Hey guys and gals, today we're gonna continue with Marvel's Universal cross-over featuring Spider-Man and... well, Spider-Man. After the last issue was a bit lackluster, here's hoping this issue kicks things up a bit, so let's see how it fared.
Spider-Men #2
Summary: We start off with Mysterio regaining consciousness and then sending a lifelike avatar through his portal to get rid of Spider-Man once and for all, because... closing the portal doesn't seem like a good enough idea I guess. Or maybe stealing while you know Spidey isn't in this Universe... but yeah... I'm no evil genius. Over in the Ultimate Universe, the two Spidey's question one another until Miles asks if Spidey is Peter Parker, obviously thinking of the Ultimate Version. Peter is confused so goes on the offensive, cause... yeah. Miles eventually catches Peter off guard with his Venom Sting maneuver and starts to unmask him but Peter recovers and the fight continues. The two go back and forth until Peter removes Miles mask, thankful that he isn't a younger clone of him. Miles gets defensive without his mask, since they're out in broad daylight and uses his Venom Sting again, this time knocking Spidey out cold. Peter wakes up in a holding cell met by Nick Fury, and after a long Bendis-ian explanation, Fury releases Peter Parker and formerly introduces him to Miles Morales.
Fury decides to look into the time rift and sends Miles and Peter out to explain what happened to the younger Peter Parker. While flying on a helicopter, Peter asks Miles if his Universe's Peter Parker is dead, but before he can answer the Helicopter is blasted by a rocket launcher. The Spider-Men escape, and are met by the avatar of Mysterio as the issue ends.
Thoughts: Okay, so first things first, this issue was not without it's faults. I mean, Mysterio seems like a kind of lame choice to fight two Spider-Men... and Peter just attacking seemed weird, especially considering how many times he's been attacked by heroes due to a misunderstanding, but we can chalk that up to him thinking this may be a Mysterio illusion. That said, the stuff with Miles and Peter was really enjoyable. The banter while fighting, Miles being still likable, Peter wondering if Miles was a clone was funny, plus the fact Peter said Miles had a cooler costume was a nice line. Overall, I enjoyed this comic enough to continue reading it, and that's a hell of a plus after that slow first issue.
Score: 8/10
Spider-Man (Peter): And what's with your costume being cooler than mine?
Miles beat Spidey!!!!!!!!! That sounds a bit tricky. Well you said Spidey was surprised and I guess he didn't expect it, but he's fought plenty of guys back in his day. He almost took down Thor when they fought! To lose to Miles seems a bit sad. Still, this does sound tons better than issue 1. Maybe the series has hope yet :D
ReplyDeleteYou'd better believe I was gonna call them on that lol, but they kinda made an excuse by saying Spidey was disoriented from his cross-universe voyage, which was reason enough for me, plus Miles knocked him out with the Venom Sting which he sent through a web... I didn't even know he could DO that.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I didn't know that he could do that either, but I don't really read any comics with him anyway (Aside from FCBD) :P I barely heard about the Venom sting in itself! Well I guess being disoriented helps enough....still mildly skeptical, but it's not like I can go change what happened or anything. Still a good issue, which review are you doing next?
DeleteYeah, it wasn't the best excuse but meh, I'll take it if IO have to, ya know? And tomorrow's review is gonna be ASM #688, Sunday will be either Batman The Dark Knight or Aquaman, and since you asked, I'll let you pick haha.
DeleteI'm honored :D Let's go with Aquaman! I know you said it's currently one of your favorite comics currently (Not sure if you just meant DC or all of comics) So I'd like to see what you think of this one. I was never a fan of Aquaman before the New 52 so maybe this would be a good way for me to start liking him. Well, I'll be looking forward to ASM tomorrow, :)
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me dude, expect that on Sunday then. And yeah, it's probably one of the three best books coming outta DC at the moment, in my opinion anyway, along with Batman and Green Lantern, hopefully I don't have to eat those words come Sunday!
ReplyDeleteI am kind of excited about this one. You guys may not know this but before Peter Parker died he was dealing with the Ultimate version of Mysterio. The background of this Mysterio was never really fleshed out but I remember him being kind of a bad-ass. This issue pretty much confirmed what I was guessing last issue. The Ultimate version of Mysterio is the same guy as the 616 Mysterio. It looks like he just sends that weird robot he controls to the Ultimate universe to pretty much wreak havoc on a younger and inexperienced Spider-Man.
ReplyDeleteLooking up on Wiki I remember that Mysterio killed the Kingpin and pretty much is the new Kingpin of New York. Kind of cool that they wrote him as the same guy.
Ultimate Mysterio is not 616 Mysterio, they act completely different, just look at the last few issues of ASM mysterio and spider-man have a completely different kind of interaction than what we saw here regardless of whether they were with or against each other at the time.
DeleteI don't think you can use ASM as a reference. Different writer, different comic, and could very possibly be a different interpretation of Mysterio. But, more importantly, I don't know how you could interpret 616 Mysterio sending an Ultimate Mysterio robot to the Ultimate universe after he has been giving hints about screwing with the Ultimate universe any other way than saying they are the same person.
DeleteIf that is the case, it makes Mysterio look dumber, because "A", he gains absolutely nothing from controlling NY in another Universe.... and "B", it doesn't explain how he's a force to be reckoned with in the Ultimate Universe yet he's been a joke for most of his time in the 616 Universe. Plus, wouldn't he figure out Spidey is Peter Parker, since it's common knowledge he was in the Ultimate World? It just raises WAY too many questions.
DeleteIt was a fun issue, some funny dialogue and just a pretty good Spidey comic overall. As I mentioned in my review, there was a slight error in the writing. The part where Miles says "For real it's really him?" Then in the next panel the dialogue cloud has him saying "Kinda sorta" directly after, which doesn't make sense.

Nice catch Destroyer, I've noticed that slips by more than you'd think, in the last Ends of Earth issue of ASM, Spidey and Iron Man's dialogue bubbles got switched around too.
