REBELS #1

It's taken me a few months, but I've finally managed to get around to reading this series. The plan is to read the first 6 issues of this series tonight and post some quick reviews for them by tomorrow night. With me though, just because that's the plan doesn't mean that's what will happen! For the record I know NOTHING about this series. Literally nothing! Well, that's not true, I know the writer is Tony Bedard.

-We begin with some intergalactic bounty hunters chasing Brainiac 2 to Earth. Brainiac 2 escapes the hunters by outsmarting them and he manages to gain the attention of Supergirl.

-Supergirl tries to attack the hunters(against Brainiac 2's advice)and winds up getting knocked on her rear. Brainiac 2 convinces Supergirl that if they leave the scene the hunters will stop their rampage and pursue.

-Supergirl and Brainiac 2 take off and as Brainiac said, the hunters chase after them. Brainiac 2 explains that he is a member of LEGION(intergalactic space cops)and that he was instructed to show Supergirl a blank DVD while speaking a codeword to her. Brainiac speaks the word and Supergirl unconsciously uses her heat vision to burn a data file onto the disc.

-Brainiac and Supergirl head to Antarctica and Brainiac manages to construct the device that was on the disc. While constructing the device, Braniac 2 tells SG that his organization(LEGION)was usurped from him by an unknown party and that this unknown party put a bounty on his head. He continues by saying that a third party warned him to leave his base and find Supergirl and speak the codeword.

-After completing the device, Brainiac 2 is struck by a beam of energy from the device which brings him face to face with his descendant, Brainiac 5. Brainiac 5 apparently planted a post hypnotic suggestion in SG's mind while she was in the 31st century, all for the purpose of warning Brainiac 2 of some kind threat to Brainiac 2's very existence. This issue ends with the bounty hunters from earlier spying on Supergirl(who is trying to wake the unconscious Braniac 2 up)and planning their course of attack.

-Other Developments: Some aliens named the Omega Men(I think)get in trouble with Brainiac 2's robotic LEGION soldiers. They learn that Brainiac 2's living computer, Silica, has turned on him and has placed a bounty on her former leaders head...

First off, with the exception of Supergirl and Brainiac 5, I didn't know who any of these other characters were! With that said though, I enjoyed this issue. The story was fast-paced and action packed. Although I didn't know who was who, Tony made it clear who the heroes and who the villains were early on. I'd imagine that by the sixth(most current)issue, I'll have a good understanding of each character, along with what the deal is with LEGION. For a score, I'll give this comic a 7 out of 10. I'm still a bit foggy on some of the details in this series, but I'm confident that by the sixth issue I'll be totally up to speed.

Before I go, I've decided to post a random page from whatever comic I'm reviewing at the end of each post from now on. Why? I don't know, maybe the artwork or style of writing will catch your eye or something!

  1. I like your idea of adding some artwork to the end of your reviews. As they say, visuals almost always enhance everything! Actually, I think I just made that up, but oh well.

    Crisis...coming...tomorrow...:-(

  2. Cool, then that's settled. The pics are here to stay!

Well, I've steeled myself for this inevitable Crisis... You know Robert, it'd be really funny if you posted that the Crisis was much ado about nothing. I guess that's not going to be the case though...

  3. I like the added picture, had I a scanner I would most definitely do the same thing...

I liked the first issue a little better, but I am a little more familar with DC Space books set in the 20th/21st century so I was a little more nostalgic for the book.

Vril Dox is still sweet as hell!

  4. Yeah GL, the main reason I wasn't more into this comic was my lack of familiarity with many of the characters. I figure the more I read the more I'll wind up enjoying this series. And yeah, I've read a few issues last night and I have to say Dox is one of those characters I can find myself really enjoying.

By the way, are there any series you can think of off the top of your head that featured some of these characters previously?

  5. L.E.G.I.O.N.,

    Invasion!,

    I think maybe Millenium...

Definitely Adam Strange Planet Heist. This book was great all around, but the non-GLC space stuff was great to get to see after the hiatus there had been.

Rann/Thanagar War has a little Dox love, but not enough.

  6. Thanks for the info GL. I'll probably see if I can pick up a few of the LEGION books, and I'll definitely grab the Adam Strange trade. I think I actually have the Rann-Thanagar War books, but I haven't gotten around to reading them yet... I'll have to check and see if I have 'em.
