Not gonna cry, not...Way to make a guy feel special. Not gonna cry, not gonna cry...

An annual needs to take place in the same reality as the current continuity. One of the first Green Lantern comics I ever bought was the 1996 Annual, an elseworlds tale that didn't even feature Kyle Rayner. Needless to say, it didn't really give me the greatest confidence in the GL character at the time.

I also like it when series' regular contributors work on the Annual. Even if you find out the story is a throwaway, or features a secondary character, it gives you a little more confidence in your purchase if you know of the creators beforehand.

One thing I think the 90's forever tarnished for me was the idea that an annual should be part of a crossover. Ugh, just seeing a few of the Fantastic Four annuals I've picked up recently make me shudder at the thought of their contents.Kellohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08968990603380238489noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8091466292216433701.post-39017284231424533562010-07-02T01:28:25.198-04:002010-07-02T01:28:25.198-04:00This review WAS dedicated to you Kello! :D Glad y...This review WAS dedicated to you Kello! :D Glad you enjoyed it!

This comic was a pretty good mixture of seriousness and humor. I mean, Mandarin tosses acid in the director's face and turns his wife into pretty much a mindless zombie by the end, but there were also a few moments that had me chuckling, especially the way Mandarin went about telling his origin story. Plus I loved the way Mandarin saw Iron Man.

Hmm, that's a good question... I guess for me it's all about the story. I don't want to read an annual full of reprinted stories, or with a bunch of filler(the old X-Men annuals from the 90's were always FULL of filler pages!), a good, new, well written story is all I really need. I'd probably say this annual was better then most, since it spotlighted a character who really needed some freshening up, and told a good story to boot. But that's my thoughts on the subject, now I'm curious as to what you'd call a good annual Kello.x-man75https://www.blogger.com/profile/10292719455945603075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8091466292216433701.post-14245459824813977452010-07-02T00:58:03.010-04:002010-07-02T00:58:03.010-04:00Great review, X-man. After the comments on yesterday's post, I feel like this was specially dedicated to me haha.

Wow, That is not at all what I expected that issue to be about. It also seems a little more humorous than a normal Mandarin appearance, but Fraction is a funny fellow.

So X, I'm wondering as I'm reading this review, what elements do you personally think make for a good annual? Is there anything it must have?Kellohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08968990603380238489noreply@blogger.com
