Thor #609

Thor #609: Writer: Kieron Gillen. Art: Rich Elson, Billy Tan & Batt
Last Issue: 8 out of 10.

Review: This comic takes place directly after the fall of Asgard in Siege #3. Volstagg crawls out of the rubble while the other Asgardians try to fight off the Hood's men who were still lurking around the ruins of Asgard. Loki chooses this moment to reveal himself to the king of Asgard, Balder, but Balder refuses to believe Loki's claims that he had nothing to do with Osborn's invasion of Asgard, although he does readily admit that he isn't saddened by Asgard's fate. Balder decides to rally the few Asgardians who were left, and once he has called his forces to him, he exiles Loki from Asgard forever. This issue ends with Loki smiling and saying to himself that although exiled, he will still wind up responsible for saving Asgard and getting the last laugh at Balder.

What I Thought: This issue really didn't do much for me. Thor didn't show up, nor did Ragnarok, and Loki's parts were just kind of weird. I'm not sure why he wouldn't take credit for Osborn's attack, while claiming that he was partially responsible for what happened. That just didn't really make sense to me... Besides that, there was some back story that was being wrapped up, as well as Volstagg still bumbling around. Not exactly the ingredients to a great comic in my most humble opinion.

Score: 6 out of 10.I just figured I'd post a pic of Loki being abused...

  1. Thor didn't even show up in his own comic? That's...interesting.

Also, I got a bad image in my head when I read this line: "Loki chooses this moment to reveal himself to the king of Asgard." After I finished reading the whole sentence I got what you were saying, of course, but for a moment there I definitely thought Loki was some kind of deviant. :\

  2. HA!!! Marc, you just made my night! Blasted perverted Loki!

I was pretty disappointed by the lack of both Thor and Ragnarok in this one... I've been waiting to see the Ragnarok/Thor confrontation for MONTHS now, and I figured this would be the storyline it happens in. Now it looks like they'll have a quick one issue battle(if even that)where Thor will just drop Ragnarok with ease.

  3. Sadly, I must admit to having no idea who Ragnarok is. Thor was one of the titles I was reading when I stopped buying singles (it was probably my favorite, in fact), and I haven't caught up since then. But there's a Thor Omnibus coming out in June that'll have JMS's whole run, so I'll be catching up on that as soon as possible.

  4. Well actually, I don't even think Ragnarok has been in the Thor comics except for the Siege x-over ones. You might know him better as the clone of Thor from the Civil War story. After CW, he popped up in the HUGELY underrated Avengers Initiative comic, which is where he donned the Ragnarok name.

  5. Oh, okay...I always just called him "Clor." :)

  6. Ha, I have to say that Ragnarok has a slightly better ring to it than Clor! :-)

  7. When was it that he was in Avengers: The Initiative, anyway? That was another title I was reading before I stopped buying monthlies, and I don't remember him being in it at that point...although it's always possible that my mind's playing tricks on me.

  8. After a quick check of my reviews, it looks like he was in Initiative #21 & #22. Initiative is one of my favorite Marvel books actually. I'm really pretty upset that the next issue is that last. Dan Slott and Christos Gage really did some kind of job taking a bunch of nobody characters and giving them some real personality. To this day, I'm still hoping for a Baron Von Blitzschlag mini-series!

  9. I'm sorry, but ... I love Loki. I know he's the bad guy and all that but, I can't help it, I love him, and sometimes he just needs a goddamn hug. The other Asgardians say that the things he does are evil and maybe they are, but that doesn't excuse them for doing equally evil things to him. Two wrongs don't make a right.

  10. Now, I agree with you 100%, Napier. Loki was always the most interesting Thor character to me(except when he was a female for some unknown reason...), the rest of those Asgard are so stodgy, and the current Journey Into Mystery run with Loki has been pretty great. Not necessarily for the story, but just for Loki. I've been enjoying the current Kid Loki stuff a ton.
