Green Lantern Corps #48: Writer: Tony Bedard. Pencils: Ardian Syaf.
Last Issue: 7 1/2 out of 10.
Review: And thus begins the Tony Bedard era of GLC. We start this series with Ganthet and Guy Gardner holding a clandestine meeting with the leader of the Red Lantern Corps, Atrocitus. Ganthet tells Atrocitus that he has a proposition for him, and Atrocitus gives Ganthet 5 minutes to plead his case. After hearing Ganthet out, Guy agrees to whatever it was Ganthet said(we weren't privy to the conversation), and Atrocitus also seems interested. From there, Ganthet appears before the remaining six Guardians of the Universe and resigns his status as a Guardian of both the Green Lantern Corps AND the Blue Lantern Corps. Ganthet then requests to be made into a common Green Lantern, who would look after sector 0(which is where Oa is located)and after some thought, the Guardians agree to grant Ganthet his wish. On Oa, a rookie Green Lantern is abducted by the Alpha Lanterns(or requisitioned if you will), while Ganthet meets up with Kyle Rayner and John Stewart to talk about rebuilding the thoroughly demolished Oa. While the three were discussing rebuilding, John is summoned to meet up with the Guardians. He heads in and finds Alpha Lantern Boodikka standing with the Guardians. The Guardians reveal to John that the planet Grenda had ceased all communications with the outside world, and when a Green Lantern was sent to investigate, they reported that there was nobody left on the planet, before promptly vanishing as well. John agrees to go with Boodikka to see what they could find, and this issue ends with the rookie Lantern from earlier “requisitioning” his GL partner into the Alpha Lanterns.
What I Thought: I liked it. Tony seems to have a definitive idea of where he's going with this series, and I for one am glad to see Guy Gardner replaced for John Stewart. I've never been all that high on Guy, and his oftentimes childish attitude tended to grate on my nerves at times. Granted Guy had been written a lot better the past few years, but he was never one of my favorite Lanterns. It seems that this book will be revolving around Kyle(who is my favorite Lantern), John(who I always thought was egregiously underutilized)and Ganthet(who definitely brings something different to the dynamic of this book). I don't have any complaints about those three characters carrying this comic at all. The stuff with the Alpha Lanterns forcing Green Lanterns into their ranks should lead to some great stories down the road, and I for one hope Tony slow burns this storyline, and has the Alphas gather a veritable army before their scheme is revealed, that way we can have a very strong(Manhunter-esque)Alpha Lantern contingent ready to take on the GL's. Regardless of what Tony does, I have some high hopes for this series going forward.
Score: 8 1/2 out of 10.I bet Atrocitus is probably a blast at parties...
Another great review, I read them first then commented btw :P It's like a Thursday Best of The Rest! I love the inclusion of John Stewart in this, as well as seeing a power ring made, that was pretty damn awesome. I'm also interested in what Atrocitus is up to with Guy for Ganthet, as well as where Larfleeze is. You may hate him but I love that Orange Gonzo rip off!
ReplyDeleteYeah man, I was feeling the reviews today! Hell, I even finished my rough draft of Flashback Friday already! I guess Ganthet sent Atrocitus to New York, from what we saw in GL #54, right? Maybe Guy will be working with Atrocitus and Lobo come GL #55... Who knows.
ReplyDeleteAs for Larfleeze, if I never see him again, it would be too soon! :P
That's be cool, hell if Atrocitus and Lobo ever team up may God have mercy on us all! Speaking of Larfleeze, how do you feel about Lex being the center of Action Comics now?
ReplyDeleteIn two words? LOVE IT! Lex is prob one of the most complete villains in the DCU, so I'm over-joyed that he'll be getting to shine in Action. If nothing else, it'll def be interesting!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely agree there. Rumor has it it'll be Lex with Lois which seems odd but I can't wait to read that. Should be amazing, definitely one of the high points of this month.
ReplyDeleteHell, I'd enjoy Lex and Lois together, especially since it's been established that Lex has always wanted Lois, and she's like the one thing he can never have(hell, the dude brought the presidency, so not getting Lois must really burn!). Plus Lex and Lois's father were thick as thieves for a bit, so there's also that connection. I def can't wait.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that. I recall Lex kinda wanting liking Lana Lang or something in the past but I didn't know he wanted Lois. He must REALLY hate Clark then... Yeah after the stuff with the Kryptonians and Gen. Lane I'm wondering how Lois and Lex will interact too.
ReplyDeleteReally!? I'm pretty sure Lex even had a statue of Lois erected in one of his houses! Maybe I'm wrong though... No, I don't think I am. I can sort of remember Lex having some goons rough Clark up when he was powerless over Lois... I should really see if I can prove any of this though.
ReplyDeleteHaha...erected.... Clark's always powerless... and I doubt hiring dudes to beat up her man would make her like him more. Wow, now I'm really interested in seeing them interact.
ReplyDelete"Haha...erected...." *shakes head embarrassed for JT* :P
ReplyDeleteI think it was in an issue of Geoff Johns Action run where this happened, but hell, I could be(and probably am)wrong... If I hadn't finished off orering my DC books I'd look for those issues tomorrow, but after putting them all away, I don't really want to dig through 'em again!
Lol :P
ReplyDeleteIt's no problem dude haha, I'll wait til Lex Luthor week at the Scan blog and ask ya to look it on up!
Mmmmmmm!!!!!! A Lex Luthor week!?! How the hell have I not done THAT week yet!?!
ReplyDeleteThe world may never know... I don't see how ya skipped Lex, Supes, Batman, Spidey, Joker, and a lot of people haha.
ReplyDeleteI tend to shy away from the really big name heroes(Spidey, Bats, Supes, etc)because there's SO many scans of those characters out there already. But guys like Joker and Lex should DEF be given the spotlight treatment!
ReplyDeleteAh that makes sense, well I wanna nominate Joker and Lex of course, um.. Stephanie Brown, Barbara Gordon (Batgirl and Oracle) Ravager, uh.... I'd love Black Cat if you had enough comics with her.
ReplyDeleteWell, Joker and Lex are almost definites. Steph will prob have to wait until I read deeper into the Robin series since she's always popping up there, that way I could do a whole Steph as Spoiler week. I like Babs and Ravager as well, although Babs week might be tough, although I'm sure I could find a few interesting comics with her in 'em. As for Black Cat, I could, although she's never really been a fav of mine. Any reason for the BC love JT?
ReplyDeleteActually bro, I remember loving her from the Spider-Man Animated series, and the way she always conflicted Peter because he's loved MJ forever but she has such a mystery around her that she still makes him wanna stray over to the "Dark Side", so she's always been a cool character to me because she's the temptress, the forbidden fruit if you will.
ReplyDeleteIf I ever got to write some comics I'd LOVE to write a Black Cat story, along with Booster Gold, Jason Todd, Black Canary, Dick Grayson, Arsenal, and some other B characters I've always had ideas for.
Ah, well cool then, now I know! :-)
ReplyDeleteSee, that's why I enjoy b/c-list characters so much... You can do SO much more with a Black Canary then with a Batman. You mess with Batman too much, and you get the fans flipping out. If you do something extreme with BC though, it's okay, 'cause her fanbase isn't as HUGE as Bats.
Yeah sorry for the tiny rant there haha.
ReplyDeleteExactly dude. Ex-freaking-zactly! I mean if they'd done what they did to Roy to like... Grayson there would've been a HUGE uproar. Not that Roy didn't but you know what I mean. You know who I'd love to take over for? Connor Hawke/Queen. That character has SO much potential and does nothing, I'd LOVE to write something for him.
