Justice!!!

Nothing cheers me up like Young Justice!

As I type these words I have to admit that I am one sad blogger tonight... Why? My beloved New York Rangers were eliminated from the NHL playoffs earlier tonight. What do I do to cheer myself up? Why I go through some of my old comic books, that's what! Here are a couple of scans from "Young Justice", my favorite teen-oriented comic book ever.

A rational discussion, Young Justice style.

Just figured I'd post a picture of my all-time favorite teen team, Young Justice. In my opinion, Young Justice had THE perfect team dynamic. Only the Young Avengers come close to matching the great team chemistry Young Justice enjoyed. I can't help but laugh at Bart's utter lack of reaction to the argument occurring right in front of him!

Young Justice, Possessed! Plus, where have all the fun, teen super-hero comics gone?

Boy, I REALLY miss this comic book and these characters... Out of the original Young Justice team, only Robin and Wonder Girl are still active. That's too bad, because these characters really formed a great TEAM. Peter David did such a good job establishing the relationships between these characters and I always loved Todd Nauck's art in this series. Todd's art completely fit with the lighthearted nature of this series. That's one of the things missing from both DC and Marvel today. A well-written, lighthearted, teen oriented comic book. Everything nowadays is just one "serious" battle after another. Hell, even the original New Mutants had some downtime every now and then, and they were being led by Magneto!

Young Justice...

I was just sifting through some of my comics today organizing, or more appropriately, unsuccessfully trying to organize my books, when I came across my Young Justice collection. I really miss this series! After flipping through a few issues (which explains why I didn't get very far in organizing things!), I was filled with a sense of sadness. The team dynamic was just so good! Everybody fit together so well, which is no surprise considering one the greatest comic writers of all time, Peter David wrote it. Each character had a set role and they filled it well. No character was really there for no reason. Looking through these issues just made me realize how much I miss the characters of Bart Allen and Superboy though. I think I said enough on Bart's passing, but Superboy was a pretty well entrenched character in the DC universe and I wouldn't mind seeing him pop up somewhere again. Granted, he died the type of death that was acceptable by comic book standards (saving the universe), but I can't help but think that he should be somewhere in the DC universe, throw him with the Legion of Super-Heroes, that would add an interesting twist, much like it did when Supergirl showed up in those books. Anyway, I figured I'd just write this up in the hope that some one else discovers these great comics.
