Wolverine and the X-Men #2

First comic up for the week? Wolverine and the X-Men #2. Granted, I usually try to go with my Pick of the Litter first(which was Cap and Bucky #524), but I figured this was the comic the most people would want to read/talk about, so that's where we're going. I have some family stuff to go through tonight, so tonight's posting schedule may be a bit more erratic than I like, but by the end of the night, besides this issue I'll have posted Cap and Bucky #524 as well as Daken: Dark Wolverine #17. I'm not sure when, but trust me, they WILL be up. But for now, here's Wolvie!

Wolverine and the X-Men #2:

Summary: The baby Hellfire Club continue their rampage against the X-Men by mutating the two NYS school board representatives into a Sauron and a Wendigo, before sending in a horde of Frankenstein monsters with flamethrowers. Before the horde of evil monsters can kill anybody, Iceman finally uses his awesome power to it's max(and yes, I am an Iceman mark) and manages to take down all of the foes on campus. With that plan out the window, the baby Hellfire Club unleash the threat that was under the school all along, Krakoa, The Island the Walks Like a Man(yep, really). The X-Men seem right screwed, but they do have an ace in the hole, a character who COULD possibly stop Krakoa... That character? Kid Omega. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to be the least bit interested in helping.

Thoughts: Um... This comic was okay I guess. I've already made my feelings towards the baby Hellfire Club abundantly clear, so I'm not going to get into that again, suffice to say, I hate the very idea of them. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Iceman go all Age of Apocalypse Iceman on the enemies of the school, it's about time somebody(Jason Aaron) realized how great Bobby can be. So the beginning of this comic was pretty good, we had total carnage, but the team managed to pull together and win one... Or so they thought. The ending, with Krakoa showing up? Yeah. I didn't like that at all... Besides the obvious, you know, Krakoa is an ISLAND, and yet was underground in Westchester, New York, I just don't see the allure in watching the X-Men fight an island that walks like a man. Call me crazy, but that's not my idea of a good read... Oh well. At least most of this comic was good...

Score: 7 out of 10.It's about time we get awesome ass-kicking Iceman!

  1. Men, Chris Bachalo is a difficult to follow artist... at least for me.

I like how he draw the characters, but the in some parts I was lost, trying to figure what the hell was going on.

Besides that I'm enjoying the funny elements that Jason Aaron is putting here.
and since the AOA Iceman appeared in X-force, I wondered how much time will take to see this Bobby doing the same. Thanks that wasn´t a long wait.

  2. "Chris Bachalo is a difficult to follow artist" You are not alone in that my friend... He's an artist who I really can't make my mind up about... Some issues I really enjoy his work, but others, not so much. His action scenes are REALLY hard to follow at times, especially the first two issues of this series.

Iceman is such a frustrating character because there are times when a writer will take him and do a GREAT job with him, showing that is is indeed one of the more powerful mutants around, and then another writer will ignore all of that and he'll go back to being the team joke. I'm hoping this is the start of Bobby becoming the powerhouse he COULD/SHOULD be.

  3. I'm with the Alien, the characters look interesting in this series and I like Jason Aaron BUT a)it features the lame hellfire kids and b)Bachalo's art is incomprehensible. I'll hold off until the second story arc, methinks.

  4. Can't say I blame you in the least, TRobb. The action scenes in this series have just been horrible... I don't know exactly what Bachalo is going for here, but it's not working... As for the baby Hellfire Club, I have a bad feeling that they aren't going anywhere any time soon... :/

  5. I love Bachalo, but loving him unfortunately means taking confusing action sequences in stride. His work on the Mayan deity arc in "Amazing Spider-Man" was f&%^ing amazing, but it also required that I read it two or three times to fully follow the action. (He has the Mayan deity punch Spidey from the panel above where the punch lands. A-maz-ing.)

Totally agree with everything about Iceman. I've been reading the various X-titles again for two years or so, and Bobby has probably had a grand total of ten lines of dialogue across three titles. I'm thrilled to see Aaron use him here. I also love that Logan totally nails him. He's totally the favorite uncle, and it's time he got called on it. I can't wait to see where this title goes with him.

I'm loathe to admit it, but the baby Hellfire Club grew on me a little this issue. I'm just as surprised as everyone, but something about the dichotomy between them being kids and being evil makes their evil all the more, well, evil. I just hope we don't see them TOO often.

  6. Bachalo is really one of those artists I have huge mixed feelings about... I mean there are times I really like his work, and then there are other times when he just falls flat for me. This issue was definitely one of the ones I didn't like... I just couldn't make heads nor tales of certain scenes! But then that's the thing with him. I'll read an issue like this and be down on his work, and then before you know it, I'll read another issue of his work and love it...

I'm still of the mindset that there should have only been ONE member of the baby Hellfire Club, that being Kade. He's the important one anyway, the rest of them just cheapen things. It's like I said before, I can buy one super evil, murderous rich kid, but I have trouble buying like 5 of them.
