Annihilators: Earthfall #1

Here's a comic that may hold some promise, the first issue of the second Annihilators mini-series. I'll admit, I wasn't that fond of the first Annihilators mini, but since I like the characters and the writers of this mini, I'm more than willing to give this one a shot.

Annihilators: Earthfall #1(of 4):

Summary: We open this mini up with the Annihilators(that would be Quasar, Ronan, Gladiator, Cosmo, Ikon and Beta Ray Bill) attacking a formation of Universal Church of Truth spaceships to prevent the ships from destroying the ships of a rival UCT faction. It seems with Magus dead(again) the UCT has broken into factions and are attacking each other. The Annihilators make quick work of the UCT ships and capture the leader of that band of ships, the Matriarch. Cosmo manages to catch a glimpse of something not very good in the head of the Matriarch and tells the team to teleport to the Earth immediately. The team heads to Earth and attacks a UCT cell that was operating out of Colorado. The UCT members change to their true alien forms and attack the Annihilators on sight, but are no real match for the Annihilators. The UCT members suddenly change back into their human disguises just as the Avengers arrive on the scene, making it look as if the alien Annihilators were picking on poor, defenseless humans. There was a Rocket Raccoon and Groot back-up feature in this comic as well, but upon flipping through it and seeing Mojo, it should be no surprise that I didn't bother reading it.

Thoughts: Yeah, this wasn't that good... The story itself isn't that interesting, and the cliffhanger doesn't really make all that much sense, because it should be very easy to fix. So the Avengers arrive on the scene and see the Annihilators attacking some humans. Naturally that will lead to one of those good, old fashioned superhero misunderstandings and subsequent throwdowns. But here's the thing... Quasar WAS an Avenger. That right there should head off any trouble as Quasar sees Captain America(the Avenger he was closest with during his initial Avengers run), and says, “Hey Cap, these are actually aliens! Have Iron Man or somebody else scan the area to see that we're telling the truth!” thus taking away any potential misunderstanding/fight. But of course that won't happen. The Annihilators and the Avengers will duke it out for an issue or two, before the Avengers realize the error of their way, probably after the UCT members make some sort of nefarious move, and then the heroes will all join forces to defeat the ne'er-do-wells. Hopefully things turn out a bit more exciting than that, but with the way this issue set things up, I don't have very high hopes for this series at all...

Score: 5 out of 10.Why is Cap levitating?

  1. my biggest issue with this book was that it was supposed to be a 32 pg title and it still says that all over the web. but they took out some of the pgs for whatever reason so that now unless you like the back story (which i hate as you know) your paying 4 bucks for 20 pgs worth of reading. how would you feel if you were going to go buy a used car that was advertised as having 100k but really had 125k on it when you saw it in person? and then on top of that the owner didn't want to budge on the price. you'd go tell em to go fuck themself i hope. well that's pretty much how i feel about Marvel right now. yeah as long as their going to stick to this format i'm done with the Annihilators books. the story wasn't anything special but it was a good enough read so that i probably would have picked up #2 were i not having to pay extra money for a back story i hate. i went off on the book and on Marvel on Youtube, if your interested:

    P.S. i also hate mojo one of the dumbest villains Marvel has ever come up with.

  2. Until you pointed it out I didn't even realize the lack of pages(I didn't realize the fact that this issue was supposed to come out early Sept. either until I saw your link, shows you how much I pay attention!)... While that does annoy me, I'll stick around, if only to support this team/series. Sure, I(much like yourself) wish that we'd get a full comic devoted to the Annihilators and not Rocket Raccoon and Groot, but obviously somebody at Marvel thinks the concept of Rocket and Groot is some high-class art or something... You know, the more I think about Groot and that raccoon, the more I don't get it... Sure, it was kind of funny back when the Guardians series first launched, but now it's like beating a dead horse... It's not fucking funny anymore!!! Okay, it's a raccoon and a tree... And their friends... We get it!!! Where was I? Oh yeah, I'll keep picking this up since it's the only cosmic Marvel series left, but I'll definitely grimace a bit when I pay for it at the comic shop... At least it's only 4 issues...

    "P.S. i also hate mojo one of the dumbest villains Marvel has ever come up with." Thank you, Dave!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so...

  3. your more forgiving then i Nate Marvel is lucky to have you. the high prices of comics combined with a lesser pg count and a lack of dialogue these days has been a big part of why i don't read as many new comics as i did back back in the 80s. the only reason i endured getting screwed every month during the first Annihilators series was because it was the best and most significant ROM mythology continuity in Marvel in the last ten years. but my indulgence for Marvel has pretty much reached it's limit. mojo had come along at a time when i wasn't reading X-Men but the character seemed rather bizarre and outlandish to me from what little bit i did see of him. then i saw him in an episode of the X-Men cartoon back in the mid 90s and then i knew i hated him. i've already been reading on the net about people bitching about the Annihilators Earthfall and then swoon over the RR back story. it's so nauseating what a bunch of lame asses!

  4. What can I say, Dave, I'm an eternal optimist when it comes to Marvel... As much as I bitch about many of the things I read, there are a few diamonds in there that make it worthwhile. Granted, THIS mini-series isn't one of those diamonds, especially in light of all the information I got from you, but I'll keep picking this mini up. Like I said, at least it's only 4 issues. And who knows, maybe Marvel will finally just go with a reasonably priced ongoing after this mini... HA!! Yeah, I don't believe it either, but a guy can dream! :D

    One of the first comic books I got as a kid that I legit hated was an X-Men annual featuring Mojo. And that was before I know about all of the stupid shit surrounding Mojo like the X-Babies... And if I'm thinking of the same X-Men episode with Mojo, I'm right there with you... It was one of those times when the writers are going for funny and fail miserably...

  5. well one thing i'll certainly keep reading when it comes to the Annihilators is your reviews Nate. wouldn't miss em for the world bro. by the way thank you for leaving that comment under my most recent posting about Dan Abnett. i know ROM is a little before your time so i really appreciate you adding your voice to my initiative.

  6. Thanks for the vote of confidence, Dave. And no problem. Hell, I still think it was awesome that Abnett even responded to you! I'd be happy to see a ROM series or see ROM pop up as a supporting character somewhere because that would mean we were getting some sort of cosmic Marvel comic book!
