New Comic Day! March 30th Edition.

It's time for that weekly comic book event that we all wait for, it's time for New Comic Day! Last week I picked up A LOT of books from the comic books shop. A good 22 or so. This week was a lighter week, but still pretty good. BUT, before I get into this week, it's time to look back at the week that was and see if my predictions for last week's books came to fruition. Last week's Pick of the Litter was Captain America: Man Out of Time #5, and it was as good as I hoped, garnering a 9 1/2 from me. Hey, you can't ask for much more than that! On the other side of the coin, last week's Runt of the Litter was Batman Incorporated #4... Now while it was MILES better than issue #3, I only gave it a 5 out of 10, so yeah, it did deserve it's place as last week's Runt.

So this is where I usually start talking about what comics I picked up this week... But first, I want to look a little bit further down the road... I picked up the new Marvel Previews guide, which is for June of this year. Between classes at school I was flipping through it and I realized that I'm going to be buying A LOT of Marvel comics in the upcoming months... I mean the stuff going on over at Marvel looks really good... Now the problem about that is as follows. I'm not made entirely of money, which means if I'm going to be collecting an extra 10-15 Marvel books a month, that money is going to have to come from somewhere else. With that in mind, I am seriously thinking about dropping all but maybe 5 DC books come the summertime. I mean let's face it, DC has taken an epic nosedive since the end of Blackest Night, and the characters that people like Chairman Johns and his bitch Dan Didio want to spotlight are NOT the characters I care to read about. Now this is all subject to change, since maybe Marvel will get on my nerves as well and DC pulls itself out of the gutter, but as of now, I'm seriously considering dropping almost all of my DC books. I hope Chairman Johns and Didio are happy.

Now we can get to business. First off, here are the comics I should be getting in the mail sometime during the next two weeks. Action Comics #899, Gotham City Sirens #21, Green Arrow #10, Justice Society of America #49, Wonder Woman #609, Black Panther #516, Captain America #610, Secret Avengers #11 and Wolverine #7. A healthy 9 books there, although I'm only really looking forward to about half of them. And now, let's go over what I snagged at the comic shop today. First, I picked up two trades, Fantastic Four Vol. 3 and Iron Man: The End. Here are the singles I grabbed... Zatanna #11, X-23 #8, Ultimate X #4(!?!?!?), Teen Titans #93, Kick-Ass 2 #2(!!!), Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #8, Detective Comics #875, Avengers #11, Amazing Spider-Man: You're Hired #1, Amazing Spider-Man #657, Captain America and the Secret Avengers #1, and Cyclops #1. That gives me 12 books this week, which is about on par for a normal week for me. Before I go and name the Pick and Runt of the Litter, if I was to go on my DC dropping spree now, out of this week's books I'd probably wind up dropping Green Arrow, Justice Society of America, Wonder Woman, Emerald Warriors, and possibly Teen Titans and Gotham City Sirens. Right there that would be about $18 to spend on far superior Marvel comics. Anyway, enough DC bashing in one post. This week's Pick of the Litter will have to be... um, let's go with Ultimate X #4. I easily could have chosen Kick Ass 2 or Amazing Spider-Man, but I REALLY enjoyed the first three Ultimate X comics, and with the way that series is released, I probably won't see issue #5 until sometime in the fall. As for this week's Runt, I'm going to pick Emerald Warriors #8, only because Our Lord and Savior Hal Jordan is in it. And there you have it, another week in the books, all that's left to do is say, “X out!” and post the Random Scan of the Week. So yeah, X out!

The Random Scan of the Week! Why is Dr. Strange's creepy ghost pink?

  1. Well, in all honesty I wouldn't be mad a bit if you dropped a whole lot of DC ESPECIALLY Wonder Woman. But as always, I'm looking forward to hearing your views on Wonder Woman # 609 as well as Zatanna #11. Hell who knows, maybe I'll be picking up some Marvel too if ya reviews can convince me. :)

Well enjoy getting some comic reading done this week X. :)

  2. By listing which titles in this week's haul you would consider dropping, it sounds like you've already answered your question about where the money for more Marvel Comics will come from! Seriously, though, if you're not enjoying the DC Comics you're reading, dump the ones that aren't enjoyable and keep the few that are good. If it turns out you change your mind down the road, you can always go back and pick up the back issues from My Comic Shop.

There are several trades out there with the words "Fantastic Four Vol. 3" in them, so I was wondering which one you mean. Is it the recent one by Jonathan Hickman?

  3. Ah, I'll have to produce my best work for my Marvel reviews, Lisha. The more people I can convert to the Marvel side of things, the better.

Yeah, I was actually thinking just that Marc. I mean it's always tough for me to simply DROP a title because I''m a completionist at heart. But there comes a time when you have to say enough is enough, and I think I'm just about at that point with DC. And like you said, if I have a change of heart I can always grab the back issues from some online shop, probably cheaper than if I brought them new!

Yeah, that's the third Hickman FF volume. Unfortunately, there's no title to the Hickman FF trades... They're just vol 1, vol 2 and vol 3... Go figure!

  4. Lol, you better do some good convincing sir. ^_^ But since we're on the subject, any good Marvel trades you can recommend?

  5. HA! I'll have my dancing shoes on, Lisha! As for a recommendation... Maybe Runaways? You could probably get the first trade in digest form really cheap. That was a series that wasn't really connected to the greater Marvel Universe that much so it might be easy to get into. Besides that, maybe Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That was one of the better storylines in all of comicdom. That's all I can think of off the top of my head though. I'll look through my trades tomorrow to see if anything catches my eye for a newish Marvel fan.

  6. Dancing shoes? I'd pay to see that!! And you know, I think I saw the Runaways trade you're talking about at the borders store that was closing so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's still there if I go this weekend.

And thanks for taking a look at some trades. Although I have loads to read now, it wouldn't hurt to add to the collection, lol. JT is going to give me all his Invincible trades, lol. Truth be told I need to hurry up and finish reading Y. lol.

  7. The Runaways I'm talking about was written by Brian K. Vaughan, who happens to be the same guy who wrote Y. There have been a few Runaways series, so definitely make sure you get the stuff written by Vaughan, because the stuff written by the other writers was pure crap!

No problem! I'm about to start my homework, so I won't be able to get back to ya tonight, but I'll def see what I can find come tomorrow. Invincible is also a great series. Hopefully you'll enjoy that too!

  8. Aww thanks X, you're the best. I went to the comic shop with JT today to pick up some stuff we ordered, well, mine won't be in til next week BUT anyways, I saw some of the Vaughan Runaways stuff and will definitely pick something up once I get some of all these trades out the way. Lol.

But thanks for checking into your Marvelous World of X's comics to recommend some stuff for me. I'm always looking to read some new, Marvel stuff as well as add to the collection. I'm seriously going to need a second book shelf soon. Lol. And as far as Invincible, I'll be starting that once I get done with Y, which at this point is just incredible. Thanks again sir!

  9. That sucks! I'd hate to walk into the comic shop, happily expecting some books and find out I had to wait! That riot of mine would be back on again!

Before I start just listing all sorts of weird comics, is there any group/character you're interested in reading more about? Or do you want to read things that are less connected to the mainstream Marvel U? Or a particular writer/artist? That would probably help me narrow things down a bit! :P

  10. Man, it like ruined my whole little Comic shop high. I'm waiting to start Vol 3 of Girls when I get Vol. 4 so I can just finish everything up and be happy. But nooo I can't! And then I was REALLY looking forward to getting "Salem's Daughter" But, I think it got pushed back so, my feelings were a little hurt. Lol. Maybe you should come riot over at my comic shop.

And as for the comic recommendations, since I'm a newb to Marvel I think some stuff that's a bit away from the mainstream Marvel Universe stories would be great. I just really want to get a good intro to characters and learn who they are such as Avengers, X-Men, just to name a few.

Oh, and I miss you, think we can get the Trio together Monday night?

  11. If you want me to head out west and start up a world class riot, I would do it. I'm not sure we'd accomplish much, but what the hey, it might be worth the night in jail I'd be sure to get! :D

Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha. Now I have a bit of an idea of what you're looking for so I'll start putting up a few synopsisiisisisisis(I can never spell that word right...)as to what each issue is about, gauge your interest level, and then move on.

Hmm... I gotta say, it's not looking likely. I have two papers due ON Monday, as well as a lab. That means I'll be in the library at the school until like 5 o'clock to finish that lab and get it to my professor before he heads home for the day. After that I have a 15 minute Powerpoint presentation due on Wednesday... A presentation I have YET to start working on... So yeah. X bad. X lazy. X only wants to read comics and play DA2. :/

  12. Lol. Sounds like a sweet plan to me. I'll join in, seems like it'd be a cool road trip.

I hope I didn't confuse you with the "description" I gave of what I was looking for on the Marvel side of reading. Thanks again. You're the best.

And I believe I just got turned down for a date! Lol, way to go X! Lol. JK, totally understandable. Hope you don't over work your self. Maybe next time we can get the trinity together. :)

  13. It would be! Well until the cops in the riot gear come by... But before that it'll be a blast!

Nope, I got ya. I'm in my living room now(supposed to be doing schoolwork...), so I'm not near my comics, but later on I'll see what I can find.
