Brightest Day #10(of 1,986,875,126): Writers: GEOFF(1959 4 Life!)Johns & Peter Tomasi. Artists: Lots of people.
Quick Thoughts: Here we discover that the Firestorms have to work together and not argue with one another or else the universe will end!!!!!! It's like the Odd Couple, but with powers! Oh yeah, plus Blackest Night Firestorm is also still a part of the Firestorms for some reason. From there Black Manta hunts down Aqualad and reveals that he is the boy's true father(WOW, who didn't see THAT one coming???). Before Manta can kill Aqualad's adopted dad, Aquaman steps in to face Manta.
*Yawn* Boring. Don't care about any of this stuff anymore. If you want to read some cheer leading, “rah-rah-rah, Brightest Day is Grrreat!!” stuff, look elsewhere. In my honest opinion, this mini is the perfect cure for insomnia, although I suspect it may also cause madness, so it's a mixed bag.
Score: 5 out of 10.So Aqualad is Manta's son... Yeah, NOBODY could see that coming...
Lol I LOVED this issue. I'm shocked you didn't, of course we knew Manta is Aqualad's dad but the fact Mera may be the mom didn't make you like it? Or the mystery of why Black Lantern Firestorm survived? Or the pure awesome back story Jackson got? Hell I like him more after that one issue than I like some people after years worth of comics.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I knew we were gonna be on different sides of the fence on this one, JT! The Aqualad/Mantis reveal was just so weak to me. I mean it was such a paint by numbers thing to do. Why not leave some mystery as to his parentage? Black Manta seems like such a weak choice to be his old man.
ReplyDeleteAs for Black Lantern Firestorm, THAT annoyed the hell out of me actually! Why the hell should he have survived? All the other Black Lanterns are dead, and with Nekron defeated and Black Hand in chains, there is NO reason Black Lantern Firestorm should still be around. I mean he was funny during BN, but his survival just didn't make sense.
As for Aqualad's backstory, what was so good about it exactly? Like I said before, it just seemed really paint by numbers to me. You know, "New character appears. Shows mysterious powers. Learns that he was adopted/taken in by kindly family. Finds out Hero/Villain is his father/mother. Has to deal with this knowledge." Dude, it's been done to hell over in the X-books! Hell, Ultimate X is telling a similar story that's, imo anyway, even better since the title character is Wolverine's kid as opposed to renown loser, Black Manta. I'm def glad you're enjoying it JT, but me? I just want it to end! :P
Well then you're in luck, because there are only 1,986,875,116 issues to go!!
ReplyDelete...okay, thinking about that, maybe you're not in luck.
Lol He's black and has Water powers.... WHO ELSE is gonna be his father?! What I really liked is they hint at it all the way back in Blackest Night, there's a scene with Mera and you see all this stuff and you see her with Black Manta, of course I figured it was some past stuff I hadn't read.
ReplyDeleteHaha, who says their all dead? Aquaman was still bringing back Dead fish and Martian Manhunter turned all Black Lantern in Green Arrow 3 for a second, but I see your point. Maybe they'll explain it next issue.
I liked the idea of them having a kid and knowing they'd have to give it away and taking it away from the water to a hot place where they knew a "Mermaid" or whatever Mera is couldn't go because it's such a human thing to do. I guess thats what resonated with me, the feelings they got acquired for the kid more than the actual Superman-ish back story. I get why you don't like it though, guess we're just on two different trains of thought for this one X...ya jerk :P Lol
"He's black and has Water powers...." HA!!! But see, that's what bothered me about the reveal the most. And that's on DC. Since the kid was in the Aquaman portion of the DCU you just KNEW he was gonna be associated with Black Manta. If it was a black GL kid, he'd be associated with John Stewart. Same thing with a Superman character and Steel. I still say that they should have left out the Manta connection and had some mystery there as opposed to the whole, "My father is evil, therefore I have to make up for his mistakes" story that we both KNOW Aqualad will be going through. IMO having Black Manta as a father adds nothing to the character, instead it takes away from the character, but maybe that's just me.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I agree. But let's be honest, at least it could lead to a fight between the two worth investing in, He could have a more lame Dad like Steph and Cluemaster....
ReplyDeleteNo, that's a pretty good point. I mean Aqualad's father could have been some c-list Aquaman villain who showed up one time in the 60's before vanishing, never to be seen again... *coughNekroncough*
ReplyDeleteA part of me CAN understand why Manta is the kid's father; to make Manta Aquaman's top villain and so Aqualad can do the whole, "making up for his evil father" thing. But to me Manta pretty much IS Aquaman's top villain(he DID kill his infant son!), and once we get the inevitable Manta/Aqualad fight, there's no where left to go. If Aqualad's parentage was a mystery, Aqualad could help Aquaman best Manta and then you could have the ongoing mystery of who Aqualad's true parents were. But now once Manta is out of the picture, then what?
Well I think the fact that Mera is pretty much probably his mom should be interesting, Aquaman's got a black step kid... that's his enemies son. No different really from is they announced that Damian was really Jason's son or how when Connor was part Luthor. Sure it's been done alot but it makes the kid more important by proxy.
ReplyDelete"No different really from is they announced that Damian was really Jason's son" ???
ReplyDeleteI'm still not sold on the fact that Mera is his mother... I tend to think that that Siren chick is gonna wind up being his mother myself. And as for SB being part Luthor, don't get me started on THAT revelation! I could go on an epic rant about that if need be! Oh, btw, Hell's Kitchen is actually on Wednesdays this season, not Tuesdays. I think the first episode is this Wednesday too! Yay!!!
Haha that was supposed to be IF they announced, not is.
ReplyDeleteI think the Siren thing is too obvious, plus when Mera had her Rage out or whatever during Blackest Night they showed her and Manta, so I'm thinking that's why. Because they haven't really pointed at it being Mera yet, she said the parents were unfit, never herself. So I'm just assuming, and probably right. We'll see though.
Haha what was wrong with that? I like the idea of it, but Luthor flipping a "Turn evil switch" was stupid....
Thanks for clearing that up JT! I couldn't figure out WHAT you were talking about! :D
ReplyDelete"So I'm just assuming, and probably right." HA! I love the way you added in that you were probably right! Wow, when did you become so egotistical, JT? :P
Ugh... It disregarded YEARS of SB back story, plus it just didn't make any sense... If Lex had this trump card to play, why did he wait so damn long to play it? Or even better, why not wait until SB's powers were fully developed and then send him after Superman? And yeah, the turn evil switch was painfully bad. I don't get why SB needed a connection to Lex either. Hell, just being called SUPERboy should be enough to have Lex interfering in SB's life. Why Lex was all of a sudden revealed as SB's "other" father I have no idea...
Lol how WOULD you have felt if that happened, haha.
ReplyDeleteLol around the same time I started hanging out with you, X :P
I don't even know the backstory behind him, is he a failed clone or has he always been that way or what? I know he has no ties to Krypton right?
I'd be absolutely fine with that. Hell, at least that would(in theory anyway)give Jason SOME connection to the current Bat-stories. Anythings better then that lame, red-haired version of Jason we just had to suffer through...
ReplyDeleteHuh, so my egotistical ways must be catching. :P
Originally he was simply cloned from Supes after Supes "died" to Doomsday. Those annoying Newsboy's broke him out of the lab prematurely(he was meant to come out fully grown to replace the dead Supes), and he went off on his way. Later on they added that he was cloned from Supes and the head of Project Cadmus for some reason, and I guess Lord GEOFF didn't like that, thus the change in origin. Me? I don't know why he couldn't be a full blown clone of Supes. He doesn't resemble Lex AT ALL. Hell, the first time he met Lois, she immediately saw the resemblance to Clark. It's not like she was thinking, "Hmm, he looks strangely like the love child of my dead husband and his arch-enemy..."
Hell I gotta agree with you there, man, red haired pimply soliloquy giving Jason pissed me off... with his phallic helmet.
ReplyDeleteLMAO @ The Love-child joke, that was awesome. That is a pretty good point though, it's not like he went bald or something.
Oh, speaking of Supes, are you gonna read the JT Krul Teen Titans issues?
HA! "phallic helmet"... Why does Crazy Grant hate us so???
ReplyDeleteExactly! SB has NEVER resembled Lex in the least. The dark hair, the blue eyes, the tall strong build, where exactly does Lex's looks come in??
Of course I am! I'm collecting(and kind of/sort of)reading the current HORRIBLE Teen Titans series, so I'll read Krul's take on the team... I mean, the series can't get any worse than it is now, right?!?
Lmao because he's a Phallic Helmet himself... that's my nice way of calling Grant a dick. Lmao
ReplyDeleteUm.... maybe he has Lex's legs? No idea... but that is a damn good point X.
I don't know... they had some stupid thing where JT was talking to the Titans... or something on the DC blog site, he seems to know a lot, like mentioning the movie Beast Boy's character was in, but it seemed very stupid too,
HA!! Thank you for clarifying that for everybody, JT! :D
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you JT! See, every once in a blue moon even I come up with a good point! Usually by accident, but hey, a good point is a good point!
Ugh, some of those older Teen Titans/New Teen Titans were so awful they're best to just be forgotten, not rehashed... Like Beast Boy. Instead of killing off defenseless little girls, why can't DC do the entire comic world a favor and kill off Beast Boy???
Lol my pleasure X. I'm gonna start calling people Red Hood Helmets... only we'll get that joke.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I'm really hoping Superboy gets some type of time to shine in the Titans since their cutting down the team.
I couldn't agree more! I'd take Lian over Beast Boy any day. Hell he and Raven are both not worth writing about, just throw em in the Doom Patrol so I never have to see them again.
HA! I love that! There are quite a few people we could call Red Hood helmets! :D
ReplyDeleteI can't remember what I read(which is sad since it was only a few hours ago...), but in the back was a preview for the new Teen Titans line-up/creative team, and I was all smiles until I saw FUDGING Beast Boy and Raven... What the HELL!!!!!!!! The team is called the TEEN Titans, not the Washed Up, Has-Been Titans! They are two of the most stale characters in all of the DCU, and to be honest, I don't think there's anything that could be done to freshen either of them up. Raven has turned back and forth between heel and face so many times that it simply has no impact anymore. You know, it's like, "Oh, Raven's betrayed the team again... Yawn..." Hell, I think she probably rivals Kane for the most face/heel turns in the history of the universe! And Beast Boy is in the Jamie Beetle range of annoyance to me. Just seeing him automatically begins to piss me off. Beast Boy could be quietly standing in the background of a panel, saying and doing nothing, and I'll get pissed! That's how much I dislike him. He's like every obnoxious, trying desperately to be funny kid from High School I've ever met. And to make it even sadder is the fact that I don't even think he's a teen anymore! ARRGH! Look at that, I totally didn't mean to and suddenly a rant broke out...
Haha, You can also use it. I know we'll get a lot of use outta "red hood helmet."
ReplyDeleteYou should write a post about those two at LOL one day. Man, I was SO pissed when I saw those two on the DC site as apart of the new team. I get why Static is gone since he's getting a comic next year. But what the hell?! Why not replace those two bastards with Aquagirl and Bombshell?! They were fine! Or Aquagirl and Miss Martian, or Zatara, Or Black Alice or anyone who isn't THOSE TWO! And that Kane line was do damn true.
I totally forgot to use the red hood helmet line during the AIM chat! I gotta remember to use that on somebody(YOU!! :P ) Next week.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I mean they're just NOT teens any more to my knowledge. Ugh, put them in their own comic where I won't have to buy it or something! I am SO disappointed to see that they'll be ruining that series. And I had no clue about Static leaving! That really sucks! He was actually some fresh blood who fit on a team called the "TEEN Titans"!
Haha, and then you DID use the line. That's what happen when ya put your mind to it buddy! :P
ReplyDeleteRight? The thing that annoys me is Static was only around for like ten issues, and he, Bombshell and Aquagirl had barely scratched the surface of being used. I mean first was Blackest Night, then the issues where they went to Static's home, then the Search for Raven and now. Like really? At least keep one of them since they all have history with Ravager to my knowledge.
HA! And I just used it again in a different post! :P
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more. I'd say definitely keep Aquagirl or Static around. Ravager kind of fills the "crazy, mean girl" role so I don't mind Bombshell taking off, but I still don't get the Static thing, new series or not. Hell, Superboy is getting a new series really soon and he's still going to be in Teen Titans, why can't Static pull double duty?
I saw, you're such a red hood helmet! OH YEAH!
ReplyDeleteExactly, he could easily be in two comics. Only reason I say keep Bombshell is because her and Ravager have beef and I'd like to see them forced to team up. I don't see why Awuagirl left though if they teased a thing with her, Superboy and Wonder Girl.
HA! You finally got me back you red hood helmet! :D
ReplyDeleteReally good point about Aquagirl. Maybe she WILL wind up sticking around, but since she's not a big name DC neglected to mention it? Or maybe Krul has other ideas when it comes to the SB/WG relationship and she didn't want Aquagirl involved. Who knows why they kept who they did and ditched who they did. If there's one thing I've noticed lately it's that DC seems to have NO idea what the hell they're doing!
Haha, I can see that phrase being around for quite a while now.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Hell I think it would've made more sense to make Superboy, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, Batgirl, Red Robin and some of the older members into one team and let Static, Ravager, Aquagirl, Miss Martian and some other people like Cass Cain on another team and put Beast Boy and Raven on the "Limbo" team.
Ooooo, JT, I LOVE adding Steph and Tim to the team! Hell, I'd leave it just as those 5 characters and the heck with everybody else! You've got Tim as the leader, Bart as the comic relief, WG and SB as the bruisers, as well as having tons of tension between Steph and Tim, SB and WG(as well as SB and Tim???) I'd buy that comic in a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even think of the tension between Tim and SB, I'd probably add Ravager too since she and Bart seem to have a thing, plus she has history with those five and beef with Wonder Girl. Man that team would be so great.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, Rose would def fit in as well. She'd be perfect to stir the pot so to speak. I could easily see her either getting involved with Bart, or better yet, getting in the middle of any relationship Steph and Tim could be having. DAMN IT DC, make this happen!!!
ReplyDeleteSee?! Why can't we do that? Hell imagine how good that comic would be, especially if Gail, Miller, Fabian, Judd, Tomasi, or Tony Bedard wrote it? I'd pay for that, hell that cast is perfect.
ReplyDeleteYeah man, to be honest it probably wouldn't even take a top notch writer to do that comic because the team would be SO strong. I just don't understand how we can think of this, which is OBVIOUSLY a brilliant idea, and yet the powers that be at DC can't...
ReplyDeleteBecause DC while still good seems to be full of idiots. Hell matter of fact WE should write that comic. Man that'd be epic, and fun as hell. Even if we just split it and wrote dialogue for three characters a piece.
ReplyDeleteYou know, lately I kind of wonder if I even feel that DC is even, "still good" at all... I've been noticing a bad trend lately where the Marvel books I've been reviewing have been around the 7-7 1/2 range while the DC comics have been consistantly below 7... I really hope DC gets it together after Brightest Day.
ReplyDeleteI'd hope so too. I don't read a lot of DC but the Spidey, Deadpool, Wolvie, and Daken I'd been reading were all really good. But like you said, DC does seem to be putting out subpar books, I'm hoping after Brightest Day and the whole Return of Bruce Wayne that everything gets good again.
ReplyDeleteWe can only hope that things start picking up after Brightest Day ends. I don't really have much hope for the Bat-books even with Bruce coming back because Crazy Grant is still gonna be there! Once Crazy Grant moves on to the Doom Patrol or something, THEN I'll get my hopes up about the Bat books! :P
ReplyDeleteHaha, well I'm hoping the Road Home books are at least good. Fabian is doing the Red Robin one and the Batman and Robin, and Miller is doing Batgirl. I'm pissed The Outsiders and Ra's Al Ghul have issues and Cass Cain nor Jason have them though.
ReplyDeleteMorrison is really.... annoying me in terms of his writing. I may just completely ignore his next stuff with Batman Inc.
I'm actually cool with Ra's getting an issue, because he's always fun with Bats, plus his family is SO wrapped up in Bruce's life. If nothing else Ra's actions when he discovers Bruce is still alive should be funny. He's probably so happy his beloved Detective is still alive out there!
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, the Outsiders one kind of puzzles me. I just don't get that. I guess that's just a way to draw some attention towards the Outsiders series. You know, tie it into the Bruce Wayne story and hope the people who buy that one-shot would be willing to give Outsiders a shot.
Dude, I def wouldn't blame you at all. Morrison REALLY needs to start wrapping some of these damn storylines up(THE BLACK GLOVE one!!!)and moving on to some good old normal Batman stories rolling. What the hell is so bad about telling a Batman story where Bruce takes on Two-Face or something? Hell, in a way I'm almost intrigued to see how Damian would act around some of Bruce's older foes. Maybe he'd kill Mad Hatter, catupulting himself from on of my most hated characters into one of my favs! Sorry Landry... :P
Oh don't get me wrong. I don't mind Ra's has one, and I hope Talia is included. But it just annoyed me that Jason and Cass don't have them.
ReplyDeleteLMAO! You saying that just made my day haha, and yeah Damian would probably jump from one of my most hated to most loved. I'm wondering how Damian would act around Scarecrow or Killer Croc or someone else.
Well, I'm not sure what you've read/haven't read yet, but Cass does at least get a mention in one of the comics I read tonight, so at least it looks like there's some kind of a plan for her.
ReplyDeleteDude, if Damian killed Hatter I'd... I don't know what I'd do. Maybe create a Damian worship blog or something. And EXACTLY! I'd love to see Damian go up against some of Bruce's rogue's gallery! Not fudging Pyg or that weird Flamingo guy or the rest of the crap Grant has been feeding us.
Ah that's good at least. I'm assuming it was in the Batgirl comic. So far I've read the Red Robin one, Shadowland, Superman #703, Green Lantern #58 and half of Emerald Warrior.
ReplyDeleteHaha would it die as quickly as the Saint Barry blog? And right? WTF is up with these characters? Flamingo, The Black Glove, Pyg, Who are his next villains? Lite-Bulb? Dor knobb?
