New Comic Day! January 25th edition

Hey there X-Maniacs, it's Wednesday, which means it's time for another New Comic Day! Before I get into what I picked up as well as the Pick and Runt of the week, a quick question... Most of the past week saw me do quicker type reviews than I usually do, which worked out quite nicely for me, since I had a few busy days/nights and couldn't really spend all that much time typing up big, long reviews. So here's the question... Does anybody really have any major gripes about me cutting back on the length of the reviews I do? I mean for some books I WANT to type out a huge, long-winded posts because I really enjoyed the comic, but some books either don't really inspire me enough to spend a good 15-20 minutes typing about them, or don't really need super long write-ups. Besides being easier for me to type, I kind of figure the Quick Look reviews are easier to read. But I'm open for suggestions, and if a mess of people ask me to go back to the other type of reviews, then I will. If not, I'll probably alternate between my regular reviews and the Quick Look reviews.

Now that I've taken care of that, let's take a gander into my bag from the comic shop and see what I brought home with me. Justice League Dark #5, Teen Titans #5, Voodoo #5, Avengers Solo #4, Captain America and Bucky #626, Daken: Dark Wolverine #20, Deadpool #49.1, Mighty Thor #10, Secret Avengers #21.1, X-Men Legacy #261... Hey, look at that, a very reasonable 10 books this week! Well, kind of... I also picked up Green Lantern: New Guardians #5, but I mainly picked it up because my sister is enjoying it... I absolutely hate it passionately, and as such, am not sure if I'm going to bother reading it. If I DO read it, I shall be scoring it using Brightest Day Rules, which will at least amuse me. As for this week's Pick of the Litter, I'm going to go with Secret Avengers #21.1, if only because I am extremely curious to see what Rick Remender does with this book. This week's Runt of the Litter is... Um, I want to say New Guardians #5, but since I may not even read that book, I can't really choose it. Instead, I'll go with the thus far terrible Justice League Dark book. If Zatanna and Constantine weren't in this series? I'd have dropped it LOOOONG ago. With 10+ books this week, I should have 2 reviews up each night between now and next Tuesday. As for tonight, expect reviews for Secret Avengers and Deadpool #49.1. And that's it. Remember to check the scan blog as I'll have this week's Random Scan posted there pretty soon. Until later, X out.

  1. I think you should only do lengthy reviews on the comics you are most interested in or hyped about and do quickies for those that you feel aren't really poppin' off, yet still desire to consider. This would save you time especially with having a life outside of comic blogging. Besides, it's your blog, so ultimately, you decide what you want to do and how you wish to type. We all should have no quarrels with that. Anyway, that's how I feel about it! By the way...left you some stuff about Nate Grey on the New Mutants #36 review. If you wish not to comment, it's cool....just wondered with you being so busy X75, that you may have overlooked it. But don't feel like I'm being pushy; alot of it was just reiteration of past commentary plus a few thoughts I wanted to get your opinion on. But please, don't feel pressured to respond. In truth, I just enjoy your blogs and wish to make it as easy as possible on you to continue blogging. So thanks and keep up the good work....RadT out.

  2. I have to admit that I really only skim the summary on the books I have read and spend the time reading what you think about them.

  3. I do the same that Jermox does and for the comics I dont read I just read them to have a minimum info of what is going on, but I don't need the long form to that

  5. I TOTALLY missed those comments RadT(yes, that's what I'll be calling you from now on!) when I was responding to everything yesterday! Which is weird, because if I'd have known I had comments on that series I'd have been there post-haste! I'll def check it out after going through the comments on today's books.

Cool, I have to admit, I tend to do the same thing when reading reviews myself, guys. I'll skim or even bypass the review portion and see what the reviewer thought about the comic for comparison sake. I'll probably do most of my reviews in a more brisk manner(like Deadpool #49.1) while spending more time on the comics I really enjoyed/was looking forward to(like Secret Avengers #21.1). Thanks for the responses.

  6. X-Maaaaaaan!!! How are you hun?! I miss you. So I'm here for the weekly awesomeness of Comic Book Day. ^_^

Let's see to answer your question about lengthy vs quicky reviews. I'm with RadT on this one. I think your most effort should be put into the comics you truly enjoyed. Makes it more fun for you, plus who wants to drag on about something you disliked?! *cough* Justice League Dark* lol. I think you'll find your reviewing to be a lot more enjoyable that way. So in depth reviews for comics you enjoyed.....quickies for the ones you seriously hated reading lol. And considering I'm always behind, I usually just look at the score anyways before I read the full review, so that would be awesome. Having a quick review would kind of give me the heads up of what to expect in an issue. :-)

As for the comics you will be reviewing this week, I'm looking forward to JLD, Teen Titans annnnd Voodoo.

    Happy reading mi amore!

  8. Hey X, looks like I'm in the minority here, but I really dig the detailed summaries. The summaries you do are really what distinguish your reviews from the reviews on all the big sites. Often I'd like some inkling about what goes on in a book before I buy it, and the big sites seldom give you more that what the solicit says. Very frustrating.

You, on the other hand, often read a book and review it before I get to the shop, so I can read your review before deciding to take the plunge. If you have to prioritize and only do summaries for a few books a week, then that's cool, but I hope you can post up at least a few detailed summaries a week.

  9. I'll definitely still do full reviews, TRobb. Even tonight when I was doing the rough drafts for tomorrow's books I noticed that there were times when I just kept typing more and more! I just can't shut up! :D The writer in me just wants to keep writing and writing and writing... If you want you could always request that I do a more in depth review for certain books. That way I can fly through some books(that I'm not all that enthused about) while taking my time on others.
