In Memoriam: REBELS #28...

I'm going to do this post differently than all of my other posts... Why? Because I've already said my piece on this wonderful series(just check out my thoughts on REBELS #27 if you don't believe me), and I know if I try to review this comic like I would any other book, I'll end up going on another extended rant against DC. No, I'm not even going to review this comic. Why should I? Whatever I say isn't going to change the fact that the best book DC is... pardon me, was putting out is gone. Instead, I'll post the score and a scan from this comic, as well as the scores and links to every single REBELS review I've done on this blog. Before I end this, a huge thank you to Tony Bedard(and Claude St. Aubin), who have provided me with 28 masterful comic books that I'll enjoy reading time and time again. That's all I can bear to say...

  1. I'm sorry this comic has ended -- I know it was one of your favorites, X. Perhaps one day, after Dan DiDio and Chairman Johns have vacated their current positions, we'll see comics like this return and thrive. On the bright side, at least it lasted 28 issues, which is a lot more than most newer Marvel series get these days (Young Allies, for example). Is there any indication that these characters may be showing up in future comics, or of what Bedard & company are up to next?

  2. I feel soo bad, and I'm not the one ending Rebels! I remember reading some of the reviews and how good they were. If I recall JT, picked up the first trade....maybe I'll give it a read and see the awesomeness you saw. :)

But like you said, you got to read 28 remarkable comics and they'll always be in your collection. :)

  3. HA! Imagine how awful I feel, Lisha! This series was the DC comic I was always most looking forward to month in and month out, so knowing there won't be a REBELS in June is a bit depressing... JT mentioned to me that he had picked up the first trade, I'll be interested in seeing what he thought. As you can see from the scores I posted, the early issues of REBELS were solid, but were mainly in the 7-7 1/2 range scorewise. It was the issues around the middle of the series that really blew me away.

Yep, I can always take solace in the fact that I can re-read those issues whenever DC does something that leaves me distressed!

  4. Aww, I feel such sorrow. :( If only DC had enough readers like you X, who doesn't go for the BS Johns is doing, I don't think the route they are going would even be happening right now.

And I used to be a down right DC fan now, I don't even know. First they screw up WW, got Superman walking across America, Grant writing Batman and Robin, now cancelling some of their greatest comics. The hell is going on!

Although the beginning had a solid score of 7, the fact that over time they got closer to 9's and 10's shows how great a series it was. And after JT reads it, I'll give it a read and let you know. ^_^

Oh, my Runaways trade came today, can't wait to start reading that too!

  5. "If only DC had enough readers like you X" I often find myself thinking the same thing, Lisha... If the world had more people thinking like me, it would be a WAY more awesome place! :D

Not two years ago I was SUPER down on Marvel and ULTRA pro-DC... Now I'm the complete opposite. MArvel righted their ship, just as DC started sinking. Sad...

Awesome about the Runaways trade! I hope you enjoy it. If you do, you have a good 30-ish issues of BKV goodness before it all goes so horribly, horribly wrong...

  6. As I said in my comment yesterday (before it was deleted!), I'm sorry to see this title go since I know it was one of your favorites, X. Perhaps in a few years, when Dan DiDio and Chairman Johns have vacated (or been kicked out) of their current positions, there'll be room for comics like REBELS at DC again. And on the bright side, the series did last for 28 issues, which is a pretty long time when you consider that Marvel cancels most of its new titles after just 5 or 6!

In the meantime, do you know if these characters will be showing up in any other comics in the near future? And do you know what Bedard & company are up to after this?

  7. Lol, the world would be a lot more awesome X. We shall rename it "Planet X" lol.

It's crazy what two years can do. I mean, man it's like all hell broke loose over at DC. Lol. And I'm beginning to slowly switch to the sides of Marvel, Image and Zenescope. Especially Zenescope with their Grimm Fairy Tales stuff. Raven Gregory is a fantastic writer.

I'm waiting for the current Spider Girl and X-23 to hit trades and I'll so be reading more Marvel. You already got me on Runaways, I still think you secretly work for the advertising at Marvel lol. How much are they paying you? *rubs chin*

"If you do, you have a good 30-ish issues of BKV goodness before it all goes so horribly, horribly wrong..." Lol, well considering I have a LOT to read now. I'll probably get through those 30-ish issues a while from now, lol. I'll savor every page. :-P

  8. I'm confident REBELS/LEGION will be back again someday. The first series ran from the late 80's to the mid 90's, so yeah, it may take a decade, but I'm pretty sure these characters will pop up again. As for Bedard, I wish he'd switch over to Marvel, because I'd LOVE to see him work with Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning on Marvel's space-faring titles.

    "Planet X"? Hmm...... I like that... I like that A LOT! :D

Lisha, I WISH Marvel was paying me! I would be more than happy to accept any and all money Marvel wanted to throw my way. I wouldn't turn it down. :P

And whenever you read that Runaways trade, let me know. I can't wait to see what you thought.

  9. Great call on Bedard doing Marvel's cosmic books...that would be pretty cool. I liked his run on Exiles too, from what I read of it, and wouldn't mind seeing him write that again since that title is in need of a revamp/reboot.

I second X's enthusiasm for Runaways, Falisha...so yeah, please do let us know when you read it! Perhaps a review once you've finished??

  10. I'd forgotten that Bedard wrote Exiles... He did a great job on that series too... And it was started by Judd Winick, two writers who are best known for their DC work. That was a great series until Claremont took it over and tanked it.
