Brightest Day #1

Brightest Day #1: Writers: Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi. Artists: Ivan Reis, Patrick Gleason, Ardian Syaf, Scott Clark & Joe Prado.
Last Issue: 6 1/2 out of 10.

Review: This comic begins with Hal Jordan, Carol Ferris and Sinestro arriving at the location of the white power battery. Sinestro reveals that he has proven unable to lift the power battery, so Hal gives it a shot, but he also finds that he can't move the battery. Carol figures that the battery is waiting for a special person to arrive to take it away... My guess? Why Saint Barry of course! From there we head out to sea where Deadman is still being jerked around by his White Lantern ring. Deadman arrives on a boat, where several young children were kidnapped by pirates. Deadman's ring forces him to helplessly watch the scene play out as Aquaman and Mera arrive on the boat to save the kids. Aquaman calls for help from the sea creatures under the waves, but is horrified to see a bunch of dead sea creatures pop up out of the sea and completely decimate the pirates. Needless to say, once all of the pirates have been taken care of, Aquaman is quite shaken by this experience, and Deadman is pretty surprised himself. As news of Aquaman's rebirth circulates, Black Manta, who was working at a seafood joint in Massachusetts, flips out and kills a bunch of people in the store, before leaving to find and re-kill his long-time foe. The Firestorms whine about their predicament, and upon meeting up with Professor Stein and the Atom, they learn that it appears that they are going to be stuck together... Just like a really bad 80's sitcom! The Martian Manhunter gets a strange psychic flash in which he sees himself murdering Prof. Erdel, while a woman lies dead nearby. Since the flash came from Earth, MM decides to head there to find this woman and see what was going on. Finally, Hawkman and Hawkgirl come across some guys trying to steal the skeletal remains of their original bodies. The Hawks launch an attack and seem to have things well at hand until one of the grave robbers tosses a few grenades into an airplane, forcing the Hawks to save the plane. While the Hawks are busy with the plane, the grave robber returns the corpses to Hath-Set(???).

What I Thought: Wow, I didn't like this comic either. There was absolutely no main theme/story here, it was just a bunch of random stuff that happened to a few of the recently returned heroes... Some of the stories were interesting(Aquaman and the dead fish), some made no sense(like the MM)and some were just uninteresting(the Hawks). From a creative team with the talent of Geoff and Peter, I'd expect MUCH better then this. So far the two issues of Brightest Day I've read have been terribly disappointing.

Score: 6 out of 10.All that's missing is that music from Jaws!

  1. X, we were so on the same page with this issue. I thought Brightest Day would be better than Blackest night, but sadly it's not.

The only thing I liked about this issue was the Aquaman section, it was really interesting and had me in awe.

I really hope this arc starts picking up. If not, I'll have to turn it down. Visit the comic shop find some back issues of somethings I'm interested in.

    Nice review though. :)

  2. I'm in total agreement Falisha, the Aquaman stuff was really the only part of this comic that was even worth checking out.

I was really hoping for A LOT more from this mini, and so far it's been highly disappointing... Hopefully things will really start to pick up, but I kind of doubt it...

  3. Aw we agree, X-Lisha back at it!

I just feel like those of us who read Blackest Night got screwed. They were hyping this Brightest Day stuff to the max, and like now it's just blah.

Like I'm enjoying the joy ride with Deadman, but this whole dumbness with hawkman and hawkgirl just annoys me lol. Like who cares!?

  4. Heeeeey, I gave this a 7 so I kinda enjoyed it, mainly the Aquaman/Black Manta/Firestorm stuff and I'll admit Brightest Day has been lackluster but it's only on issue two (tomorrow), we've got another year of it so get used to it guys, plus it can't be all bad, hell we got Birds of Prey from it so I'll mark it as a plus. :P

  5. Hey, let us have our hatefest in peace JT! ;-)

You liked the Firestorm stuff? Why??? :P

Well, this was pretty much the second issue if you count #0, so I figured storywise that things would finally start to jell, but apparently not. As for BoP, it never should have been canned in the first place, IMO...

  6. Lol. He's always raining on parades X.

And I totally forgot about the Firestorm stuff, see, that goes to show you it was LAME! lol.

  7. I like the hate fest because Jason...I think that's Jason has a right to be mad at Ronnie, hell his girlfriend is Salt! Lol I just like their hatred and being trapped in the same body.

And I didn't say it was the second issue, I said they were on Issue two :P Woooooooo

  8. DC just needs to give up on the Hawkman franchise. Every time they bring the Hawk characters back, all they manage to do is annoy fans of the characters and alienate readers who are (rightfully) uninterested in delving into the Hawks' convoluted backstory.

  9. Marc, Hawkman and Hawkgirl are like the ONLY two in the DCU who I could care less about finding out their origin. Lol.

I wish they would let them die off permanently lol.

  11. The reason there is no main plot is because, a bunch of great heroes just came back, I want to here about how they are reacting, there's time for what there purpose is, but right now it is just them. I gave it an 8.5/10 and that is the right choice, not perfect but pretty good.

  12. You know what's funny guys? I kind of like the Hawks! I just think DC should dumb down their origins a bit... Make it simple and stick ONLY with the reincarnation stuff, while getting away from all of the confusing Thanagarian details.

Meh, I never really read a lot of stuff with the original Firestorm JT, and the second one never reall grabbed me, so I'm just kind of lukewarm at best to the character.

  13. Me either X, hell I don't know which one is Ronnie and which is Jason...I think Jason is the black dude. Either way, I just like the fact that Jason hates Ronnie...for killing his girl, Ronnie didn't mean to but at the same time doesnt seem to regret it. Seems like if written correctly it could be brilliant.

  14. Well, I guess I can't judge them. I've never read any of their own comics or anything but it just seems so pointless to have them in anything sometimes. Lol. All they talk about is their love and being reincarnated and falling in love again, its like the same story over and over again.

    lol...laaame.

  15. It just seems like yet another one of those odd couple pairings to me JT. You know, "They're two mismatched guys stuck together!!! Let the hilarity ensue!!!" It would be like if me and the Arl got stuck together in a science experiment gone HORRIBLY wrong! Sure people from the outside might find it kind of funny at first, but after a while the novelty would wear off.

I can def hear ya Falisha. I've read a lot of comics with the Hawks in them(JSA, some of the Hawkman series)so I do kind of like them, but as you're showing DC, they need to be fixed up or something so that fans who don't know 'em that well(like you)can get into them. But then all DC wants to do nowadays is tell the same old stories over and over again anyway...

  16. Just for the record if that happened I'd find it funny for DAYS. Then it's get annoying because all of your reviews would be negative so I'd just stop coming lol but I see your point.

"Birds of Prey sucked, it had too many women!!!!" Lol

  17. Yeah if they thought about it that way I could see myself learning to like the Hawk duo but for now, they annoy me. Especially Shiera or Kendra, whatever they call her now days lol.

  18. HA!!! JT, you just gave me my literal LOL moment of the night. Thank you, that was HILARIOUS! "The only possible score for Birds of Prey #1 is a 6 1/2. Every other score is WROOOOONG!!!!!!"

Yeah, they just need to dumb down the Hawk characters. Hell, I've read TONS of stuff with Hawkman, and I STILL get confused when I think about his origin!

  19. Lol glad ya enjoyed it X. "Birds gets a 6.5 and here's three reasons why! One, Too many women. Two, Oracle isn't a Bird, duh! (Which it is) And Three because The Arl commands it!!!!"

  20. After the third statement, my head would explode and that would be the end of that!
