Overall- Gah, and I thought Dark Avengers #2 was bad! First things first. I don't care one single iota about this Shadow Cabinet or whatever the hell they're called. I don't know who they are, and quite frankly, I don't want to know who they are. I get that Dwayne McDuffie likes them, but I don't.
Once again, this is going to be another quickie review, because I just don't have the patience to write a long post about a comic that I really didn't enjoy. Hawkman arrives in the Watchtower and is followed by the Shadow Thief who is exponentially more powerful than ever before. The JLA and the Shadow Cabinet(or whatever the hell they're called, I don't care)are attacked by their evil shadows. Ultimately, Dr. Light(the female one)arrives and dissipates all of the evil shadows. Shadow Thief manages to take the moon's shadow and send it hurdling towards the Earth. Superman manages to destroy the shadow moon, because he's Superman. The JLA then kick Shadow Thief's ass, and the Shadow Cabinet teleports away without giving the JLA any explanation for the past 4 issues... Gee, thanks Dwayne, I guess it would have been too much to fill us in on what the hell these last 4 issues were all about...
The Origins & Omens portion of this comic dealt with the continuing deterioration of Red Arrow and Hawkgirl's relationship. Hawkgirl continues to throw Hawkman in Roy's face until he reaches his breaking point and tells her to go f### herself. After he leaves, Hawkman arrives to comfort Hawkgirl. The future glimpse we see of the JLA reveals possibly the worst team I've EVER seen in either the Marvel or DC Universe. If the new, post Final Crisis JLA is made up of Black Canary, Dr. Light, John Stewart, Firestorm, Vixen and Icon, I can guarantee you, I'll stop collecting this series.
OK. I get it. Dwayne McDuffie REALLY likes these Shadow Cabinet guys, and he especially seems to like Icon. Good for you Dwayne. I like the Justice League of America. I want to read about the JLA, not some losers I've never heard of before. That's why I buy this comic series month in and month out. Unless things change drastically(maybe a change in writers is due)I'll be dropping this series very soon, something I thought I'd never even entertain doing during Brad Meltzer's brilliant early run on this series. For a score, I'm going to give this comic a 3 out of 10, which is actually worse than Dark Avengers #2! Please Dwayne, give us back the Justice League, not your pet characters...

Actually I think McDuffie created Icon back in the 90s for Milestone...
ReplyDeleteStill, I dropped this book right after his Injustice League arc, I found it to be very underwhelming.
I still don't understand why they felt such an over-powering need to reboot the book for Metzler to begin with. I mean really? These arcs have been better than Busiek's Syndicate Rules arc...?
Yep, right you are GL. Dwayne created practically all of the Milestone characters, which DC owns. But like I said, Dwayne might like the characters, but I don't know a thing about any of them. The whole lot of these Shadow Cabinet people seem very unoriginal and uninteresting. Which kind of sums up how I feel about Dwayne's entire run on JLA so far.
ReplyDeleteAs for reboots, the bottom line is, putting out a #1 issue of anything spikes sales, even if just for a month. Hell, Marvel reboots comics practically every other month! Just look at the Punisher, Runaways and even the Ultimates. Marvel restarts these comics every few issues hoping to get collectors to run out and buy them because they have #1 on the cover. I still don't get why Marvel has had 3 different Runaways series containing the same group of kids in every series. That drives me crazy.
Personally, the only JLA comic series I've read has been the current series, the one that started with Meltzer. I've got my eyes on a few older JLA comics on eBay, but so far they've been a bit too rich for my blood.
