Just one review tonight, and it's a bit of a rush job. I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things after getting a week off for spring break, so I'm dreadfully tired, and between schoolwork, homework and Dragon Age: Origins, I'm just not in the mood to do a whole lot of comic reviewing. Tomorrow I'll do a Comic Gazing post, and hopefully, after two nights of sleep, I'll be raring to go with a bunch of reviews come Thursday night... Or not. I guess time will tell.
Justice Society of America #37: Writer: Bill Willingham. Pencils: Jesus Merino.
Last Issue: 8 out of 10.
This issue starts the same way as the last issue, with Mr. Terrific at some undisclosed point in the future detailing to the ruling party of America, the Forth Reich, how he and his JSA allies were defeated by the Reich back in the past. From there, we get a flashback... After the death of Alan Scott, the JSA rallied and managed to defeat the multitude of Nazi wannabes that were invading their home. With the majority of the Nazi's defeated, the remaining non-injured/dead members of the JSA got together to discuss what they should do, which is when Shadow of War teleports in front of them. The team is unable to attack Shadow of War, since she is intangible, and she uses her teleportational abilities to bring a huge device called the Darkness Engine to the team(which so happens was being powered by the captive Obsidian). Upon activation, the Darkness Engine steals away the powers of all of the JSA members, which causes them to surrender, although they figured that surrendering would buy them some time to concoct some sort of plan, which judging from Mr. Terrific's position in the future, never happened. From there we head back to the future, where Mr. Terrific finishes up his story to the Nazi psychiatrist, and she leaves him alone in his cell. This issue ends with Mr. Terrific sneaking out of his cell and meeting with several other older captured heroes(including Superman, Batman, Green Arrow and... Ugh, Jamie Reyes...). It seems Terrific has a plan to right the past, but in order to do so, the captured and powerless heroes are going to be forced to rise up against their Nazi overlords.
I'm a sucker for alternate dimensional storylines, so this comic is right up my alley. Since we know the stuff from the present isn't going to stick, I'm going to overlook it and instead focus on the old heroes from the future instead. I'm going to guess that Terrific's plan involves somehow traveling back in time and either freeing Obsidian from the Darkness Engine or preventing him from being captured in the first place, since it seems that Obsidian is the key to the Nazi's diabolical plans. I'd have been even happier with this issue had Jamie “The Fake Blue Beetle” Reyes not shown up here, but at least it looks like the Nazis will be killing him next issue, so at least there's that. Anyway, if you're like me and you enjoy futuristic/alternate reality storylines, then this comic is definitely worth checking out. If you don't, well then I'd still recommend it!
Score: 7 1/2 out of 10.I said it last issue, and I'll say it again, damn Nazis!
Nazi's may kill Jamie? Is it wrong to cheer for Nazi's?
ReplyDeleteHA! I was thinking the same thing!
ReplyDeleteLol Great minds think alike sir X.
ReplyDeleteSo excuse my not exactly keeping up with this title, but does this mean that Alan Scott's recent "death" took place in an alternate reality, and that he's still alive and well in the regular universe?
ReplyDeleteNope, Alan is still dead... For now. But it's pretty obvious that the old heroes from the future, led by Mr. Terrific, are going to return to the past and save Alan from his rather sorry death. For storyline purposes though, Alan is still curently dead.
ReplyDeleteSo Alan died RIGHT before Jade came back? That family has the WORST luck.
ReplyDeleteHa, that would really suck if I thought for a second that Alan was going to remain dead. Hell, Alan just showed up in the JLA book, so I REALLY doubt his death is sticking.
