Justice League Dark #4

And now we head back to DC as I post a rare forth review in the same night. Due to the Year in Review post I did on Saturday, I'm kind of behind with this week's comic reading and reviewing. As such, expect this to be a REALLY slapped together post, as a) I rushed the hell out of it, and b) I have little interest in a series that wants to push Deadman as the starring character.

Justice League Dark #4:

What Happened: While Deadman is trying to keep June Moone safe from the Enchantress, John Constantine and the Shade are independently searching for Deadman. As for Zatanna, she heads to the barn the real Enchantress was hiding out in, but is attacked by a bunch of super-powerful, magic-proof fake Enchantress's and June's. Z teleports herself away from the area and ends up with Shade. As for Madame Xanadu, she... I'm not really sure what the deal is with her. Anyway, Constantine hunts Xanadu down and accuses her of... um, something. Obviously I'm lost here. Deadman decides to travel to Shade with June and enters one of Shade's teleportational doorways, but somehow June is pulled towards Enchantress, while Deadman is whisked elsewhere.

The Good: I liked the art. It was nice to see Constantine and Zatanna get a slightly larger role in this issue than the prior three issues. The team is SLOOOOOWLY coming together.

The Bad: Now, I don't know if it's because I pretty much rushed through this issue, but I had NO clue what was going on here! The sooner we're done with June Moone and the Enchantress, the better! Although the other characters are starting to get more page time, there was still WAY too much Deadman in this one. I'm not sure what Peter Milligan's infatuation with Deadman is, but I most certainly do not share it.

The Verdict: When you don't get/don't care about the story in a comic, that's a pretty good indicator of what kind of a score it's going to get. I was happy that we had more from the characters I actually care about here, but I'm still going to be VERY happy to see this storyline end, hopefully as soon as the next issue.

Score: 4 out of 10.What an English gentleman!

  1. Lol....I am starting to really enjoy this series. So I can't even look at your score and get nervous. But I wish you enjoyed it as much as I did. :(

I don't know what it is...but I am really digging the characters. I'm a little hesitant to read this issue though. I had it sitting on my night stand next to my bed and I woke up in a daze in the middle of the night and the cover seriously creeped me out..lmao. I'm almost embarrassed to say it took me a while to realize what it was and fall back asleep. lol.

  2. I wish I'd start enjoying this series! I like so many of the characters in it, but the story... I just don't get it!

HA! You should have turned the issues upside-down so you didn't have to see the cover! :D

  3. In fairness, I read this and am not sure what is going on either. I want to like this because I really like the concept and many of the characters but this story feels so convoluted with all the different POVs. I would rather them just come together if they are going to be a team.

  4. I hope that last line "one must die" is to Boston Brand, oh!! dammit he is already dead!!.

Why would Constantine think that a Dead-man has an apartment?

I'm slightly beginning to enjoy this series, but hopefully this story with enchantress ends in next issue, for good.

Do we agree in this one?

  7. "I want to like this because I really like the concept and many of the characters" That is the EXACT reason I haven't dropped this series yet, Jermox. I desperately WANT to enjoy it! I keep hoping with each passing issue the penny will finally drop for me and I'll love it, but it still hasn't happened.

HA! If only it was Boston Brand... As for Constantine, that's a great question! Why WOULD a dead man have an apartment?!?

If your answer is Midnighter, then yes, we do agree with the question in that picture! :D

  8. Finally!! I've read this issue lol. And damn it X I was confused as hell. I kept in mind you said it was confusing so I read slowly paic attention and it seriously gave me a headache. This issue was all over the place. The only exciting thing was seeing Zatanna and the appearance of the Real Enchantress.

Madame Xanadu is one confusing individual as well..I feel like I need to read some comics with her in it....lol..this was one of the four issues I did not like too much lol.

  9. HA! I am so glad this one confused you as well, Lisha! I was just plain baffled by it... I mean what the hell is happening here?! :P I keep hoping that each issue will FINALLY explain everything, but each passing issue simply gets me more confused!

  10. I think I'd rather learn advance trig than go through another confusing issue of this. Lol. And I hate math. Lol. Seeing as DC seems to be going to issue six for trades...I'm hoping within the next two issues everything is laid out and explained. If not, I'll have to drop it lol.

  11. I'm taking the exact same approach to this one, Lisha. I'm going to give it this storyline, and I'll start the next one, but if things aren't making some damn sense by like issue 9, I'll be cutting my losses and running away.

  12. I can't blame you one bit for your decision....Z isn't worth the headache and loss of money that could be going to other comics, lol.
