Let's Talk About: Teams in the DCU.

Hey yo X-Maniacs, it's your beloved blog master X here with a special little bonus post. See, back in the day(you know, like five whole months ago!)I used to do these “Let's Talk About...” posts where I, you guessed it, talked about comic related stuff! Man am I creative or what?! Anywho, school, life and blog-related duties got in the way(as they often do), which led me to forget all about those “Let's Talk About...” posts. That is until DemonHunterCole reminded me about the forgotten “Let's Talk About...” posts, AND gave me a topic for one of the posts! So with the hard part out of the way(actually thinking up a post subject), I promised that I'd get a “Let's Talk About...” up and posted once I have some time. Well guess what, I finally have some time!

Which brings us to today and this post. I don't think there is ANYBODY out there who is pleased by the current incarnation of the Justice League, DC's #1 super-team. I mean, Congorilla is on the team!!! So, what would be my ideal DC teams? And why would I put said characters on said teams? Before we start, a few ground rules. I'm going to try to keep the teams to sensible numbers, so don't expect to see teams in excess of seven characters. Also, no doubles! Sorry, but Superman can't be on EVERY team! As always with these “Let's Talk About...” posts, feel free to voice your opinions in the comments section below.

Let's start off with DC's premier team, the Justice League of America.
Leader: Batman(Bruce Wayne): Um, he's Batman, how could he NOT be on this team?
Superman: See above, and simply replace “Batman” with “Superman”.
Wonder Woman: You've GOT to have DC's Trinity on the JLA.
Flash(Wally West): I like Wally and the humor he brings to a team, so he's in.
Green Lantern(Kyle Rayner): I like the banter between Wally and Kyle, so Kyle gets the nod here.
Green Arrow(Oliver Queen): If nothing else, Ollie brings some headaches to any team he's on.
Gypsy: Why not? Give Kyle a love interest on the team.

Next up is the Justice Society of America.
Leader: Green Lantern(Alan Scott): You NEED Alan if you're doing a JSA team.
Flash(Jay Garrick): See above.
Wildcat(Ted Grant): Once again, see above.
Green Arrow(Connor Hawke): As a legacy hero, he fits the bill here.
Liberty Belle: I like Jesse. I just do. *shrugs*
Mr. Terrific: I like Terrific. If Alan was to become incapacitated, Terrific could fill in as leader.
Dr. Midnite: He's another character who deserves better than he's currently getting.

Birds of Prey.
Leader: Oracle: Duh!
Black Canary: Needless to say, Dinah would be serving as the field leader.
Huntress: Damn skippy Huntress is on the team! If I could, she'd be on half the teams I'm putting together!
Catwoman: Yeah, cats and birds don't get along, but Huntress and Catwoman on the same team? Yes please!
Lady Blackhawk: I don't really like her, but I'll keep her around for transportation purposes.
Batgirl(Cassandra Cain): Come on, she deserves to be SOMEWHERE!
Jade: She's another character I just wanted to put somewhere.

Outsiders.
Leader: Geo-Force: After DC Universe: Last Will and Testament, I've got a soft spot for Prince Brion.
Looker: She is SO underutilized it's nearly criminal!
Katana: One of the only good things to come out of Blackest Night was the added depth to Katana's character.
Black Lightning: Yet another criminally underutilized character.
Captain Marvel(Freddy Freeman): Not Billy Batson. I can't stand him. I'm probably the only one, but I'd MUCH rather see Freddy get a push here.
Hawkman: So long as he stays away from Hawkworld, I'm fine with him.
Hawkgirl: Not the current incarnation, the pre-Blackest Night Hawkgirl.

Titans.
Leader: Nightwing(Dick Grayson): Total no-brainer.
Donna Troy: Once again, a no-brainer.
Arsenal: DEFINITELY the pre-Cry For Justice version!!!
Tempest: He rounds out the original Teen Titans(except for Wally).
Damage: He seems like a really good fit for this team.
Ray: Same as Damage, he just seems to fit here.
Starfire: She can be the team whore! :P

Teen Titans.
Leader: Red Robin: I needs me my Timmy running this team!
Superboy: If Tim is here, you KNOW Superboy would be on the team too!
Kid Flash(Bart Allen): I'd be tempted to go with Bart as Impulse, but I'll stick with the Kid Flash version.
Wonder Girl(Cassandra Sandsmark): Why not? She fits well with the prior three team members I mentioned.
Spoiler(Stephanie Brown): Since I gave Cassandra Cain the Batgirl title back, Steph gets to be Spoiler again.
Ravager(Rose Wilson): She'd be here simply to stir the pot.
Supergirl: I wanted to put her somewhere, and she probably fits best on this team.

Young Justice.
Leader: Robin(Damian Wayne): Yes, the little hellspawn itself. If nothing else, he'll keep this team on their toes.
Static: I wanted to put him somewhere, and with him being relatively new, he fits here well.
Speedy(Mia Dearden): Yet another character with tons of potential being squandered.
Abuse: You know, that kid from the Zsasz story in Streets of Gotham. He seemed to get along well with Damian, so he fits well here.
Osiris: He'd make a good addition as the resident powerhouse.
Aquagirl: Well, I needed at least two girls on the team, so she's it!
Tomcat(Tomas Bronson): Who? Wildcat's son from the JSA.

Secret Six.
Leader: Deathstroke the Terminator: Slade can run my team of tweeners.
Red Hood(Jason Todd): He should be with Slade in the current Titans series!
Deadshot: Watching him interact with Deathstroke would be worth the price of the comic.
Catman: Where Deadshot goes, Catman follows...
Cheshire: She fits REALLY well on a team with both Slade and Catman.
Knockout: I need a powerhouse here, and she fits the bill.

So there you have it, the teams I would put together if I was running DC comics. Right away you'll notice that I left off several DC mainstays(Hal Jordan, SAINT Barry Allen, Beast Boy, Raven, Billy Batson, to name a few), mainly because I either hate those characters, or I'm sick of seeing them. So now that you've seen my lists, how's about you post your own ideal DC teams. I'm sure you guys have your own ideas as to what the ideal DC Universe would look like, so please, feel free to fire me a couple of comments telling me who you'd put on each of your teams. That's going to do it for me, until next time, X out.

That's the best damn team I've ever seen put together. Ever. Give them an amazing writer like Judd or Bryan Miller or bring over Brubaker and make that the best comic in stores.

  2. "That's the best damn team I've ever seen put together. Ever." Thanks mi amigo! And that's the last team I put together, too! But yeah, there'd be a really good dynamic here, plus it has Jason Todd, so it would be all good. I think my two favs were this one and the Teen Titans. I'd read those books in a heartbeat!

  3. Hey X,

This is awesome. There's so much I WANT to reply to right now, but not enough time. So instead I'm just going to take it a team or two at a time for the next few nights. Also, when I drafted my teams over a week ago, I came to a limit of 9 per team, so my teams are slightly larger, but I figured that it allowed for members to go missing due to storylines in other series.

    Teen Titans:
    I agree with:
Red Robin, Superboy, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash and Ravenger.
    I added:
Speedy (Mia Dearden): Like you said, she has serious potential and I really enjoyed her for those few issues she was in back the 1 year jump.
Kid/Red Devil: I think he's a great character that was horribly miswriten before his death, AND he works great with Ravenger.
Static: When Teen Titans was starting up years ago, I wanted Static on the team then. I then red how he had red tape on him and wasn't allowed to be used. I was SOOOO thrilled when they announced that the tape was off and that he'd be joining the Titans. He has great potential and I think he'd work great with Tim, Conner and Cassie.
Aquagirl: I think that the Aqua family has been seriously under used this last ten years, and it started with the mysterious switch of the original Aquaman. Plus, I think she'll do to Static what Eddie does to Rose.

    Young Justice:
The only one I agree with you on is Robin (Damien Todd, err, Wayne), and the fact that I moved 3 of yours to the Teen Titans left this team very....empty. My YJ is:
Impulse (Iris West): I'm very surprised you didn't think of her yourself, but maybe you missed her arrival at the end of the last Flash: The Rebirth(?).
Miss Martian: I needed someone to keep Damien in line, and she's the best option.
Aqualad: Whether we like it or not, he's on the new TV show, and I think he could have serious potential considering how he's father is evil. The good news is that he'll create conflict with Damien.
Misfit: I figured that Damien was already here, so why not throw in another character that you didn't like. That and I think she has potential and is the closest thing to a sidekick that the Huntress has ever had.
Proxy: She's Oracle's new sickkick, and I figured if one BoP sickkick is here, why not have the other!

    Reasons for Rejection:
Tomcat: I have him on the JSA All Stars.
Supergirl: I felt that having two Supers on one team was too much, and I already have her on another team.
Spoiler (Stephanie): I actually left her as Batgirl and have her on another team. As a side note, I think that Cassandra Cain is going to be taking a new, unique costume soon and I can't wait.
Abuse & Orisis: I honestly have never heard of Abuse until now. I have no objection to either of them being on the team as I didn't have this team filled.

What the heck, I'll add one more team into this comment.

    Birds of Prey
I agree with Oracle, Huntress, Black Canary, Lady Blackhawk & I have no (immediate) objection to Catwoman. I added:
Hawkgirl (pre-Blackest Night version): She seems like a really good fit.
Cassandra Cain: Like I said above, I think she'll have a new identidy, and I think it will free her from the restrictions that her Batgirl one held her to, just like how Tim becoming Red Robin was a coming of age rite. I could name at least 20 different characters that we know and love who have done this.

I reject Jade because I have her in another team, that being the Outsiders. More info on that later.

Okay everyone, I really want to hear what you think of these teams. X will reply to my posts, but JT never really talks to me (is this because I don't visit your site?). I challenge you (in a friendly way)!

Wow, that was an hour. L8r days!

  4. Heh x man do you know a guy named Jeff chef?

  5. "So instead I'm just going to take it a team or two at a time for the next few nights" Sounds good to me Cole. I have an hour between classes, so I might respond more later, but for now, here are some initial thoughts.

I totally forgot about Kid Devil... I wouldn't mind seeing him on the Teen Titans, I'd actually probably replace him with Supergirl, who is only there because I couldn't fit her anywhere else!

I have to say, I really wasn't too fond of your Young Justice team... :P Just sayin'... I don't like the idea of Wally's daughter being Impulse. There's only one Impulse for me, and it ain't her! I hate Misfit with a passion, so you KNOW she wasn't making any of my teams! Aqualad's still kind of new(plus I'm a bit bitter that the original Aqualad is still dead...), and I haven't been overly fond of Brightest Day, so there's that. I don't mind Miss Martian, so I guess I don't mind her here, and Proxy? I'd probably have stuck her with the Birds.

We seemed TOTALLY on the same page with the BoP, but I'd still rather Hawkgirl on a team with Hawkman for that whole unrequited love thing. Plus I'd probably put her in a relationship with Captain Marvel to mess with Hawkman on the Outsiders.

You know I'll be looking forward to the rest of those teams later on!

No, I can't say that I do, Benjamin.

  6. Hey X,

"I have to say, I really wasn't too fond of your Young Justice team... Going into this, I knew that our YJ teams would be completely opposite, and that you would probably hate my team. I understand how there's only one Impulse for you, as I thought the same about Robin when Damien replaced Tim. But Bart's moved on from being Impulse (by his own choice, unlike Tim) and I think that Iris could be a good fit. I'll sell this to you with this. With Iris on the team, not only do you have the Flash family being represented, you have a reason to see Wally or Bart pop in every once and a while....just saying! :P

You know when Damien first appeared and you HATED HIM WITH A PASSION. Didn't it just take someone with great writing skills to write him...more appropriately? I think the same happened with Misfit. She has sooooooo much potential but it wasn't properly written. I've tended to not always look at what words the writers are having them say, but the character's reasoning behind their actions. I think that's the only way I survived reading New Avengers under BENDIS.

Would you feel better about Aqualad if I told you that I have Tempest (the original Aqualad) on my Titans team? :D

And I almost stuck Proxy with BoP, but I realized she's exactly like Oracle, so there wouldn't be a point. The only way for the character to develope would be for her to be on her own, and I figured it would either be YJ or my (almost all female) Outsider team, but she seemed too young for that team.

Now where is JT, Lisha, and Kello with their comments?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Alright, let's do this. Secret Six was phenomenal, I won't touch em because that team is perfect. Same with JLA except I'd probably take Gypsy off and replace her with Booster Gold, he deserves to run with the big dogs.

For Birds I'd have Cass stay but not as Batgirl, give her a new name. I'd take Jade off and replace her with Power Girl. (Who I'm shocked you left out.) The Birds need a Heavy hitter, plus throw in the fact that Canary and Peej have that JSA experience, she and Huntress have history, and she has a rocky past with Oracle and it just works.

Your Outsiders team is fine with me, as is your Titans team, especially with the inclusion of Damage. Although I may swap out Starfire and throw in Supergirl for them since she and both Grayson and Freeman have a nice little bond with her. The Teen Titans team I'd keep the same except Steph would be Batgirl and I'd give Supergirl's spot to Static since he and Ravager haven't teamed up since the Dark Side Club. And for Young Justice, I REALLY like that you included Abuse, that was a great pick, so I'd give the spot that Static had to someone like Kid Devil and make him the senior member of the group.

  8. I hear you about the Impulse thing, Cole. But I just still have this resentment about anything Flash right now. Hell, if I had my way, Bart would STILL be Impulse! I mean that character was just SO unique! That's why I just can't see any other character take up that name. I will say that I like the idea of Wally popping up every now and then though...

See, with Misfit, I don't think it matters who writes her. She just seems like a character I could never get behind. I need some sort of emotional connection to a character, and there are just some characters I can't ever seem to be emotionally invested in. The Damian thing taught me to never say never, but idk, she was the bane of my existence when she was in Birds.

Huh, how did I miss Booster, JT? Weird... The only probalem with doing that would be the fact that we'd only have ONE woman on the JLA(WW)and she's probably not gonna strike up a relationship with anybody on that team.

Even more embarrassing than leaving Booster out though is leaving PG out!!! And she would fit PERFECTLY with the Birds! Nice choice.

SG works on the Titans because she could probably start up a relationship with CM, which I'd like. And yeah, Abuse on YJ was a no-brainer to me. Especially considering Damian was on the team, and Abuse was like the ONLY person Damian treated okay(-ish).

    ReplyDelete
  9. Depends on which WW, if it's WW classic then I see ya point,. If it's "young, I wear long black jeans" WW I could see her starting up a little friendship/relationship with Booster.

See, if ya read Gen Lost and PG Like I suggested, you wouldn't have forgotten those two awesome characters :P

Yeah, I also like the Cap Marvel/Supergirl thing. They just work well together. Thinking back, I really wish I had somewhere to put Black Adam, I would switch him for Knockout but I really like her.

    ReplyDelete
  10. WW and Booster Gold!!! NO! I mean I love Booster and all, but WW is SO far out of his league! I'd have her with Kyle or Bats or something, but Booster? Woof, I could never see that!

Jeez JT, I've already promised you a full BotR Gen Lost post one of these days, what more do you want from me?! As for PG... If she's still around after Brightest Day ends, I'll probably pick that series up. But for now(at least until after X-Mas)I probably can't afford adding TOO many more books to my pull list.

Yeah, maybe Black Adam could be stuck in the JSA somehow? He was there once before.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sure X, let's throw her with the guy who's Girlfriends all die and is currently dating Sinestro's daughter! Or, let's have her ruin the finally getting together Batman and Catwoman! Next you'll try to have her date Clark :P

Lol @ If she's still around. Where's she gonna go X? :P And yeah, I just want it all don't I? I'm such a jerk.

Yeah, but he seems better as a bad ass, not a forced goody goody.

    ReplyDelete
  12. "Sure X, let's throw her with the guy who's Girlfriends all die" HA!!!!!! Damn... Poor Kyle! Well, that's probably why she'd be good for him. It would take a hell of a lot to kill her too!

I meant no disrespect sir...I simply misspoke. I'm sure PG will be around for a long, LONG time, and her comic book will reach issue #300 with no problem. :P

Totally agreed. My fav Black Adam moment will always be him tearing that poor sap in half in front of his embassy during 52. Bad ass Black Adam is WAY > good Black Adam.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Lol well that IS a good point X. It would be hard tyo kill her... plus she IS kinda a Star Sapphire. :P

Haha, that better be what you meant! So X, I was thinking. Pick two writers for each, who do you think should write Superman and Wonder Woman now that JMS's reign of Terror has ended?

That was great. I loved his super angry destroying of everyone. Oh man.... imagine Black Adam vs. Superboy Prime! Lol, that'd be great.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yep, that's exactly what Kyle needs. A woman who's practucally invincible, and therefore CAN'T get stuffed in a refrigerator, killed by a Superman robot or destroyed in deep space. I am now officially all for a Kyle/WW relationship.

Hmm, good question... For Supes I'd go with... um, why not Paul Cornell? He's done some interesting stuff with Lex, let's see what he can do with Supes. As for WW, Fabian. I think he could do some decent stuff with good ol' WW. What about you, JT? Any ideas?

Yeah, Crazy Black Adam is GOOD Black Adam!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yeah well when ya put it like that... Major Force WOULD get his ass kicked from here to hell by Wondy.

See... I hated Cornell's first issue of Batman and Robin which I read today while loitering, but I like his Lex run so I'm conflicted. For Supes... I'd try to get Brubaker to jump ship but I'd settle for Bryan Q. Miller because I trust him and he's written for Clark on Smallville anyway. As for Wondy, I'd say Fabian is a good choice.

Exactamundo! Black Adam... that dude is such a great character. I still say let The Rock play him.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah, WW would stuff Major Force's ass in that refrigerator! :D

Hmm, that's not good... I still haven't gotten my issue of B&R because DC's subscription service sucks. I'll probably get it sometime next week, but now I'm kind of dreading it. Thanks JT! :P I didn't take anybody working exclusively for Marvel, which is why I didn't take Brubaker. Hell, if it was up to me, Brubaker would write BOTH books! :D Miller on Supes would be SO interesting in that I've only ever read him writing Steph, so I'd be interested to see what he could do with a well established power-house like Supes.

"Can you SMELLLLL what Black Adam... Is cooking?"

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lmao... "Pass me the Major Force... behind the milk."

Yeah, if I didn't know he'd written a few Smallville episodes I'd have had a toucher time, but the episodes he wrote I actually really liked and that was before I found out he wrote them, so I'd trust him with Big Blue.

FINALLY.... Teth-Adam, HAS come back.... to Kandaq!

    ReplyDelete
  18. HA! The question would be this, why the hell would they KEEP Major Force in the fridge?!

Ahh, cool then. Was it more recent or earlier on in the series?

"FINALLY.... Teth-Adam, HAS come back.... to Kandaq!" Best line EVER!!! See, if Rock was to play Black Adam, he'd HAVE TO work that into the movie! AND for that line alone, I'd go to see that movie. Repeatedly!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Tell me you don't wanna add some Major Force to your everyday meal. Lmao... yeah.

More recent, like within the last two seasons. When I watched it last night I saw that he's the Supervising Story Editor or something to that nature.

Lol, I agree, that'd make that movie even better. But I doubt you'd ever see it :P Go see Under the Red Hood already! :P

    ReplyDelete
  20. "Tell me you don't wanna add some Major Force to your everyday meal." ......... I... don't even know HOW to respond to that... I'll just give it one of these :/ and move on.

    ReplyDelete
  21. See, that left me so stunned, I forgot to comment to the rest of words! Huh, so he sounds like a real bigwig then... I wonder why it took him so long before he got into writing comics. Plus having that position for that show may explain why he doesn't write more comics.

They should just do the whole movie as The Rock character being Black Adam... "Black Adam is going to lay the smackdown on your candy-ass!" One day, JT... One day...
