Vengeance #1

I only have one reviewable comic left to take care of until Wednesday, which explains why this particular comic is getting the single review treatment. Um, that's about all of an introduction I have... Enjoy the show?

Vengeance #1(of 6):

Summary: God is this going to be a shambolic review... We get started with some guy dancing with Stacy X and some c-list celebrity at a club. Stacy X is basically a mutant hooker with the heart of gold... Yes, really! Anyway, the pseudo-celeb and Stacy take the guy up to a private room for some freaky snake-mutant sexual shenanigans... Yes, really!! Before things can go too far, Magneto busts into the room and declares an end to the sexual shenanigans! It seems that Mags has decided that with so few mutants left, he wasn't going to allow mutants like Stacy X to degrade themselves... But it was okay when mutants were plentiful?! The guy doesn't exactly appreciate Mags screwing up his freaky snake-mutant action, and draws a gun on Mags. Mags prepares to laugh that off, being the Master of Magnetism(and Sensibilities), but the gun fires a blast as opposed to bullets, with the blast hitting Mags square in the chest. The blast robs Mags of his powers, at which time the guy introduces himself as the Ultimate Nullifier(which is actually a cool name for a character, all things considered). Stacy X and the pseudo-celeb decide to exit stage right, and Mags decides to try to beat the Nullifier up. Considering the Nullifier is presumably in his late teens, and Mags is like 90, that fight goes exactly how you'd expect it to. Figuring he was done for, Mags tells the Nullifier to make his death quick, at which time the Nullifier reveals that Mags power loss was only temporary. Mags powers return, and he decides to leave, but not before warning the Nullifier that if they were to meet again, things would be different. From there, the Nullifier pulls out his phone and texts that he'd be returning to base. As for base, it consists of Beak and Angel(?!?!!!?), as well as some woman called Miss America. Beak and Angel are the techies behind the group(which was calling itself the Teen Brigade for some unfathomable reason), with Miss America actually doing stuff, since she had powers, unlike Beak and Angel. Miss America winds up finding an abandoned military installation with only one individual held captive there, what appears to be a younger version of the In-Betweener. Miss America takes the possible cosmic entity out of the base while the (maybe)In-Betweener babbles about stuff. Oh, and then weird creatures descend from the heavens to attack Miss America or something. Adolf Hitler, Nighthawk, Fin Fang Foom(or a random dragon, I don't know...), the Red Skull, some goons in masks and an old guy also make random appearances here as well.

Thoughts: Well, this was definitely something... I'm not sure what I was expecting with this comic, but what I got most definitely wasn't it... I mean, I hear about a mini-series written by Joe Casey is coming out, with some sweet cover art featuring Magneto, and I figure, “Yeah, I'll spend $4 to check that out!” After reading this though, I can't help but think my $4 could have been better spent... This issue was just ALLLLL over the place! I literally have NO idea what was going on, besides the fact that some guy in his underwear beat up Mags, and Beak and Angel(probably my LEAST favorite characters from Grant Morrison's New X-Men run) where here. Something about the Teen Brigade? And Kristoff? And a random Hitler cameo?! WEIRD!!! Okay, here's the thing. Since I've already picked up the first issue of this mini, I figure I might as well pick up the second issue if only to see if it starts making some sense! Maybe Casey just needed an issue to introduce some new characters/ideas and stuff, and everything will be smooth sailing from here... I mean, it COULD happen, right?

Score: 4 out of 10.Wait a minute... Didn't Stacy X lose her pheromone powers after M-Day?!

  1. heh, the worst thing about Beak & his fly girl is that they still live while likeable characters like Chris Bradley Maggot Synch & Skin get the shaft... Anyway Angel 's fate is to meet a big can of Raid & Beak to be turned into Nuggets by Stryfe, Why ? Because Fuck them ,that's why!

& yes, Magneto in the x-men makes no sense since fatal attractions, Ive seen your take on this subject & I can't agree more

  2. "the worst thing about Beak & his fly girl is that they still live while likable characters like Chris Bradley Maggot Synch & Skin get the shaft" I think that's my problem with them exactly. They're just not very likable... Like at all! If you were to look at them and the kids from New X-Men: Academy X, the kids in Academy X were WAY more likable, and easier to get behind. That was one of the problems with Morrison's New X run... I can't think of a single good student I liked. I liked Quintin Quire, but that was because he was a good villain, not a good guy. The rest of them? Yeah, no.

  3. This sounded awesome during the press releases on cbr. It looked pretty good at the comcishop. I Hated it. I felt that they were trying to incorporate way too many long gone characters, and not to mention Magneto was way out of character in my opinion. Maybe he wasn't really out of character, I think it was more that Joe casey just couldn't find a voice for him in this. The premise actually sounds interesting but the first issue was just all over the place. Though at 6 issues something could start making sense soon.I think I'm dropping this entirely (after I skim through issue 2 in the shop haha) loved the cover, but that was about it... What ive gathered from press releases and the first issue is that a young masters of evil is being reformed and are wanting to learn from the old vets how its done. But at the same time they may be attempting to over throw them? idk. I could easily get into a young/old school villain throwdown, but that it doubtful at this point. Anyway looking foward to next weeks batch of reviews as i stated earlier that ive got a big day with lotsa books coming in the store. take it easy!

  4. It sounds like we saw this one the exact same way, Cap. It looked interesting in the shop, and that cover is all kinds of awesome, but I just couldn't get into the story. At all! Mags as the conscience of Mutantkind was just weird to me... I mean, since when does he go around and scold characters for not acting properly? Plus the fact that he simply left after what the Nullifier did to him was just odd, especially for Mags. He was basically humiliated and simply left? But yeah, I'll def be snagging the next issue, with the hope being that it'll start to make sense now that the initial stuff is out of the way. I've got to ask, what are you getting from the shop on Wednesday? I haven't even checked the new releases yet, so I have NO idea what I'll be getting, although I'm confident it's an obscene number of books... As usual!

  5. I am glad that i am not the only one that thought magneto was just not himself in this series so far... And humiliation? Magneto? NEVER would he stand for that. Magneto has never been one to shy away from a battle. Even after numerous defeats, sometimes against much stonger foes, he would not back down. I mean there is NO WAY magneto would have walked away from that fight unless he is planning something super serious and brutal!
-As for wednesday I will say that i don't pick up as nearly as much as you on a usual day so when i say big it could be miniscule compared to yours.
-I will be picking up Dark knight #3 by david finch because i love his art and I am liking the supernatural telling of this story. However, it is ALSO being rebooted after 3 single issues! ridiculous. Anyway... Flashpoint citizen cold #2 ( i know your hate for johns and his stories, and while i'll admit flashpoint has been slow and not very engaging the tie-ins are a great read because they are basically all like what if?/elseworlds tales. The batman tie-in has been phenominal thus far in my opinion. The finale to the war of the green lanterns (green lantern 67), Amazig spiderman 665 (to excite/enlighten me on spider-island), CAPTAIN AMERICA #1!!!, Iron Age #2 (I can't believe each issue is 5 bucks), new mutants 27, fear itself: spiderman #3 and x-men schism #1.
-Black panther 521,and new avengers 14 may be skim and buys haha dude to the fear itself banner. So basically nine books, possibly 11. I'm psyched

  6. please gentlemen! I've been enduring the mistreatment & Jobbing of Sinister , Gambit & Apocalypse quite a long time now! guess it's Mags turn to job NOW! hahaha! take that Erik, that's for that horrible house of M mini & planet x & this next slap is for first class! boy do you & Chuck need to retire! MEH!it was a stereotype punk & only kind of youngster Morrison knows to write! Besides the only time i liked the stepford cuckoos is in XML II where Holocaust use them as lunch, otherwise, they're nothing but piece of cum dumpster jailbaits that I find quite insulting to the real Emma Frost!

  8. Yeah, the fact that Mags simply left with his tail tucked between his legs was just wrong, Cap. It just seemed weird to me. He was like, "Well, you may have humiliated me, but I have other things to deal with, good-bye!" That was just odd. Out of your list, I'll be snagging 8 of those books(everything except Flashpoint, GL & FI: Spidey). I'll probably check out the the list of releases for this week later on tonight, but with 8 books already on my list, it looks like another 14+ book week ahead for me! And yeah, I don't get why they'd reboot Dark Knight already... I mean the current storyline can't possibly be finished by this issue, so why not just leave it alone? With the way this series comes out, the forth issue will probably be out around the same time the rebooted books will be at their forth issues, so it would all work out!

Hmm, you know, Saidi, I'd forgotten all about the Stepford Cuckoos role in XML II... THAT was probably the best comic based video game I've ever played, even better than Arkham Asylum. Maybe I'll bust out the PSP version so I can play as Nate one more time...

Wow, those Bat solicits all sound pretty bad, Movieartman! I mean where are the Jokers, Scarecrows or Ra's Al Ghuls of the world? How do you reboot the Bat-titles and NOT have Joker in one of the Bat-books?! I can't say there's anything there that has me excited...

  9. the joker was on the cover of the first issue of detective comics and im thinking there gonna save the first big joker story for the revamped universe for later on after they build up to it a bit

  10. I could see saving the Joker story for down the road, but that seems kind of risky to me... I mean if you're DC, you're probably going to get more people picking up your comics in September than usual, people love buying #1 issues of stuff. With that said, they should be pulling out ALL of their big guns right off the bat! Joker in Bats, Lex Luthor in Supes, maybe even Darkseid doing something somewhere... I mean issue #1 is easy, people are going to buy those comics, what they need is to keep people sticking around for issues 2, 3, 4, etc. Putting out a bunch of Batman titles, none of which are written by a big name writer(like a Grant Morrison), featuring little known to unknown villains seems like a HUGE misstep to me... But then again, who knows. Maybe holding off on the Joker appearance will keep people coming back for more until he does show up! I doubt it, but you never know.

  11. Well then stepford Cuckoos role in XML II was as I stated: to be consumed by that wonderful genocidal bastard Holocaust!
Btw , still haven't found a theme song for Nate? I didn't either..
Even though I don't find the shaman phase that different,it was the same guy who basically found an ideology of his own & while calmer in appearance, he was friggin MURDEROUS when pissed off!
that's what I loved with x-man & what made him stand out as one of my favourite anti-heroes in x-men (others are Deadpool, Emma frost, Gambit , Wolverine....), he's a neutral/ chaotic good person & works outside the system & you can't really know what his next move will be...Bring the hardcore Nate back, & Douchelops & Paris Hilton will be smitherins!
